I have no need whatsoever for two boards but, with too many pedals I like and don't want to get rid of but can't fit on my current pedal board, what else could I do but make up a smaller board?
I don't know it it truly fits an accepted definition of "compact", but it is smaller than what is now my main board.
The path is:
TC Electronic PolyTune 3 tuner --> TC Electronic Spark Booster clean boost --> Spaceman Effects Saturn VI harmonic booster --> [sfx] Micro Red Dragon overdrive --> One Control Blackberry overdrive - Becos CompIQ Mini compressor --> Broughton Alway-On HPF (under board)
Also under the board is a Cioks DC7 power supply.
What do I do with them:
- Tuner - Tune and/or mute
- Spark Booster - Sometimes I use it just a clean boost, but mostly I use this to boost my lower output basses. I'll set my pedals for my highest output basses and then boost the lower output basses to about the same level.
- Saturn VI - I use this as my standard, "always on" tone. I have to set to boost the level a little with a light drive and a slightly darker than neutral tone. Works nicely with all of my basses.
- Micro Red Dragon - I have this set to give me a tone that's darker than my standard tone and has more dirt. I use this on older classic rock songs like Cream, Santana, The Doors, etc. as well as some of the older blues songs we do.
- Blackberry - On my main board, my Blueberry serves the role the Micro Red Dragon does on this board. But, despite being a Blueberry design and somewhat dark sounding, I find the "Body" control on the Blackberry (midrange) is great for giving me a raspier tone with more dirt than my standard tone. Works great on our more modern rock and blues songs or our blues rock songs.
- CompIQ - I have to set to act as a leveler to help not give me a sudden boost or sudden drop off when turning pedals on and off.
- Always-on HPF - Set to clean up any low end boominess, if necessary.
The big open space on the right? I'm planning to demo chord chart / set list apps and, if I find one I like, begin using that for chord charts and lyrics cheatsheets on gigs. In that case, I'll add a Bluetooth page turner to that spot on the board. If not, maybe I'll add am octave pedal and a DI. For now, when I need a DI to go straight into the board, I'll use a Radial JDI and send its XLR output to the board and the 1/4 inch output to my amp.
