So why do so many people begin their threads with "So?"

There's a member here (can't recall his username) that LITERALLY starts every single post with "So anyway...."

I've gotten very close to either PMing him about it. I even typed out a thread topic about it and decided not to post it.

Literally.... every.... single.... post.

"So anyway...."

I don't know why, but, to me, it seems pretty dismissive of everything that has been posted in a thread up until that point. Verbally, it absolutely means that. Someone will make a remark. The next person rolls his/her eyes and says "So anyway....". It sort of says "As we were saying before THIS dipstick spoke up....."

About 15 years ago, I had a co-worker make fun of me for starting every verbal conversation with the word so. Shortly afterwards, I noticed every employee (including the person pointing it out to me) starting out every conversation with so, and they still do to this day. For me, used verbally, I think it was just a way to get everyones attention. I don't think I ever started any written communication with the word so as it just seems wrong.

Starting a conversation with the word "welp" is even more annoying.

About 15 years ago, I started dating a woman who frequently began sentences with "so". I noticed it every time and it drove me nuts. I ended up marrying her and I now find myself saying it frequently.

Some have mentioned that it is common in educational settings. When we met, my wife and I were both working at a university. I've worked in education in various roles for most of my life and am now a mental health counselor, so perhaps I can use that as an excuse for my verbal tic.

The correct phrase is "thank you for having me on your show," but no one ever says this :)

In my experience in academia it was frequently a timeout when contentious questions were asked. Instead of responding with "how dare you question my conclusions," researchers would typically say "so... that's a good question" before attempting to change the subject :)

I do this unless I am expressly trying NOT to do it. To me, I guess, I like to feel like the conversation here never actually ends; only the people and the topics change. S̶o̶ THEREFORE, I use the word to facilitate a change of topic, even though the appearance of a new thread would already imply as much.

I can deal with just about anything except the “wassup” and its variants that so many YT videos start off with. Although ”Hello beautiful people…” has been threatening to overtake it recently.
