Here's an example of what I would call a bit over-stylized. It's a nearly $5k FCS example, but for that price-tag I'm not impressed with it as an 'authentic' distressed/relic look. So it can come from both sides - comically bad, and over-stylized pro.

OK, before I start, please refrain from posting your opinion of how you feel about distressed finishes right out of the gate. I am so not interested and there are other threads to vent your opinions so please, read on and decide if you would like to contribute.

What I am simply requesting are pics of any bass or guitar that has a distressed finish. It might be your bass or a picture you might have downloaded of a distressed bass or guitar. It can be a real 'time and use' induced distressing, or your own DIY cosmetic "relic" job. I will not judge the DIY finishes and would like posters to refrain from pot-shots or boring, opinionated dissertations on "fake mojo" regarding a DIY distressed finish. I just want as many examples of distressing (real or effected) as possible. Please keep the "dis" out of distressing.

Also, I don't want pics of a Fender Road Worn bass, even if your own. I know you are proud of them and good on you, but I can find pics of those all over the web.

I'm hoping to see the spectrum of instruments that have been played hard and put away wet. The better the pics the better. For me I think about Nels Clines' beloved '59 Jazzmaster, Stevie Ray Vaughns' Strat, Billy Sheehans' "wife", and Mike Watts' EB-3 when I think of beautiful battered and bruised war-horses.

Those of you who play with a little more grit and dirt (think Bethel) and play jazz basses (I know very specific group here) do you keep your pickup knob all bridge? All neck? In the middle?

That’s my sound — lots of grind (not distortion) on a jazz. I play full tone, both pickups full volume. Steel round wounds and a GK amp help too.

People forget or don't understand that their sound comes from multiple elements - the age/structure/woods of the bass (including to a large degree the neck/fb) the pu's/electronics, the strings, the amp/its settings, and most importantly how one plays that bass. That's why any bass in the hands of an experienced player can sound good. (needless to say...)

Just picked up this beauty from the Music Zoo in NY. Fender CS Super Heavy Relic 51 P in vintage white. They really nailed it in terms of look, playability and historic detail. Fiber saddles and flat head screws throughout. Plays like a dream.
