source audio c4

I finally had time to sit down with the C4 yesterday, after a couple of hours of play I must say I am impressed! Tracking is damn good and often edges the FI. I think it will be at least a week before I am decently experienced in all aspects of the pedal. I am having a few struggles though, perhaps some of you may share some advice:

1) I am struggling to open the filters 100% from low Cutoff settings, this is with the depth maxed.

2) I am also struggling to get a stable tone when pitching the saw waves up from the input. Pitched up sounds are distorted and glitchy, pitch equal or below are not.

3) I am having some struggles retriggering ADSRs without pauses between my notes. Is this just another pitch tracking characteristic of the tracking algo like how they struggle with octaves?

I am also struggling to put my bass down after a few hours of playing the C4 but that is mostly a good thing.

A few suggestions...play around with the distortion/drive phase before the filter to see if you can get it to feed differently for the Filters. I have a feeling that may be where the problem in the filter opening may be for you. I've found that getting the filters to trigger as you expect combined with gain staging may be the difficult part of the operation.

Second, check the settings in the ADSR/envelope section. Things like the gate being errantly engaged and up may be giving you trouble.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think there is something unconventional about the algo. If you don't invert the envelope the modulation should modulate ABOVE the set Cutoff, however, on my C4 it does not follow this universal convention. It will modulate above then below my set Cutoff. I don't mind that retriggering the ADSR is hard on fast lines, I love legato when running mono lines. However, when the frequency dips below my set cutoff it can effectively mute/muffle the notes.

Also, the Key tracking on the filter is all messed up, it seems to effectively lower the set value of the cutoff instead of increasing/modulating the cutoff above the set value. For example, on every other synth, if you increase key tracking it will only modulate above the set cutoff value. On the C4 I have to max my Cutoff to match the setting before I raised the tracking.

So far, the only "keeper" patches I have built are Distortion into the Filter with the non-ADSR envelopes. But they do sound great and I wasn't able to set down my bass until I played the C4 for a few hours. Despite the caveats above, I am loving the pedal.

I think I hit an inflection point in programming the dynamics of this synth. It seemed the only way to get glitch free play in my dirty style of play was to bypass the oscillators. But this morning I experimented with a few different envelopes to tailor the amp dynamics of an oscillator, I found a sweet-spot.

Then I used the other envelope to find another sweet-spot with a 6-pole filter and damn! I was in sweet robot shart heaven. Didn’t mater how dirty or fast I played, it felt like my bass but sounded like a Sharty Robot! I was in control, not a glitch in ear.

Loving this pedal!!!!

You must upload the Sharty Robot preset!

Finally got this last week, I couldn't be happier. Found a couple Moog presets that were just what I was looking for! Now I just gotta get my Manta envelope sound replicated to the C4 and get the OC2 sound maybe a bit closer. This pedal had me playing for hours straight, so much fun!!

I'm giving some serious thought to getting the C4 to replace my SB2 Manta. If I read the stuff correctly, the C4 has everything in it that the Spectrum Filter has, plus the extra synth stuff. Is that correct?

Also, in a more technical vein: I'll have the C4 connected to the Neuro hub for MIDI control. I'm using the Soleman controller with the hub on MIDI ch1, Nemesis on ch2 and Strymon Mobius on ch3. I also have the Aftershock connected to the hub using scenes for preset change. I understand how to change presets on the C4 using MIDI CC 103/104. I want to be sure that the hub will pass the CC messages to the C4 without messing with anything on the Aftershock. Should I change the MIDI channel on the Aftershock so it will ignore anything forwarded by the hub? Does the hub forward MIDI CC messages on all channels to the connected pedals? If I put the Aftershock on MIDI ch4, will it receive CC messages sent by the Soleman on ch4 with the hub set to ch1?

You are correct the C4 has 4 voices with wave forms, sequencer, pitch shifter and harmonizer and additional features that the Spectrum does not have. For 50 bucks it is a lot of fun if you are inclined to experiment or or interested in using community sounds in your live set.

For the midi stuff others will have to answer.

As long as everything is on its own midi channel you can send midi cc messages and not have to worry about something else receiving it.

side note: is that a temple trio 28?

I’m getting in the market for a new board and that one is on my list, how do you like it? Does it have a lot of flex like people say? How hard is it to run those midi cables through the slots?

It is a trio 28. I like it because of the space underneath and the mounting plates that they use. I have 2 power supplies and the hub mounted underneath. MIDI cables are a pain to route through the slots. If I redo the board, I’ll use Warwick’s flat cables instead.
It has a little flex, but it’s never been a problem. I’m not gigging often right now, but other friends that do haven’t had any problems.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully SA comes out with a hub update to make the C4 integrate better. Then I’ll give it a try. I don’t want to have to reinvent the wheel, as they say, to get my current sounds to work after swapping 1 pedal.
