all i can say is DAMN they are expensive..... most expenvie cabs i've come across atleast

I can think of quite a few cabs that are as expensive or more expensive than Jorg's.

And that's just from the big companies - that doesn't include the really expensive "boutique" models from some of the smaller cab builders.

Nor does it take into account that a small Schro sounds as "big" as most other companies' bigger cabs.

In fact, outside of maybe the Acme stuff, I can't think of too many people who give anywhere near as much value for money as Jorg does.

+1. These cabs are meant as a single cabinet solution too. Keep that in mind also, especially when checking out some others prices when you add up the cost of 2 210's or a 210 and a 15. I frankly haven't seen anyone on the megathread say that or even imply that Jorg's pricing was too "high",,,I understand that isn't what was said, but all speaker cabinets at this point, especially with the kinda specs Jorg's have, both in volume, efficiency, range, and weight , vs that price, and you'd be very hardpressed to find anything else out there with numbers to equal these cabs. We've found that it's more of a question of whether you like the tone or not, not the price.

Everything depends on what you're used to but Snobassman's list of cabinets is absolutely accurate in being described as anywhere from a bit more to quite a bit more expensive than the Schroeders.

Getting feedback from the designer of a kick-ass cab - what HE recommends per my taste, made a HUGE difference in my decision to buy one of Jorg's cabs. You just can't get that w/ most of the "brand names" let alone the boutique cabs. Sure, they're pricey - any decent equipment is but when you factor in the tone, efficiency, and PORTABILITY, I still think these are definitely among the premier cabs available.

Ok...I've never tried one, or even seen one. But a Schroeder 4x10 is 50% more expensive than a Mesa. I got quoted at 1250 canadian ~1070USD, before tax(14%) and shipping. I understand there are other brands that are high priced aswell, and it is a value buy. I'm not saying they are too expensive, like I said, I've never tried one or heard the sound they produce.

Snobassman, your right I actually just started looking for cabs. I've looked into mesa, eden, ampeg, and aguilar, I undersand these are mass produced bigtime, but it is quality gear.

The Schroeder 4x10 also handles 800 more watts than the Mesa Powerhouse 4x10, and weighs 18 pounds less.
In fact, the Schroeder 4x10 handles more power than the Mesa 8x10, and weighs almost 100 pounds less!
You need to try a Schroeder before you write it off. These cabinets are radical.

just for the sake of knowledge and not arguement as i am ill informed compared to you guys. what difference does power handling have to do with anything? I dont need a million watts, and anyone that needs more than a mesa 8x10 on stage is nuts, and isnt volume more directed at speaker area than wattage? I mean, double the area is way louder than double the watts, right?

edit: I mean, if i could try it I would, but the nearest canadian dealer is about a 3 day drive from here ;).

My first line in that last reply came off harsher than I would have liked it too. I apologize for that

As for the mesa 4x10, I imagine for volume comparison you'd be more in the ballpark for the 1210.

I've not used the mesa 4x10, I've only tried a mesa 1x15 once actually as far as mesa cabs go, but to continue my experience versus other 4x10's and the reviews of others, putting the mesa 4x10 against the schroeder 410 isn't going to be a fair match when it comes to volume. Tone comes to personal preference.

You also have to note that the mesa is 8ohms(info from site, they may have a 4ohm version not listed there). Whereas jorg's are all ohm(with the exception of the 1212 which comes in 8 or 4, non-switchable). So you may get full use of your head, whereas you would need two cabs to get full power otherwise(with exception of 2ohms heads)

As for the 1210, which I would recommend if you were looking into a 4x10, bear in mind that it may be close to double the price, but the mesa is nearly double the wieght.

these are just some pro's of the schroeder cabinets. When it comes to buying one you need to measure their tone, portability and price to see what fits your needs the best. Schroeders may not be right for you no matter how much we bark about them. The final choice is yours.

The Mesa cabs are great, and you are correct, in general, getting a bigger box with more speakers is a less expensive way to more volume than cranking the wattage. To put this recent discussion into perspective, my 1210 (and the 1212 also) is just a little bit bigger than the Scout112 cab, although it is somewhat heavier. It puts out MASSIVELY more bottom and sound than the very nice Scout112. I would compare the output of the 1210 more similar to a 410 actually. I think part of that is due to the quality of the components, which is at least somewhat related to power handling. If you put 500 or 600 watts into a 1210, it just screams versus any other small cab I've ever played, and sounds punchier and fuller than a lot of larger cabs I've played. It just seems to be a little bit of a different beast than other cabs.

So, considering all that, the price seems pretty good, and size is fantastic, and the weight is not bad. All that being said.... this all only matters if you like the Schroeder sound. Some do, some don't, like any other cab.

You are right.. I was just kind of throwing statistics around there. Let me rephrase: with a Schroeder 4x10, you'd be getting a cabinet that's more versatile than other 4x10s, in a smaller and easier-to-carry package. The Schroeder handles 1,400 watts, but you can drive it with 400 or so; I've heard it powered by a Thunderfunk 420 and it sounded incredible. I've also heard it powered by my 1,600 watt rig, and it sounds even more incredible.
My comparison to an 8x10 was to illustrate that you can replace a huge cabinet with a much smaller one and actually gain something.

Objective factors in Schroeder's favor much of the time:

Weight vs.
Volume Specs and on the gig reality
Actual cabinet size per volume specs and reality
Power handling per cabinet size
Efficiency
Effective frequency range- 40 hz or lower lowend the highest for 1210 size to very large cabinets.
Price for having all the above

Subjective factors...
You may or may not like it's sound.

It seems to always boil down to the subjective. The Schroeders have in some cases all seven of the objective measurements in their favor and in other cases, just 2 or 3, but there's usually at least a couple or more especially when you go head to head in price with the ones that Snomanbass listed. Bottom line though, "better" specs or not, ya gotta like how it makes you and your playing style sound or the spec advantages mean little.

The 12 inch front firing speaker in the 1210 and 1212 is much heftier a speaker than the 10, at least in my cabinets. Did you try out the 1010 at a store or a live gig? Could you please tell us what head you were using and if you may have either on the bass or on the head used some fairly extreme bottom boost settings?

What did you end up buying by the way? Did you get a chance to try out any other sized Schroes or just the 1010? I don't know what the success/satisfaction levels are let alone even how many of the 1010's ended up being sold.

The 1210, 1212, or larger cabs seem to be the vast majority of purchases and have pretty much had a 90+% "happy to estatic" rating on the reviews turned in. Of course not everyone who was unhappy wrote up some sort of review but of the, I'm guessing 30+ of us posters that sorta monopolize the Megathread nowadays, I think there was only a couple that didn't like the sound. This is the first I've heard of the B string not being handled well so I'm wondering whether it's just because of the front loaded 10 not being hefty enough, a bad speaker or defective crossover, which doesn't happen often but can happen, or maybe there was not enough headroom, preamp overdrive created by extra bottom boost from the bass, or an weak battery in the Zon? (I"m fishin' here, just listing the typical stuff my technician would ask me if I brought in my rig with this problem) and whether others have had this issue.

I'm sure Jorg would like to know as we would, about as much of the above details of your B string issue with the 1010 as you'd be willing to share. He and the happy Schroederites really DO UNDERSTAND that these cabinets are not gonna fit everyone's taste, circumstances, style, and/or needs tonewise or otherwise.

Good luck and sorry it didn't work out for you.

I tried the 1010 in a store (As Jorge might have guessed already it was at Juan's Basses Acoustic Electric in Sacarmento).
I had bring my own amp setup and AB'd a couple of cabinets: Bergantino (various) and Aguilar.
The B string was fine an all of them. Unfortunately, Juan didn't have any 1212 or even 1210.
I loved the sound of the GS410 but, I wanted something lighter.
The Bergantino 210 fit the bill. I am a happy camper at this moment.
I went with what was available at that store, too bad the Schroeder selection was kinda narrow because I loved the size and weight!

I also bought my 410 Schroe from Juan. I understand from Jorg's post that there was something defective/damaged in shipping on that 1010 you tried out.. When I got mine and had the casters put on, we found out the crossover had become dislodged from the plate. Again, the shipping box looked like it went through world war 3 before it got to me.

Good luck on the Bergie and I hope it continues to meet your needs.

Yeah, seems to be all too common. Fedex have something against schroeder? Oh wait, USPS completely trashed a replacement driver coming to me as well.

Mine was also pretty beat up upon arriving. Nevermind that most of the damage was on TOP! Either they flipped it upside down at somepoint or put something else heavy on it.

Anyways...

On the Mesa cabs topic, only cab that I liked more than my Schro's is a Diesel 2x15 @ 4 ohms. But considering they weigh 2x that and handle 1/2 the power, it's not really a comparison. Still though, I love the sound of 2 15"s running together like that. Would like to pick up another one someday.

However, my old Schro 1210 was louder than my Mesa 2x10+1x15 setup with an M-Pulse 600. I have no idea in hell why I sold that amp, but the Schro cab blew them away. I got a Diesel 6x10 at one point too, but at 150+lbs, it just gets ridiculous for not THAT much volume.

Mesa cabs are my 2nd in line after Jorg's, but for the "everyday" working bassist, and hell even pro's, Jorg has got it goin' on.

I played an outdoor gig with my 410 a few weeks ago for a UT football game big tailgate party, and was LOUDER than the rented PA. My singer has in-ears and I was louder than they were. It was kind of cramped so I couldn't stand too far from the cab, but the drummer and singer both told me to turn down. It was awesome. Damn this thing moves air! Can't wait to get rid of my crap Peavey amp and get a Stewy 1.6 or 2.1 in there!! BRIDGED, baby!! Rawk!

I feel I have to chime in here;
Of course our sound imaginations vary and that's a blessing;
but the particular 1010 you tried out had suffered damage during shipping, which we found out later, that's why it distorted. Normally all Schroeders handle a low F# with ease.

thanks everyone for the tremendous support.

Sincerely,

Jorg

Jorg, I'll be ordering a fully optioned 310212 (flight case config & casters) in the next couple of weeks to do battle with my guitarist and his evil Mesa Boogie. I plan on powering it with a Crown macrotech 2400. I'm looking for volume and crushing massive lows, am I on the right track here ? Also, I hate clackiness and fret slap, which tweeter is right for me ?

Oh yeah! Let me tell you, the Stewart 1.6 bridged into the Schroeder 410 is the eighth wonder of the world. If you live near a cemetery, dead people will be popping up out of the ground to tell you to turn down! :D :bassist:

About how loud does the Stewy go before clipping? My Peavey seems to clip at any level, so hopefully it's just the amp and not a widespread deal. I used to have a QSC PLX1602 and it NEVER clipped, even when I cranked it. But I've heard my pre does send a pretty hot line to the amp, so I've cut that, but same prob's, oh well...

About where do you usually crank your Stewy when playing a big gig?

I wanna friggin' push this thing!

I have never come close to clipping the Stewart. I'm playing passive basses with a Sansamp RBI. At gigs, I usually have the Sansamp level at around 9 o'clock, with the Stewart turned up to about 1 p.m., and that's on the verge of being too loud on stage. The headroom is amazing.
In my basement a couple of times, I set the volume on the Stewart at 90% and the Sansamp level at about 11 o'clock, and it still only lit the green light on the Stewart (if I remember right, it's green = 3 db signal, yellow = 20 db signal, and red = clipping.) It was crushingly loud. Little bits of tile were falling from the ceiling. A testament to the headroom I have with this rig. I know I can turn up as loud as I would ever need to, and still come nowhere close to clipping. It's beautiful.

All larger Schroeders (21012, 410 & 310212) come now stocked with the Selenium horn, which is a little more aggressive than the titanium, but not harsh at all; of course either can be easily exchanged on demand without extra cost.

OK, so I'll go titanium. But what about my overall tone preference. Clean, clear, LOUD bottom end is my goal. This cab is replacing an Eden stack that consisted of a 210XLT and a 410XLT. When I dialed in my "tone" and turned it up, the Edens farted out so bad, you couldn't stand it. The only thing I've found thus far that sort of fit the bill was a Boogie Powerhouse 100 (4x10 & 15). Even at that, I only tried it powered with my SVT 4 pro. I never introduced my Crown Macrotech 2400 into the signal chain, it didn't break up with the SVT wide open. I have a suspicion that the Crown would have pushed it over the edge though. So crushing bottom end, that's very loud, vs. a Mesa triple rectifier (my guitarist's rig). Which of your cabs fit the bill. Size and weight are less important, tone is. I'd like to do this once and be done with it.
