The other option is go for a more stock combo similar to the six string US BO in the classifieds which looks looks to be a classy quilted maple over mahogany/matte finish.

I am really torn over this decision because I'm not sure I can justify the upgrade charges since, from my understanding, there won't be much of a tonal difference between the two.

Devil's advocate response:

I say go for a maple body with an opaque matte black finish. Those Buckeye cuts look like Rorshach images.
With OBPs like Spector puts in their basses, I don't put a lot of stock into the tonal qualities of the wood. If it were a semi-hollow or hollow body, that's a different story. The electronics are the horse pulling the cart, IMHO.

I see so many Buckeye Burl Spectors anymore that it's becoming hackneyed. If you can hackney wood, that is. :D
I'm not a "coffee table bass" guy. I appreciate the art of the paint job over the wood grain any day.
Who has two thumbs and has never owned an Alembic? This guy!!!

A couple things...

First, the REDDI is going to be a keeper I think. Just playing through it for 10 minutes with the Webster into my Mackie and headphones - you can hear harmonic content there for sure that you don't get with other stuff. I have to do some serious head to head comparisons between it, the U5 and the RBI and see how they sit in the mix. But I think the REDDI is going to win. Which means the U5 (and possibly the RBI) are going to move. I also have a Sansamp RPM I've been hanging on to which gives a cool vintage type sound. But I might not need it.

Second, speaking of the Webster, now that I have my two new US XL builds (and the Coda I wasn't planning on), I am thinking now is the time for it to move. It's a very tough choice, but outside of the midrange control, I don't think it can offer me anything the 6XL can't. And I like the 18v better than the BQC. The Webster sounds fantastic and I have grown used to it over the last year, but it just doesn't make sense to keep it when I have these new builds sitting here.

Another reason to move it, I might....*might* have a build I want to do this year rather than next. I've been thinking about it for a while. It would basically be close to a US bolt-on version of the Rebop5-MM, so single MM, BEM board, black pearl inlays, and probably transparent black gloss. So yeah, the 5-string bolt-on MM version of the Black Pearl. :) I'm tempted to get a TonePump in it rather than the OBP-3 since I liked how the Rebop version sounds. This would be kind of a Spector replacement for my trusty old black and maple SR5 H. I am a sucker for a black bass.

From what I can tell (Patrick or someone help me out), the bridge pickup on a dual MM NS bolt-on looks to be in about the same position as it would be on some of the single MM's I've seen. So I'm hoping that when I get my bolt-on fretless, I can solo the bridge pickup and get an idea of what it would sound like (minus frets of course :)).

Or maybe I should pay some bills. Nah.... :hiding:

yeah, I've also toyed with the idea of either a forte inspired color or a look similar to PJs flat black Rebop MM prototype (more of a EBMM stealth look)

I was waiting for that. These top end DI/pre's really bring out the harmonics and articulation that others such as the Radial, Avalon don't. The REDDI and Monique both have fast response unlike the RBI, Amembic, and SVP's don't have. The bottom end is so thick and work very well with the HAZ and Spector 18v circuits.

I ordered some black aluminum knobs with black pearliod tops that were made to fit US smooth shafts and wouldn't you know the Chinese still don't know how to make anything in US standard. Good thing they are aluminum they will drill easy.

#1 looks like it has a dragonfly going up the middle and #2 looks like a Lobster, I like #1 best but really I dont think there is a bad decision here.

That is pretty close to the build i am going for except for no inlays at all and just the standard black cherry matte finish.I also was contemplating the tone pump(and i still might) but as of now i am thinking the obp 3 with a three knob configuration
