I draw the line at any/all William Shatner covers
And I do believe he wrote the original pre-WWII tune “Brown Shirt Guy”, but it fizzled into obscurity until V. Morrison ripped off the riff and modified the title
Back in the (way, way back) day we were doing the wedding/private party thing and we played anything that got the joint jumpin'. But now, there are so many great tunes to chose from, and even the kids have heard most of them, that you might as well play the ones you like and friggin' NAIL them. Folks like well executed songs played with passion even if they are not chart toppers. And if the crowd insists on something you hate, remind them that all requests have to be submitted in writing on a $100 bill. Then fake the crap outta that sucker!

You learned a song by a couple of brothers from Scotland for the festival day of the patron saint of Ireland?

Now that we're all aware of the lamentably sordid past of Hess, the only remaining question I need answered is :
After Hess and Wessel gave control of the chicken farm over to Himmler, did Hess learn any Proclaimers songs before he flew to Scotland for his extended "vacation" there?
Or did he refuse to perform them as well?
Maybe he meant to go to Ireland.
I play anything that I (at least) minimally enjoy playing. I wouldn't be caught dead listening to folk, country or most pop, but if the bass line is good, I'll be happy to play it, e.g. Abba's "Dancing Queen", or most of Duran Duran.

In a 90s and 00s cover band (some 80s too) there's a lot of songs I thought would suck but people love them.
However, Smells like teen Spirit by Nirvana and All the small things by Blink 182 will never happen.
We play other tunes by them so I think we've avoided having to.

This is the right attitude if you play in a cover band, as I do.
I used to have a "no play" list. Sure, it was full of cliches, but there's a reason they're cliched. Sometimes it's because they are so popular that every band does them because every crowd loves them. Other times it's because they're perceived as "so easy to play" that every band does them.
If I'm on a gig I'll never refuse to play a song because I don't like it.

I think everyone, pro or no should get one song that they don't have to freakin' play again ever, no matter what. The caveat is that if you brought it into the world, you can never take it out. In a five-piece, that's five songs. The audience can deal with it. Mine is "Sweet Home Chicago." What's even special about that song? And if you ask for Freebird, you're also gonna have to hear me sing "Simple Man" AND YOU'RE NOT GONNA LIKE IT!
