Before going and replacing the neck, you might try some nylon tape wound strings. I am totally a rosewood guy and generally never like maple boards. But I had one on hand recently and slapped together a p bass with it. I had some old D'Addario tapes in a drawer. They really work well. I'm not a maple convert, but the tapes are less twangy than rounds and not clunky like my typical flats.
- Neck: Fender Roger Waters
- Tuners: Gotoh FB-30-LP
- Body: Allparts PBF-CAR (over silver)
- Pickguard: Fender '62RI
- Pickup: Fender Vintera II '60
- Covers: Fender ‘Pure Vintage’ (I just removed them for the photo-opp)
- Bridge: Fender ‘Pure Vintage’
- Wiring: Homemade with CTS, clothwire, Orangedrop,...
Very good bass… but I’m not feeling it. Plays very well, but there’s something about the way it sounds. I know the pickup is amazing (I chose it after playing a handful of Vintera 60’s, as they sound really good in there). It’s a twangfest on rounds, clanky strung with 17 year old Jamerson flats. Maybe I’m a rosewood guy, and need to replace the neck.
Plus, the black strings on maple board looks pretty cool.

Recently swapped necks on these guys and it made all the difference.
On the left is a MIM P body with a WDMusic fretless J neck.
On the right, an Affinity PJ body with an MIJ Jazz neck.
In their previous versions, one was a nice P, and the other was a really (too) aggressive fretless. Now I've got a nice, warm fretless and a terrific, hot fretted PJ.

Did you have to make new holes in the neck to line up with the body holes, or are the Squier matched with the Japan Fender?
Man! There are some wonderful and amazing parts basses on this thread! Really enjoy seeing them!
Probably more so than playing bass, putting together parts basses is my "thing". A hobby. A love.
I have at least 6 too many parts basses. This one is probably my favorite because of the way it looks. Nothing special except for the mini cowhide guard.
A MIM Mike Dirnt road worn lacquer white body with an Allparts Tele Bass neck + aftermarket Fender decal. S. Duncan SPB-1 P pickup. Gotoh vintage reverse tuners. Fender vintage all thread saddle bridge. Made the guard myself with real cowhide Probably got $750 in this bass. I love it's conservative, modest and somewhat "natural" appearance.

I found a guy online who specializes in gold leaf finishes for bodies and pick guards. His name is Mattia Franchin. I don't have a link handy. He's out of Italy. This was a few years ago, but I think to make a body to my exact design, with gold leaf finish, was somewhere around $500...? + shipping.so how do I get a body in that finish
