heh - I'm a trained professional.
She is a monster player. I met her in the Steely Jam band where she plays alto. Turns out she actually prefers to play tenor and has been wanting to get back out playing jazz. Bonus for us. I'm logging video now, will go through the audio and find some quick cuts. I just let the H4n run on auto the whole night so no telling about levels, etc.

Here's my level of sophistication. The cats I'm fortunate to play with a lot quote Shorter over Rogers & Hammerstein, Gershwin over Ellington, Hancock over Bill Evans. Me? Carry On Wayard Son, Iron Man, KC & The Sunshine Band, Ohio Players, and the ever-popular leap-of-faith combo of Frankenstein and Godzilla over the same set of changes.
Very different. Yep. You play yours in-tune.

one word - autotune
Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I cut my teeth as a rock/funk/blues guitarist back in the 70's (with some bluegrass guitar and banjo mixed in) so my vernacular is what is now classic rock. On any jazz jam someone will inevitably call a tune I've never even heard. But as I tell them, "if you got a chart, i know the song"
Finally after 20+ years of doing jazz gigs I generally have at least heard the song - or if I haven't heard a recording I've played it in the past. Maybe.As for the same changes thing, I've lost count of the La Bamba/Twist and Shout medleys. And back in the day I was famous for 30 minute versions of VoodooChile (slight return) with my power trio, where I'd go into Who Do You Love, My Generation, Brick House, and who knows what else. Ahh, memories...

To accompany my Greensboro-born LG on synth bass, I picked up a Moog Little Phatty last week. (The Moog was made in Asheville.)
I don't know why I screwed around with virtual analog synths for so long, trying to recreate the sounds of 70s and 80s funk/r&b. The fatness of analog is incomparable! This thing pumping through a Markbass/Epifani UL410 rig is the definition of booty shaking!

another new venue, this time with a lean/mean version of the band. Did a 90 minute set, and got asked back to do a regularly monthly thing. 2 for 2 so far...but man this booking/marketing stuff is hard work. Cutting up recordings - the sax player killed even more, and the keyboard player brought the electro3 and was doing a bunch of organ work. First time for this drummer to. Gotta love doing things on the fly...
