I’m making some headway in my triad and II-V-I implementation.

I’ve got three-note triads (i.e. no doubling of the bottoms note an octave higher) working with buttons to shift between inversions.

I’ve got the 3rds and 7ths working in my major II-V-I progressions working so that the voice leading is smooth. That is, the 7th of one chord falls a semitone to form the 3rd of the next chord whereas the third of one chord remains at the same pitch to form the 7th of the next chord. I’ve used the harmoniser to do this but implemented it such that the same C4 voice (1-4) plays the same positional note in the chord, i.e. voice 1 always plays the lowest note in the chord, irrespective of what chord tone it might be. This involves using midi to switch the interval of the harmoniser when changing chord. It also involves some octave shifting depending on whether the bass note is moving up a 5th or down a 4th to the next root.

I’ve managed to implement it using only two buttons on the MC8. The first is a momentary button for when you play the dominant chord which inverts the positions of the 3rd and 7th so as to preserve the smooth voice leading. The second button allows you to choose whether the bass moves up-down-up or down-up-down while keeping the voicings played on the same register in bothe permutations.

It still needs some finessing. I’d like to combine it with having the option to choose whether the first voicing has the 3rd on the bottom or has the 7th on the bottom. (EDIT - I’ve just realised I’ve already achieved this via the momentary switch! I could still add another button which reverses all the behaviours though.) I then need to add the 9ths and 5ths/6ths, which I’ll have to do manually via fixed interval offsets as the C4 only allows two automatically harmonised pitches at once. I just hope I don’t run out of messages on a single button but fear I probably will. I still think I may be able to get it all into a single MC8 (and possibly an MC6) bank.

I’ll post some clips when I get to a suitable point that I’m happy with.

Hi Folks - first, thanks for all your contributions to the SA C4 thread. I’ve learned a lot and ended up purchasing a C4.

I love it so far and am working to incorporate it into a live setup. Based on the thread, I see that it can be controlled by a device so long as it acts as a MIDI Host. While the Disaster Area Mini is recommended, in the Disaster Area DMC6 Gen3 manual, there appears to be an update that gives it host capability:

Would this work with the C4 without incorporating the Neuro Hub?

My ultimate goal is using a L6 HX Stomp and C4 with one controller. I’m not opposed to using the hub, but want to eliminate as many potential failure points as possible.

OK here's a first taste. The first clip uses a basic patch and just goes through each voice first showing that it is leading correctly then I put them together. The second clip is a using a much nicer patch, which I've shared on Neuro.



@rsmith601 the fully accessible and configurable MIDI map is what makes this possible and I've barely scratched the surface here; I'm looking at ways to change the key centre of the harmoniser on the fly and maybe even be able to slip in chord substitutions by changing the scale type on the fly. Lots of fun but also quite overwhelming.

All of the Gen3 DMC controllers have built-in USB Host capabilities and can be used without any additional devices (apart from the proper cable from DMC to C4). The Mini is just the most commonly used one because it is the smallest one-device solution to access presets on the C4. I use a DMC-8 Gen3 with my C4 and it works great!

My C4 has firmware 1.14.
Neuro app informed me of an update. Done... app says to turn the pedal off and on again.
Done.
Now my C4 is still 1.14 and there are no more updates.
Is it normal? I use Mac Book Air.

C4 update firmware is 1.18. The editor shows the new number in the left-hand pane just before it tells you to turn it off after clicking update. Did a yellow border appear around the download arrow before you updated?

He downloaded some "blocks" and said to restart the pedal.

Did the desktop editor update properly? Perhaps they forgot to embed the latest C4 firmware in the Mac editor update. The windows one works fine.

Another thought - are your documents usually stored on an external drive? If so, make sure it is connected otherwise the editor won't see the latest firmware update file so will think you are up to date. (happens to me on Windows.)

I just wanted to give another shout out to Source Audio's incredible customer service!

I'm having an issue with my C4's USB jack which is probably my fault.
SA immediately sent me a prepaid mailing label so that I could send it in to be fixed.

I’ve just had an idea about how to create a chord freeze function on C4! I think I might even be able to do it so that you’d have the options to have it sustain indefinitely, have it die away naturally on its own or have it retrigger using any note.

Sadly I don’t know if I’m going to get time to try it out as I’m going to be away from my gear for a couple of weeks.

I’ve got proof of concept at least. I need to see what works best for putting the various parts being controlled into single buttons.


I’ve hit a bit of a snag with a possible C4 bug that I’ve reported but it’s not too drastic for my current implementation.

Probably needs a bit of refinement within the patch itself to deal with potential volume jumps when engaging it.

This idea isn’t necessarily patch specific, though this clip was done using a patch I posted a few days ago. I’m doing it by using a MIDI controller to send certain CC messages which change a few parameters within the C4 in real time.

All done with just the C4 and a Morningstar MC8 controller. Any MIDI controller that can send multiple CC messages simultaneously will work.
