Ericman, thanks for the info! Have you tried the 1210 yet? What is the least amount of watts (from an SS amp) would you recommend to get the potential sound out of these? I would want to do what you are doing by going one per side, but I don't want to underpower it (I can do 500w per side @ 4 ohms at the moment).

I ordered 2 1210s sight unseen  I'll let you know when I get them though. From what I've been told, these aren't particularly power hungry, so even 100 SS watts will get a decent sound. 500 watts for each cab shouldn't be a problem. That's what I'll probably end up doing as well if I get an iAMP ( it's either that or a very high power poweramp ).

We should have detuned Juneau's Dingwall to A last Saturday at the DFW GTG.

At low 'F#', I don't know how much fundamental you'd get, but I'm guessing that the 21012 or a pair of 1210 would sound pretty good down there (a pair of 1212 would probably work, but you'd lose some punch).

I don't know how well the 410 would do low 'F#'. Be interesting to find out though.
Bet a pair of 410 on the floor would, but that'd be a damn scary system (have a mirror image pair built with the angled baffles towards the outsides of the pair?).

My intention is to order a 1210, I would be pumping the full 550w of my amp at 4 ohm I believe.

Jorg has said that although tons of power is nice, 300 watts will do just fine for a 1210. My (admittedly brief) experience with these cabs would tend to confirm this. I've used it with my iamp800 (800 watts into 4 ohms) but I've also used it with one side of a Stewart World 1.2, which is 300 watts into 4 ohms, and it was thunderous.

Or just flip one upside down, assuming you have the ones with the high frequency driver still in the middle (I guess he's raised it up to the upper right hand corner on the newer cabs).

OK, you guys that have experience with the 1210 and the 21012, I am trying to choose between these two cabinets.

I want the articulation of a ten, and the bottom of a twelve.

Does the 21012 sound noticeably deeper than the 1210? How much louder does it 'seem'? Yes, I have read the specs, but I want to hear the opinions of people who have heard both of these cabs.

Does the 21012 sound good at low volume? Is it overkill for quiet gigs, or for medium volume gigs with PA support?

How much power do I really need for each of these cabs? I am going to pre/power amp route, so the power isn't a real big issue, but I would like to know what kind of $$$ I am talking about for a power amp.

Tuff call man. The 21012 verse the 1210, both really have the tight punch with the depth I like. Its tuff to compare one 1210 to one 21012 at high volume. While the 1210 will run with most any 212 or 310 or something in that 800 watts range the 21012 is 1200 watt rated and really runs past a 410 and up to 610 cabs. Now to say either is to loud, its a matter of how loud you want to turn the cabs up. It doesn’t take that much power to get the cab moving, however like with any cab the more power you put into it the more it opens up.
I personally do all power amp/preamp’s and I like power. Nothing wrong with headroom! It allows your speaker’s to perform better!
Rule of thumb, always have more power then the cab is rated at. If you can’t then try to get close, but its always nice to have at least the rating of the cab and preferred to have 300+ over the cab rating for headroom.

The Crest Amps are my personal choice!

Hope that helps, or at least give my opinion.

Thanks

I have two worries about the 1210. First, is it going to be loud enough for my loudest gigs? Has anybody used one outdoors, with no PA support? That is a rare gig for me, but has happened a couple of times.

Second, with it way down there on the ground, am I going to be able to hear any highs at all?

this thing was so loud it literally caused me pain. my wife and baby were in the truck outside of brians shop with the windows up and she goes "what the heck were you doing in there, plus ur gettin sloppy" lol. i think youd be fine. it was louder with more control that any 2x10+15 rig i have heard.

Em, don't forget the Schroeder 410. If you want to play through mine, you're more than welcome. If timing was right, I might even be able to let you borrow it for a gig.

Remember, I had a Berg 322 (1x12 + 2x10 + Tweeter) that I traded for the Schroeder 410 (plenty powerful and tight low end).

No problems with the highend, even though it's low to the ground. If you need more highs, you can tilt it. The main reason that cabs on the ground have muted highs has more to do with the increased angle from the tweeter to your ear than the actual distance.

If you only require the extra volume on a few of your gigs, get the 1210. You can always add a second cab for those big shows and your back will thank you rest of the time. Perhaps you could get 2 1210's?

From my experience, I would also have to agree that the 1210 is very easy to hear from right above it. Very lightweight, but LOUD! I heard it through a 300 watt Mesa Walkabout and it was rockin'. And as was mentioned, it will probably just be even better at double or more wattage. They can definitely take it.

At the size that both the 21012 and the 1210 are, they will never be truly overkill for any show, small or otherwise. But basically, the 1210 could definitely handle all small shows. The 21012 I felt had a bit more bottom than the 1210. I couldn't discern a difference in highs, but I didn't get to spend enough time listening or trying it out in different situations. But with 2x10s front facing and the 12 being internal, I'm sure it had more punch as well. The 21012 or even the 410 would be highly likely to handle them big shows. And a doubling on any of the cabs? Definitely.

If I had the funds, I'd get the best of all worlds and pick up a 21012 and a 1210. The 1210 for the small intimate joints. The 21012 for the bigger venues. And pair them up with high wattage power for causing madness and mayhem! :bassist:

Or something...

thought i might offer my .02.ive used the 1210 for a while now and in several situations.ive used it on two outdoor gigs without a monitor but with a pa.i could hear myself both times but it would have been great to have another as i worked the cab pretty hard.if you are talking about no pa(bass not running through a pa at all)i would say you need the bigger cab.lo-freqs 410 sounds great.however in my situation, the 410 is way overkill as i almost always have pa support and the 1210 is plenty.even on a huge stage the 1210 cuts through.a small to med club its the perfect size.im currently checking out the 1212.its a bit louder than the 1210 and sounds bigger.i trying different eq settings in gigs as it doesnt cut through quite as well as the 1210.anyway if i had a gig outdoor with no pa help i wouldnt want to take only a 1210.thats why im buying a second smaller cab for situations like that.hope that helps a little.

I'll echo a bit of that. I'm quieter then I believe most you are, but very "up front" at the same time. Indoor and out, small and medium (no big gigs for me yet with this band)... no issues with being heard by stage or room.

The more I use my 1210 the more I know Jorg was right and it's the perfect cabinet for me!

Schroeder 2x1210 anticipation update: Cabs arriving Friday :hyper: The two cabs should make an amazing combination... they should be just like the 21012, only deeper, slightly louder, and easier to move :smug:

All right Eric! I'm trying one 1210 should get it next week. Two would be even more bootay than one 21012, you'll have an extra 12. I'm looking forward to being impressed, because I love my Bergies. I do want one single cab to carry that will do the work of my two mini Bergs not that there hard to move, but I need them both all the time and sometimes I just want to carry one cab. Truely though, I'm getting so lazy I want to have a cab everywhere I play so I don't have to bring one.... like at rehearsal etc.

Tombowlus has a smorgasboard of cabs... he's one of my heros. Someday Tom, we will gorge ourselves on cab/gear delights.
