Smoking pot while being in a band

nah, this thread is civil, no need to close it. Tonewood wars are much worse!

My only objective in these cannabis debates is to combat the hypocrisy of our governments and, by extension, our societies at large. I do admit to hypocrisy myself - while I would like to see marijuana legalized, I applaud the gradual de-socialization of tobacco. I would like to see a reduction in drunkeness, and the booze culture rampant is some parts of society. I oppose legalization of heavy drugs like crystal meth and heroin.

I accept that I may be wrong, but the science of the day supports my position. I would invite others to entertain the idea that they may be wrong as well, and at least educate themselves about issues, rather than parrot what they've been told by others. An educated citizenship is the foundation of democracy and of our progress as humans. In fact, our governments would serve us all better if they declared war on poverty and illiteracy rather than drugs.

Steering it away from the "pot is good or bad" aspect of this thread, the OP's bandmate sounds like he's got some problems with either the substance or depression and the substance is a symptom of it.
If he's medicating himself to the point that he can't function (whether it's with pot, alcohol, cough syrup or Red Bull for that matter) it's a whole other ball game. I've worked with non-functioning cokeheads and alcoholics and neither are any fun. People who are such stoners that they require babysitting are a drag, too. Been there, done that as well. My experience is that the only people in higher echelons of the Biz that are that impaired are typically babysat by managers, tour managers and others who often are robbing them blind because they are oblivious to what's going on around them. You can find any "Behind the Music" episode and this seems to be a recurring theme.
I don't have any moralizing flag to wave here, just sharing my observations of the past 3 decades in The Biz.....

Enough about "old weed" and "new weed"

What you are calling "old weed" was probably grown outdoors without much care by some hippie jerk. The "new" stuff is grown indoors with CRAZY attention to detail. It's not some magic new kind of pot. You know how tomatoes grow larger when properly watered and fertilized?

This.. +1000... There is a potential for a higher THC count in plants due to cross-breeding. However, just like tomatoes, if you give the plant what it needs/wants you will be rewarded with a higher yield, taste and in the case of MJ a higher potency. It is absolutely possible to have 2 people grow the same strain and have 2 completely different levels of of THC based on growing methods and nutrients used.

Also, the strains that are being bred for MM patients are being developed with a higher CBD content, which is what actually mixes with the chemicals already in your brain to relieve/tolerate pain or discomfort. Higher THC content does not necessarily provide pain relief. The big point missing is that MM patients use it to CONTROL the pain. The pain will be there, in a much more tolerable state, but without using harmful liver crushing painkillers.

BTW I do know what I'm talking about I use to have drug/alcohol problem. Been sober for 15 years. It is amazing how much extra money I have now that it isn't being wasted on drugs/alcohol.
No you don't because you make too many assumptions that anyone else who did something that you're so pleased with yourself about having quit is making all the same dumb mistakes that you did.

Just because two guys jump off a bridge doesn't mean that the guy with the bungee cord is going to end up the same as the guy without.
