It's amusing to me that the C4 is essentially an IF"+", however...after using a C4 for a while it's clear to me that I'm utilising my pedal with it's synth features, fairly late in my chain. Where I really could also do with a filter / octave earlier in my chain. So I might well get an IF as well. Sure they can both do 90% of the same sounds...except that sometimes I could do with both pedals at either end of my chain concurrently.

Good point! I think I would also use the synth earlier in the chain. That would save you some money...

It is kind of too bad that Spectrum came out so close to the C4. We have made some great BEFs in the past, but Spectrum is light years ahead of anything. It not only nails it's prime function, but it's got all the key tools needed to fatten things up. I know I am biased, but , relative to the competition, this might be the most superior product in our library. It almost has no real competition. It's funny, sales were a bit slow at first, but it's being discovered big time.

I think you're the first person I've ever seen on Talkbass mention worrying about redundancy. ;) An unwritten rule here is that you're not a true Talkbasser unless you have multiple dirt pedals on your board. ha ha. I have four envelope filter options on my board, and that's just at the surface level... I could program endless options between my HXFX and C4. If you've got the real estate on your board, why not keep both?

I'm on the other side of the coin here. I wondered the same after really digging into the C4, but keep my Octabvre on my board because I like having instant octaver access. Sometimes I add octaver on a whim for things like solos, beefing up specific parts of songs, or I'll kick it on with other effects. I also regularly use the dry kill switch on the 3Leaf, so for me it's easier to keep both on my board than having to recall the different patches on the C4 even with MIDI control. First world problems of course. :cool:

The beauty is that there's no right or wrong answer, it's strictly personal preference!

I use a Boss ES-5 which handles my switching / looping and midi. I have several patches dedicated to specific octaver or filter or synth duties. I have several patches where I can switch in additional modulation, reverb, delay or dirt using re-mapped ES-5 patch buttons (mute, bank or re tapping the patch number). It's amazingly flexible if one has the time to get their head around it.
If I want an OC-2 centric patch...then I got and program one and assign it a patch bay. My 2xx patches are Hog 2 dedicated and my 3xx patches are C4 dedicated. My 1xx patches are my general use patches. Such a massively versatile midi pedal like the C4 cries out to have a great midi controller to access the myriad and great sounds available on it.

Totally get it, and I've got all the same automation and control using my HXFX. I've even programmed MIDI commands into ForScore on my iPad... individual charts can call up specific patches and turn stuff on/off for both my HXFX and C4... (even specific effects blocks within patches on the HXFX). Add in a bluetooth page turner, and I don't even have to mess with my iPad.

I just still like having instant, one-press access on a whim to a couple specific things like my octaver, no matter what patch my board is currently on. :cool:

Nice, I think the ES-8 gets a significant upgrade to the ES-5 with the extra volume loop that can be placed anywhere in a chain. For me, the ES-8 is just too big and heavy with too many loops...however, that one feature would be very useful. It would be a great place to put a C4 / IF and have the option of dropping it in at any moment and having the choice of where too.

That Pedal Show!!! Their video got me to the put the Spectrum in my "shopping cart," but I still can't quite convince myself it is the right one for me..... I had option paralysis with their Lunar Phaser & it left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Which makes me think that deep down, I'm better off with analog pedals. Or, maybe the Lunar just wasn't for me - as the MXR is perfect for my ears.

That being said, I own the following filters & I'm still VERY, VERY interested.
- Emma DiscumBOBulator (v1 & v2)
- MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter
- EHX Micro Qtron (nano series)
- EHX Qtron+ (big box)

Thoughts/advice?

3 worst pedals we have done in the last 5 years:
1) Gemini Chorus
2) Mercury Flanger
3) Lunar Phaser

They are not all that bad, but they are not at the level of what we have done more recently.

I think we were trying to figure out how to take advantage of our new housings and the Neuro app. We also were trying to move the effects/architecture from the Orbital modulator to the three new pedals and it was not all that well thought out.

After doing those and the Nemesis/Ventris/Etc. we have become MUCH more thoughtful about how to make the out-of box experience exceptional and awesome.

The MXR sound is preset #4 on the pedal, in case you are curious. It is quite different than the Mutron and Meatball sounds.

I absolutely love the open honesty here.... I need to just buy/try a Spectrum.
