S/D Bassists #86 - Dollar Tree Romance

The owners of SWAD actually were going to buy Maharaja (what is now Maharana) from the owners, but as soon as they found out they were Nepalese they told them that A Nepali man could never run a restaurant and wouldn't sell it to him, even though he had the money ready. They sold it to some other Indian owners instead and it became Maharana. Lots of the cooks/employees are the same apparently. There's apparently some deep seated discrimination between Indian and Nepali people to this day. Stems from the Indian Caste system apparently. Horrible!

Needless to say, that motivated them to "stick it to them" so he started his own restaurant and it's doing really really well. He was a head cook and manager for Maharaja West for years. Food is unbelievably great, best in Madison in my opinion. If you feel like it, tell them "Drew's friend "Jerry" sent you" They'll know those names for sure, and you might get some freebies out of it too. Drew (drummer in my band) helped with pretty much every aspect of getting the restaurant running. Owners are Madon and Lakshmi Shrestha and their kids/family.

Damn, that's ******. I guess we'll try SWAD next time we're craving curry. Thanks for the tips!

i hate it because i get endorsed for things that i dont even know what they are. i cant wait til i get some job offer that is like "we see youre a master of configuration security evaluation and testing procedures, we'd love to bring you on!". my response back will just say "wut".

What do you do? I was under the impression you were a full time musician

Any of you guys on LinkdIn? I love getting notifications that someone I've never met or dealt with in any sort of capacity has endorsed me for a skill.

"Thanks, random stranger! Have an endorsement in return! EVERYONE GETS AN ENDORSEMENT!"

I get them, or from school people, generally they know nothing about me so I've been endorsed out the nose in PowerPoint and other stupid simple stuff lol... I never endorse back though, as important in life endorsements are, their method turns it into a silly game.

When we were dating my wife said v day was stupid. I've held her to it.

I hate being compelled to do something. But the last few v days were paid for by my ex, and surprises so was pretty much unavoidable.

That said the surprise element helped, I'm a fan of spontaneity. Most dates or things I set up happen very quickly after being planned. I don't like planning out "romance" for the future.

"I want to drive in no direction til we see something we've never seen or been to, get your shoes... " I do that alone a lot in my car and on foot so it's not too abnormal for me. But to others it's quite different.

I f*cked up, ignored the V day thing until yesterday, of course every restaurant in all of Pittsburgh is booked pretty solid. I figured a dozen roses should smooth over any f*ckups on my part, but I'm struggling to find a florist who can hook that up on short notice.

Too stereotypical that's why it's hard to come by those things today. Does she have a real favorite flower/s where's your first date place or a restaurant she liked but you haven't been in a while? What are things she loves but never thinks about, find those.

OR if your chill enough to play it off. Get everything for tomorrow and said it seems more about us now.

Everyone else mentions work or school frequently. You only mention music and family life etc. so I assumed that was what you did.

ah good call. well as i learned long ago, hard to afford pretty much anything as a full time musician unless youre legit in the industry and playing with major groups or doing major label/studio work.

i traded the full time sleep on couches and live with mom for big boy job, house, wife, kids, amps lol.

Easy Valentine's Day for me since I am still all swollen from surgery and blowing chunks of blood clots. But I managed to get to a store long enough to get a card and a big old gift bag full of her favorite candies, so scored bonus points for still remembering V Day while I am looking and acting like a zombie LOL

I just celebrated VDay by signing divorce papers. Feels odd I'm completely emotionless about the whole subject. Oh well.

Kids and I will stay up late watching movies and eating junk food.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but probably before I started frequenting. Do y'all pick or fingerstyle or a mix? I'm curious as why no matter the answer. If a mix, how do you determine which method? I've been doing a lot of picking lately, though I've mostly always been a fingerstyle guy. I've been enjoying that extra bit of attack with a pick lately. Just curious.

Check that, I think ever since I got the VI I've started picking more. At first I did it before I got used to the tight spacing. Then it just started creeping in.

Mix, sometimes within a single song. Just depends on how much attack/definition I want out of a part. Sometimes if having stiffness or aches in my hands, I will play with a pick just to give my hand a rest. I don't have a problem modifying my pick technique to give a softer attack and sound more like fingerstyle. Sometimes in those cases I just end up playing with one finger, which I can usually do just fine even for fast parts. In some bands I only use pick just because it's the best way to get the tone I want, especially with an overdrive or distortion pedal where I want a lot of really sharp attack.

When we were dating my wife said v day was stupid. I've held her to it.

This is what my wife said when we started dating. This year she revised that opinion lol. I sent flowers to her office a couple days early, took a day off work yesterday and spent all day doing baby related stuff and today we're going out for pancakes for lunch (she's been craving them all week)...then I'm cooking her dinner tonight. Either that or I'm bringing home pie and ice cream, depending on what her final verdict is lol. So all bets are off once the bun is in the oven, I'm not holding her to anything.

I do the big stuff for her on our anniversary and her birthday. She doesn't REALLY care about V day, but she wants the little extra attention and PDA's. We have a pretty close, romantic, affectionate relationship as-is, so it's not that big a stretch. When we went on our 10 year anniversary trip, everyone kept asking us if we were newlyweds and when we said how longn we'd been married, we actually got a lot of sour faces. Like "why are you so happy?", weird. At the baby class we went to last night, I was the only husband there. It was us and like 10 ladies, maybe one of which brought a friend. I was kind of shocked by that actually. I've gone to every single appointment, one board for every baby related activity, I'm support staff. I'm there paying attention, asking questions. I was going to bring a pad and take notes, but my wife said that would be overkill. I'm just detailed oriented about everything I care about and my focus is very narrow. Then again, there's a lot of things about how people act towards each other in public in typical relationships and marriages that I find really odd and completely foreign to my sensibilities. Actually, I could say that about most things people do in general. I fully acknowledge being weird.

Good news, over lunch I snagged a reservation at a swanky place for tomorrow, and locked down a dozen roses to pick up after work.

Everyone in a good relationship knows theres a level of give and take... I play along with the holidays because she doesnt care what I do any other day of the year. She can hang with me and my buds and participate along with my shenanigans, but at heart she's a girly girl and eats it up when we get dressed up and go out somewhere nice.. doesnt hurt that she usually has some new Vic Secret swag for me when we get home ;) And I always enjoy an excuse to eat a $50 steak.

Some epic Craigslistery happening today... I just picked up the 70's Small Stone at an intersection downtown. Guy originally posted it for $120, at which time I offered him $90. He wanted to wait it out, so a few weeks later I see he's got it listed at $90.... I offer him $80 and convenient pickup and he bit.

Then my guitarist and I found a guy selling his dad's old Sun Sorado and Sunn 2x15 with busted speakers, $800 for the whole kit. I sent him a shot in the dark offer for $150 for the cab and he bit, I think its a fair deal and I can add speakers to match my current Sunn 2x15 and have a pretty epic 2 ohm rig. Didnt have any interest in the 50 watt Sorado head.. but should I?
