No PA, just my rig. The problem was both FOH and on stage. On stage my tone was SUPER bassy on the E and A string, and the D and G were super thin and very hard to hear. I had a lot of trouble cutting through the mix. In the FOH my tone, apparently, wasn't bassy or full at all. I had to almost dime the bass and mids on my DB750 just to get it to sound decent - something I've never had to do with my P or Ray. With my Ray I just boost my mids and bass the slightest hair and I'm done, and with my P I up the mids to about 2o'clock and call it a day.

It was pretty funny! As soon as I realized I was falling I lifted the bass as high up in the air as I could to protect it from the ground - obviously I have my priorities straight as I did nothing to protect myself from the fall
And in true rocker fashion I continued to play even after I hit the ground lol.

While I love the sound of the TonePump preamp in a solo setting, I've found that it gets lost too easily in a band setting. I'm thinking I need to throw in some sort of preamp that has a mid control/boost that I can use to get the mids in there while also allowing me to crank the bass and treble up high enough to get that snarl that I love. Any suggestions?
And don't worry! I have no plans on jumping ship and selling my Spector. The Euro is still the best playing bass I have ever played. It is going NOWHERE!

I put in active EMGs and a tone pump in my black NS2a. I've been nothing but happy with the tone.
One thing you might run into is the replacement EMGS might be a little larger than the passive spector pickups you are pulling out, especially the "p" pickups. Some here have routed out the cavity a little to make them fit (I would recommend a professional if you don't know how to do it). I actually sanded down my P pickups a little to make them fit.....and it was tight. Enjoy the bass. those are great.

You can try getting a set of P/J EMG HZs - you might be able to find a set on ebay for about $100
You can try getting active EMGs - but not sure about the pots in the preamp.
The preamp is the Korean Haz copy, which is what I had in mine. The wiring always seems to be backwards - P pickup and J pickup pots reversed - this is a first I've heard of the treble pot acting as a volume pot.
It should be V, V, T, B
For all who don't know, I bought this bass from peledog...
I seem to remember the P and J pots felt backwards to me. I swapped some wiring around and made it "right" the first day I got it, although the wiring diagrams I found on the net were opposite.
The white NS-2A I bought from ubnomnar has the same issue with the pickup pots wired in reverse. This seems to be a common thing. lol

Don't know where the problem is but I do know the tonepump is capable of churning out a TON of bottom end. You probably already tried it, but if it was me, and I thought I needed more mids, I would turn down the bass and treble knobs a bit (this is the same as turning up the mids.)
Who knows, some sort of mid control know might be what you need. The EMG with the sweepable mids seems cool.
Thats weird. I have to have my knobs a certain way or I'm a wreck.....OCD maybe?
When I changed to the tone pump, I followed the directions carefully. When I was done, the bass and treble were reversed. It took 30 seconds to swap them but what the hell? It turns out, thats the way they do it. If you look the Euros (which use the tonepump) the bass and treble knobs are reversed from the USA hazlab models. You would think they would want them to be the same.

I'm not the biggest TP fan, but I also haven't played one that had the trim. I suggest any of the Aguilar OBP's! I really like the 2 and the 3!! ...also can't go wrong with a US HAZ!

Yep... it's the one. It is an all around sweet classic white NS-2A. Now it's the perfect match for peledog's white JAR
If he were to buy my white NS-5p he'd have a trio of killer white Spector NS basses.
Dunlop Medium Nickles. Never had much of a problem with them in the past on other basses.
You can use Watco Walnut stain, the stuff looks black to me while in the can, however it is not when applied.
It might get really dark after several coats?
This is a excellent Danish finishing oil now owned by Rust-Oleum.

This is a Fretless Carvin I refinished a few years ago, it is all KOA and I added a little Walnut to the clear Watco oil and it's easy to see it's effect here. (I added just a little). Picture is a little blurry!
