SPECTOR® Club - Part 61

So as some of you guys know I have an old Brooklyn that is missing the original US 9V Preamp as well as the original Dimarzio pickups that the bass would have came with.

Right now it has EMGX pickups with VVTT controls, with two original switches that are not hooked up, and it sounds great, however I'd like to get it back to the original setup, or at least get an active preamp in there.

As we all know, the US 9V is hard to come by, as is the MM114 copy preamp. I was listening to limaguy's soundcloud comparison clips and to my surprise, I kind of liked the sound of the Tonepump and Aguilar OBP-2 more than the US 9V in the clips!

Now seeing as though the Tonepump and OBP-2 work with both active and passive pickups, I could install one of those with Dimarzio pickups and utilize the now useless switches that the bass has for their original functions (active/passive and phase).

Unlike a lot of guys, I used to run my old Spectors with the US 9v pretty much flat, with the occasional small boost of the low end. I'm one of the weird ones who aren't going for that growly aggressive Eddie Jackson/Rex Brown tone.

So what do you guys think? Would I be crazy to not go with the US 9V and EMGs? Would it be Blasphemy? Sacrilege?

I replaced the Tone Pump with an OBP-3 in my NS-2J and it is now officially the best sounding bass I have ever played (not to offend the HAZLAB pre in the NS-2's!!). I would definately try the OBP-2.
They are fairly inexpensive so it would be worth trying!

Yeah I really do enjoy the tone of the Forte's I've been hearing, and I like the fact that there are center detents on the OBP-2, however thats with EMG's but i've decided on going with the Dimarzio's. I may just try both the TP AND the OBP-2!

Call me CRAZY! But I'm honestly contemplating putting a new tone pump in my forte till the us 9v come available. :what:

Ok, my information/ announcement. A while ago this club did something I have never seen any other club do. About 60 of us donated money together to buy our member and dear friend, Chris Loe (may he rest in peace), a white Ian Hill Spector euro. Steve Maddern (smadder) orchestrated all this. It was and is a beautiful instrument. When Chris decided on a cool NS2 he had found and had to have, he asked the club if we had any issues with him moving the bass to buy said ns2. at this point Steve bought the bass to enable Chris to get the NS2.

Steve has developed a significant neurological disorder over the past 9 months and it has now left him unable to play. I have kept in contact with him through all his trials in the last year, quite regularly. Without getting into too much more detail (Steve asked that I be brief and not disclose everything he has gone through and how this whole disorder has effected him), Steve asked me to help him move his bass gear. I bought a couple and helped to sell the rest of the bigger items. A little while ago he told me he was giving me a gift out of friendship. He had valued my friendship so much through this time in his life.....he was sending me the above mentioned bass. He had a USA 9 volt installed in it before sending it to me. I now have this lovely bass. It is beautiful and I believe that it has a very special value (emotional) in it. I am honored to own this bass.

No money exchanged hands between Steve and I for this instrument. It is not for sale, nor can or will it ever be sold. If Steve ever gets better (which he says probably wont happen but I keep encouraging him) then I will be shipping this bass back to him. There is a certain level of reverence I hold for this instrument.

I just wanted people to know what had happened to this particular instrument, as it has a special history behind it and I wanted the club to know. This bass was bought out of kindness for a club member and then gifted to another club member....me. I am still in shock and amazement at Steve having chosen me to bestow such an incredible gift on. I consider it an honor. Every time I play this bass from here on out I will do it in remember since of the man we all pulled together to get it for.

I am sharing this info out of respect for our club, Steve, Chris, and all the members of this club that Chris touched.
