Heads that I didn't like with my Shcroeders are: SVT 2, Aguilar 750, Fender ( anything), Ampeg svp, BBE bmax. Heads that sounded good are: SWR ( all ) Kustom, Eden ( all ), GK pre amp ( cant remember the model). Thats about all I have been able to try for now.

What did you not care for with the Bmax.

It took me sometime to really dial in a good sound with the bmax, but now that i've gotten it figured out I'm very happy.

What type of sound do you strive for?

What did you not care for with the Bmax.

I played around with the BBE for about an hour (in store)and although I found the tones very useful, they were not anything special to me. One thing to consider is that I play a Modulus Q5 and this bass sounds better with some heads and cabs than others. Actually this bass can be hard to dial in with some rigs. With the Hi - FI heads and pre's this bass sounds nice.

I plan on adding an Eden WT-550 to my Schro for small gigs/practice rigging. I've heard the combo is incredible. And if it's that good, well then I just may be adding a Navigator to my rack in the future!!

So far this is the best setup I have heard. Eden WT-550 with either the 1212 ore 1210 and my Q5.

Anybody here use the 1210 and/or 1212 with a Read preamp?
I do, and I think it's great. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by a mellow sound, but I'd stop well short of calling my tone mellow. You probably use more treble than I do, but I can pull down tons of high end without putting my Read through any trouble. Other than trying new tubes, I'm not sure what else to suggest. I assume you're making use of the Bright switch on the Purity?

I'm finding that mine's just too mellow and lacking the definition that I really want when I use the Read. No problems with my old redface SWR Bass 350, but the Read is just too tame for me. I'm pretty much maxing the treble on the Read (or at least about 75-85%) and the attenuator on the Schro is wide open. Thinking about going to the Selenium tweeter to try and add some sparkle.

Comments and recommendations appreciated.

Thanks!

I've been using my Readu Purity through a 1210 and/or a 21012 for over a year now. I'm not sure how you are defining mellow..... but that has never been used to describe the tones I get from the rig. I will say that the Benavente's and Skjolds I've been using through the rig are probably a tad brighter than some, but still.... I've NEVER lacked for low end, for top end, or more importantly for definition.

I normally run the Purity with the EQ bypassed, the deep and bright switches both engaged, and the emphasis knob anywhere from 10:00 to 3:00 depending on what's going on. I turn the tweeter off on the 21012, and I use the tweeter at halfway on the 1210. I do believe however; that my 1210 has the selenium tweeter.

I'm not sure how to help you, but that's what I do, and like I said... all I ever get is jaw dropping stares and compliments on my tone... the deepness, and definition, the high end that is not harsh and brittle, and the mids that growl like rabid dog.

This is interesting. So I just got a Purity and I've been getting to know it. I agree on the no eq with bass and bright on. Yes, I like the emphasis between 10-3 as well.

What I'm trying to figure out is the levels of these controls. (I'm only using the DI output on the back.)

1. DI output level on the back - I have it backed off completely
2. Gain is full on - this gives the most up-front and live sound
3. Master doesn't seem to do anything for the DI. Does it control the line out level?

This is my favorite so far. It's not clear to me how to set the DI output level versus the Gain level. They both amplify the DI output level of course.

Comments? Suggestions? Thanks.

What are Schroeder cabs made of? And what is the Schroeder moan? Is there some harmonic drone sound coming out of them that disappears at stage volume? Thanks in advance.

What in the hell is this schroeder moan your talking about?

I have no recollection of hearing of any such thing before

It's gotta be plywood and not the lightweight type!! There's only a little fiber type insulation inside, there's a lot of bracing especially in the 410...and I imagine the larger cabinets.

to Chadds, I may be deaf but I don't know what the Schroeder Drone. Moan or whatever is. As I've said, I've had 16 superb and 1 good experiences with Schroders 1210 and 410 (one at a time) out of 17 gigs. I would say that normally my numbers would be closer to 12 or 13 sounding good on stage and about 8 to 10 of those sounding good in the room too...loud enough, clear enough, punchy/low end penetration without rumbling...etc etc.

Considering that clearly a half to 3/4 the rooms I play in are crapola acoustically, usually boomy, extremely loud, etc., and the stages aren't any better, having a superb experience both on stage sound and in the room of close to 100% is phenominal. You guys only need to read my other posts to see the passionate opinion I have resulting from being so darn freakin' happy with these cabinets!!!

Have fun Chadds. They're built like tanks.

+1 with my 1210 experience

This has been discussed a few places on talkbass before.
I definitely wouldn't call it a moan, but anyway.

If I'm playing through the cab in a very quiet room, I think I can barely hear a very low level harmonic background tone that seems to be there behind the actual note played -- to me it is a very, very subtle thing and it took me awhile of listening for it to decide that it might really be there.

Bottom line, to me it is barely perceptable under really quiet circumstances and TOTALLY a non-issue when playing with a band.

I know several have used various Schroeder cabs for recording.
If it is not noticeable in the studio mix, then what's the problem?

I just got out of a 3 day studiotrip. The well respected producer/engineer took signals direct from the bass, and also with my purity/schroeder 1210 mic'd. We ended up using the mic'd cab for the recording. They both sounded great... but there was just something really great sounding about the Skjold/Purity/Schroder combo... There was NO hum, moan, groan, or anything like that.

O.K... I'm not sure I'm foloowing you. Are you using the DI out to connect to your amp? I am not sure, but I thought the DI out was pre-eq. The gain, master volume, even the enhance didn't effect the di out. The only way to set the di out level is with the knob on the back that is specifically for the DI.

Please correct me if I'm wrong... I do know the master volume on the front does not effect the DI level. and I think the gain and enhance do not effect it either... ??

Well, looks like I'll be joining the Schroeder club soon. The reviews and testimonials have me hooked, and Jorg's input has been great. These cabs sound perfect for what I'm looking for.

I've been torn between the 1212 and the 410. I play in groups ranging from avante garde jazz, funk, world-pulse, prog rock to tribal heavy metal, so I need a versatile setup. In one group I have to compete onstage with 2-5 pounding drummers and crazy effects and electronica. FYI - I'm currently using an Ampeg SVT4 head, and alternating between using a Ampeg svt-410hlfpro, an Aguilar 212, or (2) Carvin 2x10 cabs. All of which have good tones for certain situations, but not for others IMO. I'm planning on switching back to my Demeter pre-amp (HBP-1) with a QSCplx2402 for certain gigs, and using the SVT4 for rock gigs.

But from Jorg's suggestion, I'm thinking I'll start with the 1212, to get aquainted with the capabilities of the Schroeder cabs. I'd love to switch to a smaller setup for sure, so if that works then I'll be psyched. And I can always add another cab later :bassist:

So thanks for all the posts about these cabs, the info has been great. I'll be sure to add my report after I get it.

Biker:

Yes, you are correct that I'm using the DI to connecto to the amp. Actually, I'm going into a Kurzweil Rumour to add a taste of chorus, then into a DBX Quantum for compression, EQ and noise reduction.

You are correct that the master volume does not affect the DI level. However, the others do affect the DI. The EQ, emphasis, and gain all affect the DI output. I thought the deep and bright switches did but I'm not certain. I don't hear much difference.

I suppose I could wire this up differently where I plug the Rumour into the effects in and out and perhaps the master control would regulate that. Then plug the output of the Purity into the DBX. I like using the balanced signal whenever possible. Is there a better way?

I know this is a bit off topic. Just trying take advantage of you Purity savvy guys. Maybe I'll email this to Jack and see if he responds. Thanks.

Hey Bro'

Judging from my past conversations with Jack, he would probably say you "might try" running the Rumor and the DBX in the effects loop. It should be quieter and cleaner that way. Then run the Purity output to your amp. I would try this... and then maybe also try what you suggested... (rumor in the loop) preamp out into the dbx. I'd suggest trying all of that using the normal preamp outs, instead of the di out. Of course... if you don't think it helps... you can always go back to the old way... but I think it will help you.

And.. I would go ahead and email Jack as well. It's his baby.. he knows all the tricks!!

Jorg says that it's on the way and Fed-X will be paying me a visit in a couple of days here in the Rockies!!!

My plan is to use it for my quiet gigs and combine it with my 1210 for the medium to large rooms as well as outdoors.

My iAmp800 and Ken Smith already sound terrific with the 1210 alone!

If anypne here, on TB, is using these two cabs together, how are you confiuuring them onstage? My first instinct would be to place the Mini atop the 1210 to the left side so that the 12s would be aligned on the vertical plane.

Tell me what you think.

Thanks, Kirk

I use a Mini-12 and a 1212 almost everywhere. When I am at smaller gigs, I prefer the 1212 alone. I put my Mini on top of the 1212 and put my 6 space rack on top of that! Incredible, is the best word to describe it!
