SPECTOR® Club - Part 30

Well I got to play my new to me Euro LX tonight with the band.

This one has the non trim Tone Pump, I was a little worried about that, I noticed playing at home through my PA the output was louder than my CR4FM, which has the trim pot tone pump. i bumped up the CR4FM TP a bit and got them close.

well on to my initial, in band review.

This thing is a different beast. I prefer the Low end growl on this bass over the CR4FM but the mids are not as pronounced. That was easily adjusted, i actually just brought the presence knob up a bit and it really cut nicely in the mix.

The Euro plays a little smoother, it has a thinner neck (front to back) and the oil finish is awesome on the neck.

Its going to be hard to pick which bass to play, I'll probably alternate them on shows... I'm a lucky guy :bassist:

The heritage hunter tour? I gotta give it to ghost, even though I'm not a fan of the music (or the satanist thing, although I'm pretty sure that's just a tongue-in-cheek joke kinda thing), they put on a decent show. If I had one complaint, it's that te sound guys put the kick drum up way too loud during opeth and mastodons sets. Couldn't hear any bass!

Basically, when Pantera came on, everyone rushed to get onto the field who weren't already there and there was nothing security could do.....until the NJ State Troopers all came on with shotguns and started chasing people out :D

That still is one of the craziest memories I have of any show and I don't think it will ever be topped for me. Wow, that was back in 1997 and they were supporting the Great Southern Trendkill.

True!...My weakness(L4 Disk) from an injury years ago doesn't like 50+lb. heads. Thats one reason I got rid of my DB750. But I am pretty happy with my current combination of my Thunderfunk550b and Sansamp pedal..The Thunderfunk gives very punchy detailed notes but "only" lacks grind/dirt...but thats where the Sansamp comes in....not bad for 15.5 lbs. :bassist:

Alternate????...you lucky man!!..I have to bring to 2 basses to every show. Sam's old ns2a is my half-step bass and all my others are 4/40,Drop D....Funny thing the damn singer was talking about other tunings and me and the guitarist are like..."Dude man we have to bring 2 guitars as it is now there is no way we are going to be bringing 3,4 guitars a piece to shows." :bassist:

Now you've got me thinking.... I haven't plugged my REX5 into my Thunderfunk 440/Berg HT322 rig yet and I have a VT pedal I can throw in front of it to get the ampeg growl I normally get with my REX hooked up to my SVT-VR/Berg 610. I've been really pleased with the REX plugged into my small gig GK MB210 combo and my big gig SVT/Berg. Cant wait to get home tonight to try the thunderfunk rig!

Ya I bring them both, but I have yet to need to switch basses mid set. Jeff, my guitarist wanted to do the same thing, different tunings, I told him when we are on tour and can afford guitar techs, then we can bring 7 guitars/basses each. Until then one standard tuning for all of our songs.

But ya they both come with me and are ready to go.

Question for the masses of Spector knowledge:

I traded my Carvin Icon 5 for a Euro 5LX on TB last year. I am SO happy with the trade. The Euro5 has a OBP-1 in it. That thing is HUGE, sound-wise. The only downside to it is that I have trouble dialing back the massive low end, and my low B distorts most amps. My Mesa rig can handle it, but it's still a bit muddy.
For those familiar with the OBP-1, would you recommend switching out preamps to clean up the lowest of lows? If so, which one would do the best job (TonePump, Haz, OBP-3, etc.)?

Nice I had the NV610, awesome cab!!...Now I have the Nv425...3-10's and 1/15...also a awesome cab!!! :bassist:

I would recommend you swap it out with a newer Tonepump that has the trim pot. That is what all of the newer ones come in and it's very convenient to be able to adjust that trim pot since you are getting distortion. It will be the cheapest option too since you can order them for $99 from Spector.

My Euro 5LX has the trim pot Tonepump and I was clipping everything I was plugging the bass into such as my Bass POD XT, sound card for my laptop, and also the trainer I use. I lowered the trim to about 30% so now it has the same output level of my NS-5XL and have not had any issues since then.

That first clip sounds really close to that Rex tone I posted before and the bass being used in this clip is a Geddy Lee Jazz so imagine how a Spector will sound?

I just received on loan for a guitar show on Sunday two very rare Spectors, both from the Kramer era.

One, owned and used by Nikki Sixx in the early days, has an interesting graphic on it.

The other, a one off MTV painted NS-2A that was used by Dweezil Zappa on MTV when he had his show. It was more for show then play, this thing is immaculate.

I'll take some pix later and post 'em here.
