Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Hey folks.

I have several SA pedals. I'm looking to see if anyone has advice on using the C4 to completely replace the Lunar Phaser. There are some nice Phaser and Chorus presets in the community, but looking for Flanger presets for the C4 doesn't seem to have a lot. Any tips on making a setting, or any good preset to download for a Flanger? Is the C4 truly capable of making the Lunar Phaser obsolete on my board?

Thanks.

The C4 got some nice phaser sounds dating back to the original Soundblox Bass Envelope Filter. Back in the day, we noticed that bass players were diggin the EP-1's phaser sounds. We were able to capture those and in-they-went to the new BEF pedal at the time. Those phasers have been in all envelope filter pedals since, including the Spectrum and C4.
Flangers and Chorus (and phasers from the Orbital and beyond) are different. They have not been added along the way. So, in my view......the C4 cannot replace the Lunar. Others might want to chime in..,...

I'm sure it could but why why not have the C4 just do synthy stuff and the lunar do modulation stuff. I have both but use each for it's particular strength..

I think if you're crunched for space or on a mini board the C4 can do some phaser and chorus sounds decently well, but if you want it all gotta have both. I actually plan on having the C4 do filters, synth, chorus, phaser on my small board for travel as it can get those sounds, but the big board is going to have dedicated pedals for chorus/phaser and filters.

That’s what I love about the SA pedals, so much flexibility packed in with top quality sounds. I actually used the C4 to replace a micro POG completely. Just wish it had a whammy setting on the expression options. Maybe the C4-2 will :)

Keep it! mixing the c4 and lunar can be really nice..

Planning on it. The LP sounds great. I was considering buying a Darkglass Infinity to replace some other pedals (not related to this thread) on my board and had the thought about the LP really being needed or not. I’ll almost certainly be buying an EQ2 instead of the Darkglass though.

Would love to see a larger format (collider style, but larger would be fine too) EQ3 in the future with a DI, aux in, headphone amp, a low pass filter, stereo in/out, two switchable effects loops (think boss LS-2), and a 2nd (or 3rd!) programmable footswitch on the unit to assign to boost, channel switching, or whatever. Throw in a comp and I’d pay $600 for that in a heartbeat. Put in tremelo for fun and have the effects loops bounce between output jacks - now we’re just getting silly.

Also kinda surprised SA doesn’t have some kind of midi-controlled looper pedal. Drop in some mp4 files (a la TC Electronic ditto +) and trigger samples on the go - but maybe that’s more appropriate on a PC?

Alright, done dreaming now. Keep up the good work Source Audio. After I get the EQ2 and replace my tuner and EQ, my board will be like 11/14 parts your products.

TC has the Plethora, where you can get different pedals in different slots (delay/reverb/phaser/chorus/octave/etc) would be cool if SA did something similar, had different engines, C4, Chorus/Phaser/Flanger, Fuzz/Distortion/Overdrive, Delay/Reverb, and could make different scenes. Kinda if you were to rehouse several pedals in a single enclosure, but have 1 interface/control system. With everything SA has, would be an HX Stomp killer. One can dream!

I think the value, flexibility and sonic quality is unsurpassed by Source Audio.

It doesn't come in one box of Legos, but most players could get an EQ2, Aftershock and Gemini and be completely covered. That doesn't even get into midi or NeuroHub control.

It does get involved getting into Synth, UW and Delay/Reverb as next levet effects. But, the quality is unmatched at the price point and portability level.

Just got my c4 after a little bit of a SA break. Two quick q’s:

plugged in via usb to my desktop and was able to upgrade the firmware to the latest version.

should I be able to connect my phone directly via the usb cable? I have one of those usb camera to lightening adapters. When I go from my phone to usb, I’m not able to make changes via the app. Is that right?

also, if I go lightning to 1/4 adapter to the 2nd i out with a regular patch cable I’m not getting anything. Do I need the special $12 SA cable?

The USB should work with the Camera Kit. First make sure your Lightning Port is free of lint or other stuff that might be preventing full engagement of the cable, make sure the Neuro app is updated to the latest version, and try different USB cables (some send power and not data).

The 1/4” input 2 should work as well using a TRS jack, no need for special cables apart from your Lightning to headphone adaptor. Check that the volume on your phone is up and that no audio filtering is engaged (EQs, etc)- start with volume cranked and see if making changes causes the little light on the top of the pedal to blink, apparently you may need to slightly attenuate volume if it doesn’t work though mine works without issue with the iPhone volume cranked all the way.

It’s weird. The usb cable works with my desktop but I don’t get anything with my phone and the lightning camera adapter. I have had the spectrum so I know how it’s supposed to work, but it’s not. If anyone else has insight. I can make changes via my desktop but I always liked to be able to make them on the fly with my iPhone once I was in my practice space with a real amp.

Did you update the app on the phone and check for obstructions in the Lightning and USB ports involved (plus make sure a case or anything else isn’t obstructing the full insert of the cable)? I have had issues with a tiny amount of pocket lint making spotty connections before in my iPhone.

Make sure your phone headphone volume is up all the way...
