How much is for looks and howmuch is for speaker protection? I would have thought the speakers are already pretty well protected via the nature of the design?

[[IMO it takes some of the "WOW" factor out of it. You'll get less strange looks from inquiring minds and less people coming over to ask questions about you rig.
I think only other bass players are likely to do so and they might be just as gassed to hear all this great in your face bass coming from a vintage-looking cabinet.

bgavin will answer for himself, but in my case it would be 100% for looks.
When you cart the DR250s and even an Omni into a gig, you get so many comments about how weird looking that is and so you find some soundtechs busy trying to find something wrong with it because of the paradigm shift, rather than getting on with setting up the EQ for the band.
However, having said that I leave mine bare in the front because I want people to notice them and then hear for themselves how nice they sound - "are you more concerned about how you look or how you sound?"
Some people are concerned about both so hence bgavin's suggestion on how to cater for both.

For bass horns, the grille is indeed 100% for looks. It also keeps hands out of the horn mouth braces. I watch the stage hands and roadies at shows, and they man-handle everything, making it open season on horn mouth braces.
The grille protects/hides exposed piezo drivers. This works well for those with their ears located on either side of their nose bridge. Visual acceptance is a big factor in many cases.

Without a doubt, the less one knows about how speakers work the more concerned they are about how they look. This rig is probably one of the ugliest creations ever concocted:

Note: I actually went through the trouble of replacing the red light on my RBI with a blue one. Major props to Ozzie TBer Remo for finding pop-in replacements and sending them at cost to TBers around the globe!
I got my Omni 10.5 from Maurice Carr at lunchtime today. I got home from work, and my brother had already plugged it his B-3 into it for 'testing'!
Running through an old Yamaha SS state amp (B100), the organ sounded amazing, very full and present and 3 dimensional.
Then I tried my short-scale Diplomat slab. It's semi-hollow with a dark-star in the middle. First up it sounded bad- muddy and gritty. Then we realised that the speaker was vibrating the floor. Once we raised the Omni 10.5 onto a chair, everything was good. My bass sounded very old-school and more even in all registers.
Finally, I tried my Cleveland plywood bass. It's strung with spiros E and A, Innovation G and D, with a Full-Circle pick-up. Raising the volume just raised the sound of the bass through the pick-up. It was hard to tell where the bass sound ended and the speaker began. Next up I will try it with my Sennheiser mic in the bridge.

Remember that whilst it's an awesome little cab, it is just 1 10" speaker in there so it won't perform miracles and handle the input power an 810 cab would!
Glad it got to you so quickly and safely. Once you have tried out all the permutations with your bass, please email me your thoughts. I have another enquiry for double bass and would like to pass on your comments.

Hi Bill, I'm definately going to try some of your designs! Omni15 looks perfect from responce charts, but it is just on the limit of being too big... Well, it would be a good starting point I guess.
BTW, have you seen/heard Gradient loudspeakers? Their early designs are quite intrigueing.

Well, the basic idea of that design is to control the radiation pattern so that room acoustics don't play as big role as with conventional speakers. More direct sound from the speaker and not so much reflected stuff from floor, ceiling and walls (except for the bass).

And the treble is produced by a line array that produces a horizontal beam. So altogether, little comes off the floor."

sorry to just jump in to the discussion.
i got plans for the omni 10 a week or so ago and ive been reading them over and over ever since...along with reading reviews and build journals in a couple forums
i had a few questions about somethings i noticed..
1) i got a sheet of 4x8 Arauco plywood the other day and i was wondering if i would have to cut and measure things out as i go or could i draw the cuts on the wood like it shows on the cut schedule sheet(page 28) and cut according to those?
2) ive seen pictures of omni 10's with and with out a woofer baffle... i dont own a jigsaw.. and i was wondering if i could do without it.. in the plans i got it includes the woofer baffle..
thanks for any help
