Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

I asked for help in a different thread, but I feel I might get more luck here.
I'm trying to get the dmc.micro plus to send midi clock to my C4 without the whole thing freezing up. Has anyone out there had any luck setting up such a thing?
Looking at the manual ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed])
thus far I've
- set up the c4 to sip USB-MIDI power check (p22)
- ticked the little "MIDI Clock" box and set it to quarter, like on the dmc (pp30-31)
- reset my C4 to factory
- reset my dmc.micro to factory.
and not in that particular order, or just once.

@rsmith601 just to clear up a related minor point, my Ultrawave shipped with a USB Mini B to USB A cable, nothing with USB C. However, I have an adapter that I'll be testing...

you’ll need to update the dmc and use the multi jack, use the included neuro cable and connect to the control input, midi clock should work well over that connection vs usb.

Forgive my ignorance as I'm very new to MIDI.
Do you mean that I should not use the USB cable, but only the multijack? Or a combination?
With the neuro cable, I tried with each of the different MIDI settings for the DMC (Tip, Ring, Tip+Ring), with the USB disconnected.
After reconnecting the USB, I tried N-C and N-O tap tempo with the neuro cable.
But no joy on either one.
I'm very hopeful that I'm just missing some simple switch that I mucked up at some point. I also tried another factory reset, but again no joy.

Hey SA peeps, new question/issue...

I'm using my Boss MS-3 to control my Source Audio pedals via the Neuro Hub...But, I'm having an issue that may just be "the way it is"....

When switching to a OD patch on my Aftershock, there is a considerable delay in making the change, up until now I've always been using drive/dist. as a "always on" or "always off" kinda thing, but the song I'm working on now requires a mid song switch, and it needs to be as close to immediate as I can get it...is there a setting I'm missing that would address this latency? Or is it just the way it is?

Also should note, the Aftershock is NOT in one of the MS-3 loops, or I could resolve it that way...It's in my direct signal chain (post MS-3).

Thanks for any tips you can offer!

it's not a specific Source Audio or C4 issue, you will see patch change latency with most powerful digital pedals. I see the same situation for Strymon, Eventide, EHX. Unlooping a pedal with a looper / switcher...that's fast and can be done during a song without any latency risk. Changing patches mid song...that's more tricky and I tend to change patches between songs only. That's the physics of digital pedals. Hey...still quicker than a manual dial in across 18 analogue pedals.

Hey, I've tried to quote the response to my post from a few weeks ago - it's a limitation of digital pedals sadly, we just need to practice adjusting for the latency ;) It's a fun game when you get into it!

Thank You!

Yeah, I read that post that you had quoted, and I feared that was also my issue.

Unfortunately, in this very specific situation I can't adjust for the latency...at least not in a way that sounds good or flows well.

My only solution I can think of is to use a "stomp box drive pedal" for this situation like my Fifth Gear or something...I was just hoping to cover ALL my drive/dist. needs with the Aftershock, but that's not going to work with this latency issue (not SA's fault, just seems to be the nature of the beast).

Or, as was suggested to me in my FB MS-3 users group, I could use one of the drives built into the MS-3, which switch much faster/cleaner...Though probably don't sound as good...I'll be tweaking those drives before I put another drive pedal back on the board though...I have work to do.

Are you running the latest firmware from disaster area? This update was made a few months ago to work.

I’m probably going to end up looking for a different solution to control preset switching on my UltraWave and C4…definitely not a Source Audio issue, this is a Line 6 issue.

I’m currently using my Helix Floor, along with the Neuro Hub. It works great, and I’ve got 4 switches on the Helix set up to go up and down on presets (2 switches per SA pedal).

My issue is, the Helix doesn’t show the changing presets/values, so I’m stuck winging it to figure out which preset I’m on. I’d like a controller that at least shows a 0-128 on a screen so I know where I’m at….Any suggestions on a smallish-size midi controller with a display that shows basic info, that I can control the two pedals (just to switch presets) separately with?

If the Helix would just show *something*, I’d be happy. The scribble strip above each assigned button just says “CC Value”, and doesn’t change, even though they are actually going up or down through the pedal presets with each press of the button.

I just got my c4 working with my dmc micro pro but I have a weird question. Whenever I use either up or down on the dmc it automatically Activates the pedal . Is there any way to have the preset patch be cycled without the pedal going active ?
The engage/bypass state is saved as part of the preset data so if you want it to load in the bypass state when sending PC messages, you need to set the state in the preset via the editor and resave.

Alternatively, there are separate CCs for loading/scrolling presets in either engaged or bypassed state.

(Reading the manual is a good idea generally.:))

With all my newer SA pedals, I set the midi Map so that CC103 is patch recall / pedal in bypass mode and CC104 is patch recall Engaged mode. The value sets the patch number. So value 0 sets patch 1, etc.
I also set CC 105 to Enable / Bypass toggle, that can come in handy sometimes. Each patch on the C4 can be set to bypass / engaged too. You can also set the pedal to engage or bypass at start up. So there's a lot of options.

Are you using the DMC in “Device” mode or “Preset” mode? In Device mode you choose your engaged/bypassed option for scrolling by engaging or bypassing the C4 using a hold action on the DMC (you will then engage/disengage the C4 manually when playing as needed and the bypass state when scrolling will remain whichever way you have chosen). When you engage the C4 this way you should see a dot on the DMC screen (or an LED on the larger DMC controllers) to show that it is configured to send an “engage” message. If you want it to send a “bypass” message with every scroll then you need to disengage the C4 using the DMC footswitch hold (so the dot/LED representing the C4 on the DMC screen should go away). Then the DMC will send a bypass message with every scroll. Keep in mind that messages between the DMC and C4 are one way only- so the bypass state or any other settings externally on the C4 at any point mean nothing at all to the DMC (it just sends messages blindly to control the C4).

If you want to configure different bypass states for different presets then you need to use “Preset” mode on the DMC and you can create presets internal to the DMC that send two messages- one to engage the C4 preset of your choice, and a second to choose bypass state of choice for that particular DMC preset when selected. Programming “Preset” mode on the DMC is pretty straightforward and requires no direct MIDI message programming- you are essentially selecting states from your Device mode and saving those as presets.

The DMC pedals are configured to be set up for basic functionality automatically without a user needing to program any sort of MIDI messaging or even understand many of the basics of MIDI. This makes them a simple option for people unfamiliar with how MIDI works, but also doesn’t help a user to learn/understand how MIDI works and requires learning how to program the DMC instead of learning to program MIDI. The DMC manuals have all this info, but it is still easier to understand when you actually know what the MIDI operations happening behind the scenes in the DMC consist of.
