As far as the "budget" thing goes-
Eric from Shinedown uses the Dean Hillsboro basses (easily affordable) and the Hartke Hydrive stuff. When I saw them live (and on their Somewhere in the Stratosphere CD/DVD) he has a terrific sound that totally fits for them.
I'm sure some of his Dean stuff has been modded a tad (since he used to play Sterlings through Boogie gear) but I'd have no complaints rocking that setup if I were into 4's.
