SBMM Stingray Short scale

I really like the nordstrand mm4.2 I put in mine and think it nails the vintage tone and also gives one of the best single coil sounds I’ve ever heard. I posted a wiring diagram of it a few pages back.

i ended up picking up the mm4.4, your posts were helpful!

did you end up swapping any pots? i know you mentioned doing 250k for volume and tone and I believe the stock tone pot is 100k on these.

I made a harness with 250k pots and liked the way it sounded very much and felt the sound a bit clearer than the 100k pots and used with a .1uf tone cap.

When I got my SBMM short scale, it came with rounds. They were ok but a bit too bright for what I was looking for. I changed them for D’addario tape wounds. I like them, except the G string. At times it just seemed evil bright. I found myself avoiding the bass because of the G string (except for certain songs like Sir Duke where it seemed to work). So, I finally decided to try a set of labella DTFs 760FL. We’ll, howdy! To me they sound great. Only took about a week to settle in. The G string is once again my friend, and the stingray gets chosen regularly now.

These SS Rays love Flats! I have Roto 77's on now which I like and had a set of Thomastik TI Flats, which were fantastic as well.

You gotta adjust that pup height. Almost everyone complains about that with this bass

Never tried the Roto's, but really like the tapewound daddario flats that someone here suggested. Great feel and punchy deep tone. I have those TI flats on my Hoffy and love 'em!
Rotosound 77s are great flats. I put them on my Mikro. They are pretty bright for flats and fairly stiff. They are really rock flats though. I would go TI or maybe LaBella if you want that more muted tone and flexible feel.

My EBMM Tim Commerford passive shorty has the older style bridge with the individual string mutes that is thru-body only, so I bought a set of the La Bella 760F-MUS flats designed for the U.S. Mustang for it.

Same strings I have on my SBMM. One additional mod I made was to replace the 100K tone pot with a 500K tone pot as I prefer a brighter tone with those flats. Wow! I've had it that way for about 6 months and played several gigs with it. For me, perfect tone with punch for days. YMMV

And by the way, the pots in those are minis. Standard sized pots will not fit in the cavity.

This is not the case for my white Sterling Stingray Shorty.
I have installed a normal volume potentiometer plus a normal Fender NoLoad Tone potentiometer.
The connections of these two potentiometers point towards the bridge.
Between the MM pickup switch and the tone potentiometer I added a three-way switch (on-on-on) for the next pickup in the neck position.

so you added another pup in the neck position? can we ask what? and see a photo?

The Model J is the only one I'm sure can compete with that neodymium beast of a MM pickup.
Single coil form factor is a must, as I said.
Has anyone installed a single coil in the neck position? Experiences? Suggestions for other pickups? What goes with this MM monster?
