I use "Tone" setting 1 or 3 when I'm playing my SR5 and use the EQ on the bass to fine tune for each song. When I'm playing my Yamaha BB1200 or my Fender US RI '75 Jazz, I use setting 2 (mid cut)... those basses just sound sweet (IMO) through that filter. The "Clean" setting is nice as well. Not Avalon nice, but nice. What do you do when you want a "tubey" or "dirtier" tone than you get with the Avalon?
I find that if I vary the position of my right (plucking/picking) hand, I can "emulate" most any tonality I want, short of flat out fuzz/OD/distortion. For most of my applications, I just don't need to go there anyway! 
For example on the Jazz, if I pluck near the end of the fingerboard, and turn the tone knob back just a bit, the response sorta reminds me of playing through an old Fender Bassman amp... that's "tubey", right?

Yeah, true enough. I've been doing more practicing and less GASing lately and I do have a number of different, usable tones by changing hand placement and active/passive preamp options with my Bartolini's.
I just want to keep it as small as possible, and the Avalon is big, plus I like to use a BlueMax compressor, Boss TU-2 tuner pedal and Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus pedal.
I guess I could get it in a 3 space rack. I only use the SansAmp when I want a more overdriven(svt) type sound when I play rock. Most of my gigs - few and far between as they are - are "clean" jazz or non-rock gigs anyway.
I should just use the Avalon and be happy. Lord knows I couldn't ask for a much better preamp/DI.

The only other preamp that was enticing me before I got the Avalon was the single space unit that Phil Jones has on his website...
By the same token, I was also wanting to get away from having "too many" options as far as EQ was concerned. The Avalon is definitely a "less is more" approach!
What I found appealing about the Phil Jones was that it has a compression circuit included as well as all of the other bells and whistles!

Here's the rig I use at church. Ampeg SVT3 Pro and Peavey 115 BX BW cab. I'm really digging the tone, good volume too for the 400 seat auditorium.
I'm still searching for my "holy grail" amp head. I'm going to be checking out Traynor YBA200, Yorkville XS800H, and will try my Peavey Max Preamp thru a power amp to see how that sounds.
I'm also tempted just to be done with it and get a Peavey Max700 brute. Lots of headroom, and not too fussy to set up and use.

ok, truth is you go to www.photobucket.com set up a free account, post pictures there, then hit the nifty attach picture icon when responding to a thread (it has a neat little mountain and sun in it), and past the url from the photobucket pic in there. just make sure it's not huge. photobucket allows you to shrink the pix you post on there as well.
It's small, but it sounds good, it's easy to move, and goes great into any PA.

Just got the head this weekend and picked up its little brother (B100) last week. Opah!

They are wider and less tipsie that way. I don't imagine there would be any difference sonically. Also it doesn't stand as tall, (45" compared to 48") I also think it looks better a little wider.Lockout said:

Frankie, Did you try a GS412 by any chance? What was it like compared to two 212's? If not, get much lows from the two 212's? Punch? Hows that like for slap?

Compared to the 212's, I prefer the sound of the one cab, I think it was more focused and had a deeper sound. But I am probably splitting hairs. I like the portability of the two cabs and at the time I was playing through a solidstate head (Bass 750), so I could use one or both cabs as the mood struck me.
Alas, it was a bad decision (one of many) to trade in the 412. Slap is not my bag, but it does have a tweeter which gave it more than enough brightness. Here is my opinion of the GS412:

My stuff. I have two GS -212's. Never have used them both. Rig on the left is SWR SM-400 w/ Avatar B210. Rig on right is Demeter HBP-1, Bass POD ProXT, QSC PLX-3402, Aggie GS-212. Got an Avatar 112 on the way. Gonna use my Rolls Tiny Crossover with the Demeter and PLX!! Can't wait!! Already tried the 210 bi-amped with one of my 212's. It was AOK!!!
