Roscoe Club

Found this post on a search - was researching Diamondwood and I'm finding that it's pretty popular and sounds good. I have a fretless in the works now (SKB 5 fretless with diamondwood board - no lines - only tabs and dots on top edge of board) and didn't know much about Diamondwood. My last fretless was a conversion and the board was pau ferro, so I had the clear poly finish applied. From what I'm reading, this diamondwood is durable and sounds great.

What say you all with fretless / diamondwood boards?

F yes! Diamondwood growls and mwahs for days!!! Love mine!

And don't be afraid of roundwounds. They sound amazing, and diamondwood is really resilient.

Yeah it's a classic J that is new. It was an artist build and I bought it on here after thr owner decided it wasn't for him. He never used the preamp.
Good to know on the preamp. I think it likely has to be a bad one. The sheilding thing I mentioned was that I was surprised that not even the backside of the pickguard was sheilded (even cheap Chinese aftermarket ones are) and on higher end jazz basses cavity sheilding may also be done. It's not the end of the world and the noise level of the bass I can assess once the preamp is sorted out.
The battery compartment on the back simply needs to be slightly bigger and deeper which also surprised me. No matter what I do I can't get the batteries all the way in and the cover back on. Just an ovrersight I'm sure. Anyway I wasn't trying to whine I just thought these were unusual issues for a builder of this quality. Thanks for the response. I'll see what Keith says.

I don’t believe that you’re whining at all.
It’s very uncharacteristic that your bass has those type issues. I have to believe that it’s due to it being an early version of the Classic (maybe a prototype) fabricated at a time when some of the features were still being worked out. Still, those issues should have been corrected prior to the bass leaving the factory. Maybe the endorser needed the bass for a tour and they rushed it out.
Regardless, I would think that Keith would be willing for you to send the bass back so they can correct the major issues/defects. If not, I’d be very disappointed.
Let us know how things progress.

I admire how Keith is willing to put different preamps in his own basses. But when it came down to my custom order, I wanted his Roscoe/Bartolini pickups and preamp. There's really nothing like it.

While the Bart Roscoe pickups are custom quad coil pickups made specifically for Keith, the Preamp is a stock Bartolini 3-band. Nothing custom about it.

The two I've owned have been shielded as well, but they have been customs :D

(the second picture was after the preamp was swapped from an Aguilar to a Bartolini, but still shielded)

I agree with Joe, there's probably some extenuating circumstances with that bass.

I don’t recall any of my basses being shielded. I don’t go NIN the control cavity much but...maybe I’m wrong. I know my basses are dead silent. I can have the volume up, my hands in the air and you don’t hear a thing.
Are yours jazz basses? I don't see any reason to sheild Roscoe's typical designs with soapbars (or other brands) at all. It's just a lot more typical on higher end jazz basses due to single coil hum and noise.

How is the cavity done? My two Lull/XYZ M5Vs are both shielded excellently, but they're routed in the back, and both have single coil pickups. I've not removed the pickguard, so I don't know if they're shielded.

My Century fretless has it. It’s fantastic, beautiful growl. My only minor complaint is that the fret lines are a bit hard to see as the fingerboard is not dark. I’m very fortunate to own this bass.

Nice. The pickguards have to be sheilded also if the cavities are otherwise you won't get continuity throughout the copper sheilding (creating a Faraday cage) and that can actually make the problem worse. I sheilded my Fender Marcus Miller Jazz myself (it was not fun!) and learned the hard way  oh and on the Roscoe all the cavities are front access except the battery compartment - routed and accessed on the back.

Only playing church services right now but have been blessed with the opportunity to play with 3 different Praise bands right now. On a side note I sent the new Myrtle bass back and Keith is goiing to swap out the Aguilar electronics and put the Roscoe Barts in it. The Aguilars was very aggresive and clear but I missed the smooth thick Roscoe tone. I wanted to have him put a Nordstrand Preamp in it but they are on backorder for a long time. Maybe will have to do it later. I wonder how the Aguilar Preamp already in it would pair with the Roscoe Barts?

We’ve done a couple private gigs at rich guys’ lake homes. Outdoor, we’ve requested fencing for spacing around the stage and kept to ourselves. We get to go through the food line first. So far so good. They pay great and the food is awesome and there’s often an open bar. We only have a couple this summer.

We have a wedding scheduled for September. Again, it’s outdoor (one of those camps converted to a wedding venues site) and we requested separation from the band and dance floor/people. I’m not a fan of weddings but a couple guys in the band think they’re great gigs. Idk, having to be set up WAY early and then killing time in the middle nowhere.... I guess you can work in the 3 special request songs for the bride. :rollno:

Gard loved the Aggie with Bart’s but I wasn’t ever crazy about the sound of them together. Bummer about the Nord being out of stock. I waited 3 months for mine. Give the Aggie a try with the Bart’s and if you don’t like it just live with it until you can get the Nord. It’s a simple install.
