Its so weird to me that the artists that i love and respect all use Ampeg, but i couldn't get a go sound from the one i tried....

Rex Brown = Ampeg
Mike Starr = Ampeg at one point
Mike Inez = Ampeg
The list goes on...

The video 7th posted yesterday sounded really good to me as well, so we'll see what happens.

PS - I got a rough mix of a new track i wanted to post to see what you guys think. This one is gonna end up on my band's second album for sure!!!!! Hope you guys like it! It's called Yippee Skippy :D

I like having both! There are some weeks that we really don't play anything lower than the low E, so it's faster to get around on the fretboard on the 4 string. But then for the weeks we have those in the basement low notes that require the "THUNDER" I have my 5 string to bring it on! :bassist: Well...I don't have it now but come April I will have my new Forte 5. I miss having a 5er so bad I've been wanting to buy a used one...but I'm sold and hooked on these USA SPECTORS!

First band practice with Parallel 45 last night! Everyone was amazed at the tone. Even the lead guitarist! Lol Our new KB reached over and petted Lucy Lui and said, wow that's really awesome looking! Lol "Hands Off"! Lol

So I'm debating getting a lighter more versatile cab than my beastly 1x15, as I find with the Spector I'm wanting more mid bump without treble clang.

I'm looking around for a 2x12, but it needs to handle 400W at 8 and/or 4 ohms if I decide to run both cabs together. Don't want a horn or tweeter, as I generally start to roll off my tone around 1k, and completely roll it off at 2k. It may be ok if it has one, as long as it has the option to turn it OFF.

It may be totally impossible with a cab of this size, but I want to get more of a middy grind like you get on a 4x10 or 8x10 (especially like the ampeg sealed fridge :D), while still being able to get it up and down the stairs from the studio/rehearsal space. Also I don't have a pickup truck or trailer so no fridge for me haha.

I'm not looking for something all that hi-fi sounding, I like pushing my amp and the speakers so I can get some dirt when I really dig in, rather than using pedals.

Also I'm kinda dumb to fancy audio cables, I use 1/4" speaker cables, not speakon or anything like that.

Here's the thing about Ampeg, totally IMO, YMMV, but guys on the amp forum seem to agree.

With the sealed 8x10, your not going to hear this massive bottom end like you want to hear playing solo. The cab rolls off about 50-60hz on the low end and also rolls off about 2k on the high end. All the Spec. babys and guru's will tell you all kinds of things about how this cab goes lower and this one goes higher yada, yada..... The fact is that onstage and elseware (esp mic'd), that sealed cab sits exactly where you want it to in the mix. The good, powerful low end that is "bass" that you want is all there, esp in the 100hz range where it counts. The whole cab actually resonates a little lower but you don't really hear it until you give it some room, put it on a stage and stand 20 feet back from it. Than you go "ohhhh.....". The sealed 810 stays tight and keeps you out of the mudd.

Now, that cool sounding 30 hz tuned ported cab that sounded great in the store falls to it's knees in the mix vs the 810. All the low end that sounded killer solo (which we all love) , turns to mud in the mix and is usually so pronounced that you have to turn things down further to compensate. Believe me , been there done that, learned, and went " why does my bass sound like a beast live with this ampeg 810 cab?"

A little added bonus, the 810 has a nice sweet spot in the 800-1000 hz range, right were.....you guessed it , the Spector growl resides ;). On a plus note.... if your looking at an ampeg head, stay away from the the ultra low and ultra high buttons. They will basically give you a preset EQ curve and render the rest of the EQ on the head practically useless. you'll find yourself cranking things on the graphic to get a little bit of difference. The ampeg eq knobs aren't flat when set to 12:00 either. There's a bit of a hump at 100-120 hz with them set flat. I have the svt2 ( non pro) preamp with a power amp and 810e and love it. I use the vol on the svt 2 as kind of a gain knob, and the vol on the power amp as a master. that combined with the trim pot on the tone pump to vary the output level on the bass (to not drive the input so hard but have all of my bass and treb boost avail) works out great for me. The new svt 7 pro is the most "SVT cl / SVT 2 " sounding head from ampeg. Reguardless of having one 12ax7, most guys agree. I plugged into one and set my eq like I do on my 2, and my tone was there.

My buddy Lenny knows his sh*t...he even described the sound of my new Spector before I could think of how to explain it. He nailed it. :bassist:....by the way guys..I'm off one day and I have 4 pages to read with SOUND clips????...still got a couple of pages to go.

Wait a minute I have 2 Berg's (hs) and love them....Berg nv 6/10 In my opinion matches the Ampeg 8/10. Had to sell it cause I needed the tweeter for popping the "G" string....but its also combinations we are talking about....Ampeg SVT is better with Ampeg 8/10....as the Berg 6/10 is better with the Aguilar DB750....my opinion of course.

I've read lots of good things about the Genz Benz NeoX212. It's light, sits tall, and even with neo drivers has a vintagey warmth. Tweeter can be turned off, too, afaik.

A stack of two Aguilar GS112NT might do the trick as well, no tweets, great sound with lots of low-mids, and modularity for easy load-in/out. They can be found pretty cheap used.

The bass I played the most before my Spector was an Ibanez I took the P-J pickups out of and put in a MM pickup in the middle, fat and growly!

I think I still have a pic of my old MM stingray black with mirror pick guard from TT the bears and Greatest bar shows back in 2006....Nice sounding bass but doesn't fit the body like the Ns bodies...but they are great for slap...:bassist:

I love my NeoX 212T with my Spectors. Plenty of growl, without the string noise and clank that goes along with my more hi-fi LDS 15-6. It's light enough to move easily, and also has wheels if you just feel lazy. I power mine with a ShuttleMax 9.0, and it's a great combination with the Spector growl.

Thanks, I was looking at the Neo2x12 but was concerned it might be voiced a little too 'modern' but I might just have to check it out!

Also liked the Aguilar idea but they are only 300W each and my amp puts out 400W.

@jeff: I know what you mean about the MM bass, they sound killer but ergonomically they are nowhere near that spector comfort, feel and quality!

Very good choice, Jeff. Those interfaces are great inexpensive units. I'm currently using a Steinberg CI1 that I got with a trial version of Cubase, and for under $100 I've been more then pleased. Recording into Garageband will take some time to get used to, but once you know how, you can record yourself practicing, it will really make you a better player.

The cool thing with those M-Audio interfaces is that you can install any version of protools and record with that (great professional grade software. Because I'm not using an M-audio, I'm stuck using other programs or I have to use Protools 9 or Protools 10 as you needed an M-audio interface for the earlier versions. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, I'll do by best to help out :bassist:

Have you considered Avatar cabinets? I know they're not boutique grade, but they really are great cabs. I'm actually taking mine out of the house for the first time for band practice tonight as I don't wanna take the Mesa Ph412 down the stairs. My 8 ohm NEO 212 can sit in a hard rock band mix for days, and sounds great doing it. Very easy to transport as it's only 56 LBS as well. Comes in carpet, tolex, or line X, and I don't find it too hi-fi sounding.

Anyone here replaced the EMG-hz pups with Seymour Duncan's ? I seen some in the classifieds that will drop in my Rex 5 . They are the regular passive ones .

Wondering if they would be a major upgrade in sound and output ???

Or should I just get some EMG s ?

My ns2a with original haz copy and Duncan actives absolutely kills !!! So it's way too much adjusting to swap basses in the same set .

Well I've never used a sealed cabinet, I just remember someone posting a clip with a sealed ampeg cab and it sounded great and punchy, but it might not be a good fit with me being used to a big ported 1x15. So ports are cool with me
