I agree with Larry Kaye. Excess volume can be an ear killer. I've always tried to be protective of my hearing, although in the past I've been involved with some groups where the onstage volume could compete with 8" howitzers and my hearing protection wasn't always adequate. I have some tinnitus as a result. I've know a lot of musicians over the last 40 years whose hearing has been irreparably damaged by very high SPL environments with inadequate ear protection.

I wouldn't think that more than a couple of Schroeder's cabinets, or any other cabs with 100dB to 104dB sensitivity, would be necessary for on-stage. Protect those ears. Hearing once damaged doesn't usually improve much. I've been using Ear Love hearing protection recently rather than ear plugs, although I still use them when I think I need them for the additional 10-15dB attenuation. Although I'm not after max volume, I don't like to use much compression. So I use fairly high powered amps for the extra head-room for clean sound on stage, especially with styles which have a wider dynamic range. But I make sure the ears are protected.

I use a 1210 and a 1212... not to be louder though. I'm running the same volume as I did with just the 1210, I can just roll back the amp a bit and let a little more of the subtlety & dynamics come through. I hate jamming in a "too loud for the room" band! I've quit a few that felt volume=feel

OK... maybe it's just the confidence of knowing I can bury most guitarists within a 3 state radius :smug: :bassist:

I'm not an aural (watch how you say that! :eek: ) expert but I think a lot of my hearing loss can be attributed to standing next to cymbals and g#@%^r amps. Loud bass never seems to make my ears ring. See, another reason why we RULE! I could be wrong but the lower freqs don't seem to stress my ears. Oh, there were a few years of main gun tank fire that may have contributed. :rolleyes:

Good point, and I pretty much agree with you. Loud and excessive bass usually makes my head hurt as opposed to my ears ringing and bringing pain. I'm sure it does as much damage, though, which is why you still need ear protection. I have some decent plugs, but need to invest in some better ones. We're saving up for in-ears though, so that may be kind of a waste. We'll see.

The sub frequencies don't cause any hearing loss, it's the loud upper frequencies that do all the damage.

You're right, but low frequencies require muck more energy to cause damages, as opposite to a loud cymbal that can be truly deafening.
I think this can be related also to the lowest efficiency of the ear at the extremes of the sonic spectrum.
Low notes requires much more energy to be heard, and so in fact muchmuch more energy to cause damage, I think...

You know I don't, but I remember reading such a thing in the past, and it specificly was stating that the frequencies that cause hearing damage started in the midrange and went on through the highs in the spectrum. I think what people get confused on is that Sub frequencies and Bass Playing frequencies are two different things. I believe that 20-80 hrz (Sub Frequency) has very little effect on hearing damage, but 100 or 125 hrz and above can be associated with hearing loss.

Well, I tried this at a gig and up close it sounded fine, but it just seemed something was missing from the normal solidness of the sound out at some distance from the cab.

Really. That's interesting. I may have to A/B that next time we have a show in a couple of weeks. I've only played it vertical, so I donno how different the sound is.

Hmm! Who knew.

Just having recevied my Schroeder 1212 here in the UK had to post that I am very impressed with every aspect of this cab.
Its small but so clear and powerful. My initial reaction was as though it has made the tone coontrols on my Dingwall and NS Design work again (I was using Ashdown ABM).
Rehearsed with it once and drummer said was great tone that never had before.
First gig out tonight and recording at the weekend, so see how it goes !

Great service from Jorg and if anyone in the UK is thinking of buying, dont hestate.
