The best bet to control the C4 via an HX is to get either an SA Neuro Hub (connected to C4 through the control jack) or DMC micro.ghost or DMC Micro (attached time C4 via USB) and attach one of these hubs to the HX via standard MIDI cable (though I can’t verify this works, it should work!)

Thanks mate! I also have an expression pedal that I would like to be able to use for both units (HX+C4) So it would be better the hub or the dmc micro for this purpose?

If you think you may get another SA pedal the hub may be the way to go.

I’m not sure if expression plugged into the HX can work as external MIDI control? If so, then both options should work. If not, I do know that expression from the Micro would be configurable to send MIDI to both the HX and C4

So the dmc micro can do it. Maybe someone here has both units and the neuro hub instead and can give us some light.

I think there are probably a number of people with both an HX-Stomp and C4, but I’ve never heard of anyone controlling the C4 with the Stomp. Pretty cool if possible! The DMC Micro would give you a couple more buttons to use for utility both with the C4 and the Stomp, so may be worth looking into!

I'm running the HX stomp and a C4, waiting on the SA dual expression to arrive. Supposedly, I should be able to control , so far as expression, the C4 with the mini plug and the HXS with a 1/4" cable. For controlling the C4, ala patch changes, I use my phone.

I wonder if there are any plans to combine a MIDI host and a neuro hub together. Like a Neuro hub 2 with multiple TRRS ports and USB host ports to control the range of Source Audio products.
Keep this part just as it is
DIN in and out, USB in/out, TRS exp in, TRRS exp In.
Maybe just add a second TRS exp in and two TRS exp outs.
Just an idea now there are numerous Source Audio pedals the understand MIDI over USB.

There are a couple of ways that you could implement expression pedal use for both devices.

As @voodoobassist suggested, the SA Dual Expression would likely be the easiest to implement as you could connect the TRRS out from the DE to the C4 and the TRS to the HX Effects. Quite simple and no need for extra midi programming, but you would need to purchase the Dual Expression Pedal, which may not be the best solution for you if you already own an expression pedal.

For expression from the HX Effects, the intermediary midi device you use to connect the HX Effects to the C4 such as the SA HUB or a USB midi host device such as the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] or the Kenton Midi USB Host, will pass the expression CC message from the HX Effects to the C4.

Alternatively you could use a midi controller with USB Host capability such as the Disaster Area DMC Gen3 products (micro, 3XL, 4, 6) to connect to the C4, but as you already have the midi control with the HX Effects, this may be redundant. Also, depending on your midi chain you may need a special Midi Y-cable since the DMC Gen3 devices do not have midi input.

I was hoping to just use an adapter to the pedal to control patch changes and such with the boss unit but it sounds like I need to buy another piece of hardware. Same question here, I bought the DMC.micro to act as an interface between the C4 and MS-3. I've got the DMC micro attached and working (can change c4 patches with it) but cannot get the MS-3 via the DMC micro to change C4 patches. Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

As mentioned above, the DMC devices don’t have MIDI In AND Out jacks but you can get a splitter cable from them to give you MIDI In control (otherwise you are just sending MIDI signals out of the DMC). With the MIDI In from the MS3 and MIDI thru enabled on the DMC, I believe the C4 should respond directly to MIDI commands sent from the Boss.
If you don’t need the extra control of the DMC Micro controller, then the DMC Micro.Ghost is sufficient as a direct interface for the C4 and has separate built-in MIDI In and Out jacks. The DMC Micro controller you have is useful if you want to have separate footswitch control of the C4, and you can create DMC presets of different C4 functions that can then be triggered by the MS3

There may be another cable around that does the same, it is pricey for a cable! I got a DMC for use as my main MIDI controller knowing that it would have easy interface with the C4, but as a supplemental MIDI box it will require that extra cable to receive MIDI input.

It might be worth considering the Neuro Hub as an option instead for your needs, as pretty much the only utility of the Micro.Ghost would be as a MIDI interface for the C4 while the Hub has other tricks up its sleeve and could also interface with other Source Audio pedals in the future. I also think the 1/8” plug interface that the Hub uses with the C4 is a more reliable connection than mini USB on a pedalboard.

Been wanting to try one for ages as I used to own a Wonderlove and it was great for putting octave and fuzz in the loop to create synth-like sounds. The Chromatron is even better I feel, as it works much better as a stand-alone envelope-controlled filter than the Wonderlove did.

I put my EMMA electronic Okto Nøjs in the loop and dialled in the following sound:



Movinngruvin asked if I could replicate this on the Source Audio C4. I’ve had a crack and got in the ballpark and have shared the presets on my Neuro feed:

I’ll port these onto the Spectrum too, though they won’t be exactly the same. The octave distortions in the Okto Nøjs are slightly gated and I have achieved this on the C4 by assigning an amp envelope to those voices and using the envelope’s gate control; the Spectrum doesn’t have the ability to assign an envelope to the voices so the patches will be a little noisier.

Can someone point me to where I can become less of a noob at creating my own presets for the C4? I am failing miserably so far.
