Wow Andy...Your man on a mission! :cool: You'll have almost all colors of the rainbow in Spector Basses. :D

As it stands, I supposed I'm nerding out and going for every lightsaber color seen in Star Wars. I have red for Vader, purple for Mace Windu and blue for Obi-Wan, just need my green for Luke's second one. :help:

That's actually the most awesome concept for choosing bass colors I've ever heard of.
 
Traded the OBP-2 from my new Forte 4 to Mr.Bassie for a new trim Tone Pump he had.

Wired it up following the vol/blend configuration on Spector.Com and........nothing. :confused:
No hum, crackle, nothing.

Rewired it 3 times, careful to make sure every connection was solid. Checked, checked and rechecked the schematic. Nothing. :scowl:

Thinking it was a dud, was about to give up and send it back to Mr.Bassie when I decided to look at one of my other Spectors with this configuration (don't remember the schematic I followed for this one as I've installed several of these) and noticed several different connections from the given schematic.

Wired it up one more time, following the changes I saw in my other Spector and YES!!!!! It's working perfectly.

If anyone is doing this. the changes, following the wires from left to right, with wires on the bottom like the pic in the schematic (follow this way as the colors are frequently incorrect). The Tone Pump sticker will probably be upside down this way:

1. And this may not make much difference in the ultimate grounding , but the grounds (braids) from both pups should be grounded to the chassis of the volume put rather than connected separately to the blend pot as shown on the Spector schematic.

2. A wire needs to be run from the grounded (to chassis) right lug of the volume pot to the bottom left lug of the blend pot. This same lug on the blend pot should also receive the black (second from left) wire from the Tone Pump with the white (first) wire going to the bottom right lug of the blend. This is opposite of the Spector schematic, but is the way mine (that works :smug:) is wired.

Note: The wire from the bottom right lug of the blend that grounds to the chassis, shown on the Spector schematic is unneeded. The two white (hot) wires coming from the pickups go to the middle (upper and lower) lugs of the blend as shown on the Spector schematic.

The third through seventh wires (going to the treble and bass pots) on the Spector schematic are correct.
The black wire from the battery clip to the ring (long middle lug on the switchcraft jack) is also correct.

3. A wire from the bottom right lug of the blend should go to the middle lug of the volume. The wire shown to go from the middle volume lug to the jack ground is incorrect as shown on the Spector schematic.

4. The eighth wire (or third from right) goes to the sleeve of the input jack, not the volume pot as shown on the Spector schematic.

5. The ninth wire goes to the (short) ground lug of the input jack, not the left lug of the volume as shown on the Spector schematic. The left lug of the volume is actually not connected to anything.

6. The last (red) wire on the far right is correct as shown on the Spector schematic. Just remember if you are hooking up active EMG's you have to merge the red wires from the pickups to this last connection also.

I think I remembered everything.
It may seem complicated, but this info would have saved me hours of frustration. :spit:
Hopefully JPS will get the appropriate someone on this and fix it before this happens to anyone else.
I'll have to assume the other schematics are (hopefully) correct. :eyebrow:

Whoa, that's a lot of changes. I'm going to be installing a TP into something soon so all of that is very helpful.

I actually just went and looked at the website, it seems when you follow their wiring for V/Bl/B/T the volume control functions after the preamp while when you wire it V/V/B/T the volumes come before the preamp.

That's kind of weird that it differs. I'm going to go off what I want and wire it V/Bl/B/T but do the pickups into the blend knob, then into a volume, which will then go into the preamp.

I'll be sure to post my findings on all that soon.

Or you just get 1 that covers all of your bases (or basses, if you will).... :ninja:

I've actually always wanted to see if I can't find someone to turn an older Euro 4LX into a passive P-bass.

...can't be too hard right? strip everything, fill in the current pickup routes and 2 knob holes, reposition the p pickup route to the optimal position, refinish in a solid color as to not show any mismatched grain, throw in a set of Curtis Novak custom wound p pickups wired V/T and then proceed to rock! :bassist:

Now THAT'S an excellent idea Brad! :D:hyper: I believe we will be seeing a "P" Spector Bass soon though;) :)
 
Wow I never even thought to ask about that. PJ and I talked about Coda builds but then the red one became available and I jumped on it. Hmm, I wonder about a Coda 5XL the black & teal finish, pau ferro fretboard and the split P and J.

Maybe next year.... :hiding:

Well I scratched my head on the low output in the 9v in my refin'd Kramer for a couple days and believe I have solved the issue. I went over the whole pre and tested everything and I had my two Brooklyns on the bench to use for reference when I noticed that the neck pickup was wired backwards. The neck pickup on the other two had the black on the left (inside) turret and this one was reversed. On the HAZ 9v the neck and bridge pickups are wired different. The neck is black on the left(inside) and white on the right (towards the cavity wall), the bridge is wired white on the left and black on the right. I was not able to plug into an amp to A/B (it was baby nap time), but into the interface on the level in the DAW all three basses were putting out right at the same level db and sounded the same in the head phones. The pot noise and boosting off center detent was also gone from the balance pot, and back to stable and smooth blending. So, we will have the final conclusion in the morning when I wake the neighbors.
