Luscious, for sure. I had an '03 Euro4 for a bit that I sold only so I could move up to a Forte. It was a blueburst just like yours, and was the one that got me hooked on Spector. The new buyer will be getting a hell of a deal on an awful-lot of bass for the money.

Had to. Been wanting a black Spector for a while and that thing is so f'ing metal. Very excited. Perfect timing too - my band is about to do a photo shoot for our upcoming debut release and I need some good shots of me with a Spector to send in to PJ. Very interested to see the difference between this and my Euro 5LX.

I gotta slow down after this one though. This makes 5 Spectors in less than 3 years time. As it stands I will likely be listing an SR5 I just picked up in the Classifieds last week to help offset this one. The sick thing is I'm still tempted by the "white whale", but I think the AW will be plenty for me right now.

The only thing really left on my "must have" list at this point is a true USA NS-2. Tricky part is I am really not an EADG guy and the only four banger I have is that Euro 435 tuned BEAD, but I don't think I'd want to do that with the NS-2. Maybe a DGCF setup with a hipshot for drop C.

I will try to do that as soon as I can. I've been limbo with my home recording setup for a little while but I've settled in to using both a Sansamp RBI and Sansamp RPM so one of those should represent it well.

Hey everyone!

I learned something really valuable during my visit to the NY Workshop... seeing how the necks are shaped and hand shaved... hand sanded... there's a lot of room for variation.

So I've taken my cataloging of neck widths (across the frets) and thickness (front to back) to the next level.

Any of you who wish to participate, simply email me and I'll email you a high-resolution version of the form I created... or if you want to put everything down into a document of some sort, that's cool too.

I'm going to start building a database of neck thicknesses across the model lines. So from older Brooklyn models to the Kramers... to SSD and Woodstock models, I want to be able to pull up the extremes and the averages. To paint a better picture of what the neck profiles for any given set of Spectors might be.

Check out the sheet I completed on The Black Pearl. It'll show you how I plan to eventually develop 3D models of these necks.

Any of you who want to help I'd be really thankful of your efforts and time.

I will try to do that as soon as I can. I've been limbo with my home recording setup for a little while but I've settled in to using both a Sansamp RBI and Sansamp RPM so one of those should represent it well.

Nice! I love my RBI and was driving my family nuts with it last night I was pretty much just using the Ampeg SVT setting in the back of the manual and stuck with that but last night I spent a good hour just playing with knobs and trying different settings out.

Does anyone know a good place to buy that caliper to measure these settings? Would Home Depot sell something like this? Just for my mental note and to also help out with this, I really want to measure the necks on my basses.

I think the AW will be perfect for you. The White Whale is a really sweet bass and has the added piezo bridge but you will not be disappointed with your choice. I installed a BQC and EMG DC's in my blue Euro 5LX and the tone on that bass is just amazing. It's like my ghetto AW bass without the thinner neck profile and finish since I couldn't afford to buy the actual bass itself

Having a bass tuned DGCF is a great idea and the added drop tuner to go to drop C is even better and will cover pretty much all you need. I keep my old Rebop5 tuned to ADGCF and even go another half step down when I need to and it is great to have that. A Spector tuned down like that really sounds amazing.

Yeah, they do apparently, though if you don't need it in a hurry, you may want to check out Amazon. They have a better selection (I'm looking on there now). And just as a point of reference, if you can find one with a case, that's a big plus. A good set of calipers isn't something that you just want to toss into the toolbag naked.

Anyways, my TonePump pre in my Euro 4 is having a hard time sitting in my band's mix, so I think I need to add something with a 3-band EQ. The EMG BQC is my first choice as it's widely available and cheap, but I'm wondering if there is something better out there. Regardless, I really think I need a 3-band pre. Any suggestions? If it matters, I like the snarly-ness of my TonePump, I just don't care for how it sits. If I can find something similar in aggressiveness and tone I'd be happy.

If Alex Webster uses the BQC in a Spector, then it sounds like the way to go. I do like Aguilar OBP3s but some others don't. Ultimately factoring in price, go with the EMG preamp!

I think the BQC would be perfect for you then. The two main 3 band pre's that are discussed on here are the BQC and the OBP-3 but the OBP-3 is a bit clean for my liking. That is personal preference definitely but since you like the snarl of your TonePump, I think the BQC would be the better choice for you. That thing can just sound downright mean when you want it to.

There is a difference between the 2 with the mid sweep functions which I also think gives the BQC a slight advantage. The BQC mid sweep is an actual sweep from 100 Hz to 1 KHz whereas the OBP-3 has a push/pull selector for the mid which you can choose 400 or 800 Hz. You just get a bit more control with the BQC I feel since you can fine tune it a bit.

Edit: I just wanted to also add that I did need to make the holes for the stacked pots wider so that is something to consider. You would have to do it for either pre you add since they both used stacked knobs but I want to make people aware of that since I ran into it when Sam installed my BQC.

BQC is probably your best bet if you want to go the 3 band route. The OBP3 will be cleaner but since you like the snarly-ness of the Tonepump the BQC will keep you close.

Also, a "Trim version" Tonepump will come across completely different in the mix. IMHO

Agreed. I also can reccommend the Glockenklang and the Delano pres, which add the advantage of a passive mode w/ tone control, but again - no sweepable mid. I can tell you the non-drip AW I have that I'm waiting on Jaymi to try on the 25th sounds absolutely killer. The DCs and the BQC are a potent combination. But as I've said before - it feels like EMGs range of gear is the PB to Spector's jelly... or vice versa...

People have been saying that about the Trim model. My problem is that I LOVE very aggressive bass tones, so I tend to crank any pre on a bass (while leaving my amp's controls more or less flat). I think even with the Trim I'd still crank the bass and treble and would have trouble cutting through with that mid scoop.
