" Nah, not yet, keep going" until we got there.:) PJ will probaly have exact information that you can use, but like JPS said, its more about the perceived difference between the hard C shape and more of a D shape. Thanks. That's really good to hear. The Forte 5 I have is definitely on the C side and I prefer the D profile of the Webster. It's so slim the volute is almost nonexistent. I want to get that done, then my goal is to put a Haz in it of some ilk (18 or 9, haven't decided). I know the 18 was specifically designed with the 5 string Spectors in mind and the EMG humbuckers as well which is why it's the pre on the NS-4. So while I love the 9v Haz, the more appropriate match for the Forte 5 is probably the 18v. Which is cool because it'll save me at least $150, and I can either keep a dummy pot on there or have my tech put a kill switch as I've mentioned before. And the more I think about it, the more I lean towards the 18 with kill switch option. That and a Webster profile neck and it'll be the 5 string of my dreams in terms of feel. It's already there in terms of tone.

I'll email or ring Spector and see what they've got to say on it. But I'm glad that it's been done before with no issues. Thanks for letting me know!

I think both you and bclark would love the necks on the USA bolt-ons and Rebops. Granted, both of mine are older but they both seem flatter on the backs of them and a bit thinner from front to back. I am not sure if they changed the neck profiles on the bolt-ons but they definitely have a different feel to the neck-thru's that i have.

Hey everyone!

I learned something really valuable during my visit to the NY Workshop... seeing how the necks are shaped and hand shaved... hand sanded... there's a lot of room for variation.

So I've taken my cataloging of neck widths (across the frets) and thickness (front to back) to the next level.

Any of you who wish to participate, simply email me and I'll email you a high-resolution version of the form I created... or if you want to put everything down into a document of some sort, that's cool too.

I'm going to start building a database of neck thicknesses across the model lines. So from older Brooklyn models to the Kramers... to SSD and Woodstock models, I want to be able to pull up the extremes and the averages. To paint a better picture of what the neck profiles for any given set of Spectors might be.

Check out the sheet I completed on The Black Pearl. It'll show you how I plan to eventually develop 3D models of these necks.

Any of you who want to help I'd be really thankful of your efforts and time.

Absolutely awesome! I think its fantastic how you guys respond to what your consumers talk about and care about. I will measure my two 1st thing in the AM and send you the data. My CRFM is as it came from the Czech factory. My JA-R was shaved. I am curious to know how it compares to some of the models that are known for having the thinner profiles like the Wimbish and Hill.

I agree: Patrick, this is a fantastic idea! And timely for me as I was driving myself nuts for several days going back and forth between the Forte 5 and the AW to try and determine which was thicker and which was thinner and exactly where on the neck each was more comparable than the other. I've decided to keep the Forte for several reasons (mostly because I like the tone better - I think its mostly due to the Pau Ferro in the Fretboard and the thinner finish on the bass compared to the ebony board and thicker high gloss paint on the AW - the Forte is growlier while the AW is clearer and snappier) but neck comfort is a big concern on teh Forte so I'm gonna have it shaved to match the Forte as long as PJ gives it a thumbs-up. But thanks for getting the ball rolling on this. It is a much needed project!

Yeah I know what you mean about friends coming out to listen to you for their first time...that happened to me too when I first started playing. One of my friends that came is a bass player in a regular local band.

Ha! The 810...a guy on CL offered me $500.00 cash. After I quit laughing I told him that won't buy it! Haha! :ninja:

IMO, my Forte 5 neck is really thin already, front to back. If you get it any thinner the neck might be more apt to moving with weather changes. :ninja:

I posted this before reading JPS explaination on page 8, so now I understand JPS. Cool! Yeah that'd really hurt badly to see a showcase bass like your AW deteriorate from not being played and cared for on a regular bases. Also, like you said, when you have a burning for something that's calling out to you, like your first of its kind Arc 6, it becomes your goal. I always thought to mysel that when I see you play bass, it looks and sounds like that you're really playing an electric 6 string. :cool: Even though let me say this...I love love love your bass sound and style! It is BEAUTIFUL!
I can't wait for you to get your new Arc 6! It will be Magnificant! When I bought an Arc 6 a little over a year ago, I had a hard time letting loose of it, but I bought it to flip it to fund another Spector bass. I'm not a guitarist but I could tell that Arc 6 was high quality! I find myself picking up my acoustic 6 string Oscar Schmidt from time to time and picking at it to get a tune out of my head. My wife said to me this week, that it wouldn't take long for me to get really good playing that. Lol I just might give it more attention.

He explains this above. The bass is too good to just get signed and put into a case so it needs to be played. He is also more of a guitar player and has a new Arc6 coming but while that is being built, he wants to buy a used Arc6 to hold him over until it is completed.

A good reason to sell such a cool bass. It deserves to be played. I have a 1991 PRS bolt neck I should sell but I can't bring myself to do it. I commend JPS for wanting to put a magic instrument in someone's hands that will love it and play it. Someone in the club needs to pony up and buy this. I wish I could afford it. It's got historic value too! :-)
