Show off your SR's

Before you sell it take those crap elixers off and throw on some nickle rounds.
Done that :D

Secondly try rolling the treble off to about 25%, bass 50-60% and then (this is the important part) crank the mids. Voila, your once boring sounding bass now has a bit of personality (brings out some low mid growl). Didn't like mine much until I tried this.

The stock pre-amp puts a HUGE scoop in the sound.

That's what I noted too, too much scoop. And coupled with my Eden D410XLT, man I was missing those mids.

I found out that I really dig those mids (and growl) coming out of a StringRay or a Jazz bass.

I ended up buying a MIM Jazz which has a lot of grit and grind. Balanced with nickel rounds, that bass sounds really good. My bandmates (and me :-) ) prefer my Jazz to my SR700.

But I'll miss the neck and the weight of my SR.

NickRich,

Cool! I love the sound of Jazz's. I don't mind the sound of my SR now that I figured out the eq, but the main reason it doesn't get much play anymore is that the thin neck actually cramps up my hand (big hands). This is also the reason why I want to but won't buy a regular Jazz. I prefer "P" necks so am thinking about either a warmoth build or a custom order G&L JB with the big neck. Still keeping the SR though because its beautiful, has crappy resale value, and I want to teach my wife (small hands) on it. I will probably throw an aguilar pre in it for giggles.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the Elixers being crap. I like the tone they produce on all my basses.

I have an SR505 and an SRX705. I don't know much about electronics and I'm just wondering if they have active pickups? The website says for the SR505 Humbucking/passive. Does this make it a passive bass? What about the SRX? I didn't find it on the website.

the 505 is active, unless it's an old model I don't know about :P The srx is passive, I think. someone will correct me if I'm wrong soon enough anyways ^^

edit: Check the back of your bass. If it has a small panel -which will most likely say 9v battery- then it's active

The pickups are passice indeed. As valid pointed out, there is a battery in the back, but for the preamp, not the pickups. So, technically not an active, but as everyone (and myself) say, it is.
