signature bass fail...

Man, this is starting to sound like all the roadworn hater threads. Don't like it? Don't buy it. In fact don't even look at the Fender website.
Just to piss you all off, I'm going to go out and buy a U2 album. Does anyone know where I can find a record store?

I've been a fan of U2 since the release of Boy.. seen them in concert several times.. and even recently posted a video of "The Edge" falling off the edge here on TB...
I'm also a huge Fender fan boy.... founder of the MIA club, first club on Talkbass... and owner of a Master built Jazz... But I agree, he's not someone I see having a signature bass. and Fender marketing is over the top with their signature models... but then I might be able to say that about half the guys with a bass named for them.

Sometimes "cosmetic changes" are what appeal to consumers. If they like something and can pay for it.....who am I to begrudge them their little pleasures?

Yeah, I saw that too. I guess he wants two different signature basses by two different companies. I wouldn't call it a marketing fail. The two different signature models are pretty different and I don't think both models would cause a problem with most bassists. Either you are going to like one or the other and most likely, not both. I don't like the Warwick Adam Clayton bass personally.

Interesting that the original point of the thread was about the fact that Clayton has two signature basses by two different companies, and now it's turned into a signature bass hate thread, and in a couple of instances some veiled (or blatant) references to folks who buy signature basses as stupid or losers. Yes, don't like it, don't buy it, and some should keep their snobbery to themselves.
As far as the original point of this thread, if Clayton has two sig basses from two different companies, then good for him, but it does seem kind of odd. Actually, I thought it was odd that Fender put out a Jazz bass with his sig on it, because I remember him playing Precisions back in the day.
I was just thinking about how odd this is when I noticed the thread. Good for Adam Clayton, but seems to be strange marketing on the part of Fender and Warwick. If I'm mistaken, I think he had another Warwick model a few yrs back.
I've never particularly wanted to have a look-alike bass from any of my heroes.
OTOH, the fact that Lee Sklar has a signature Dingwall influenced me to at least try one, based on the theory that the man has great tone, and clearly knows good gear when he sees it. Also, the fact that he can play anything, yet generally returns to his Dingwall when a fiver is needed.
Ironically, a year after falling in love with an ABZ and making the necessary sacrifices to get one, I got to play the Sklar signature, and it turned out to be my least favourite Dingwall. Different strokes...

Seriously I do not begrudge anyone's sucess but if I had to pick the single most uncreative group of the last 30 yrs it would be U2 - sad commentary on musical tastes that a mimeographed outfit using 2 chords and monotonous drones have sold so many records
It's a testimony to our collective musical education that a group clearly locked in a one dimensional approach to noise making are so sucessful
I could write a U2 knockoff in 30 seconds but be embarrassed with my own limitations simultaneously

Absolutely - I would expect he equates Disney quality product + the cash as verification of content
My point specifically - some of us still have value systems based on integrity

Most gigs are got because of a good attitude, reliability and generally agreeable nature. That might not make one a "great bass player" but if it comes down to you and another guy, and you can both handle the gig technically but the other guy has got one of the nasty holier-than-though disrespectful attitudes prevalent in threads like these, you will get the gig. You'll probably even get the gig if he can play circles around you because that's very seldom required on a gig, and most of those gigs don't pay anyway.

Nothing wrong with being an entertainer, if not an artist.
As for rejeceted from devices, I'll bet a LOT more people would reject or even "puke" if forced to have whatever you think is "art" loaded onto their devices. Sad, I agree, but true.
No sense getting an ulcer over it. Live and let die.
