I'm actually kind of kicking myself for walking out of the store without making them an offer. Maybe throw the missing electronics in their face and walk out of there for 300 bucks.
Quick help! I'm at guitar center... they just brought out a Spector 4 someone traded. Can we try and identify this?
Neck through. Control cavity cover is mounted on top of the body (not flush). Tuners say made in germany. No serial number on the headstock....

EMG pickups. They look way too new to be from the 80's... heres a shot.
Well... heres an interesting development....
Someone disconnected one of the pots...
Another reason why this forum is so great.
Helped out a member in a time of possible pulling the trigger on an overpriced bass.
That is for sure a NS-2A, if there was no ser# on the control cavity plate then it was an early one made around 1987.
Someone swapped out the original Spector or EMG selects and put active EMGs with no Preamp.
Looking at the cavity, its wired as Vol-P/Vol-J to one Passive Tone pot. Someone disconnected the 2nd Passive Tone pot.
Usually without a pre someone would wire it with a individual Tone for each Pickup.
If that bass was in 8/9 out of 10 condition its worth no more then $500 out the door.
you should go back tomorrow and shoot them one. worst they'll say is no.

I absolutely love this bass! It's the reason I first looked into a US BO for my fretless AND it is the one that's making me save for my very own NS-5H2MM!!!
...I actually have the pic of your MM 5 and 4 string J sitting next to each other saved to my CPU...I drool over them often!
That's absolutely why I love this place! On my own, maybe I would've talked them down 50 or 100 dollars and felt good about it until I got home and really looked close. I don't think honestly that I would have asked them to take the cavity cover off had it not been for suggestion here. You can bet that I will have any guitar store do that from here on out though!

First thing I did was throw the EMG it came with in the trashcan where they belong!

I'm not the biggest EMG fan either. Would like to change out the ones in my fretless at some point...just trying to find a great sounding passive set that will fit nicely into the current route!

I'm flattered! And here they are again...the JJ now has DiMarzio Area J's. May even have a Bart preamp later tonight actually! I've got an extra one and curiosity is getting the best of me...

Before my Spector's I played a EBMM Stingray 5. So I got used to the tighter spacing. I oughta try the wide spacing a some point to see if I might like it better....

The Bart/OBP3 combo is definitely a winner! Actually the EMG didn't sound THAT bad, but is was utterly useless with pedals.
The EMG's totally choked my JJ though, the Area J's really brought it alive. I'm on the fence about the Tonepump though.
You definitely ended up with a great looking, and I am sure sounding, bass Brad. I have another on order but someday I would like a fretless.
I appreciate the compliment! I really like playing/looking at her! My next project is to reinstall protools and get a few sounds bites recorded for the family!
I'm the opposite! I currently only have the one bass in my stable so I am REALLY wanting a fretted 5 to jam on too!!
It's currently routed for EMG 5string jazz pickups...which I am finding to be a size all their own. I would like to have either a set of Barts or Aggie hum-cancelling p/ups if I could find a set that would fit properly without huge gaps or extra routing.
