I hear ya - I will be practicing my mix technique with my solo stuff as well. I'll be interested to hear your results and how you did it.

The bass could have been more present on the DC album, but it's very hard to penetrate a wall of guitars and keys and pounding drums augmented by samples. When compared to other releases in the genre I don't think I did any worse. Bass is just not as audible in these situations as it might be on stuff like Steven Wilson's records.

That said, I have better DI's, better strings and better basses than I had when I did the last record so I expect that to make a difference. I don't see the 5XL with a US 9v going through a B3K and REDDI with nice steel strings getting crowded out too badly.

If I recall I was actually still using Dunlop nickels and my Bass PodXT as a DI to record the album tracks so not a lot of presence there. I know my keyboardist ran the DI tracks through a Sansamp PSA-1 and that helped a lot. But next time, it will sound as good as I can make it sound. :)

Case in point... :D

Here's an "Advanced Mix" of one of the tracks that will be on the album. Keep in mind that the drums are still the Roland kit I played on...I still have to get the studio drum files and drop them in. A buddy of mine mixed this with a good ear for the bass and also the Spector tone. This mix is focused more so on the guitars and bass and overall balance.

True that. But I feel that a lot of albums are mixed with the intention of having the bass in the background, serving "it's purpose" in the back of the mix so to speak.
When you have full control, as a bassist, you obviously want it more present, and if done to taste, it believe it will sound great.
But I think we're all a wee bit jaded here and would want the bass in the front of house! haha!

I couldn't tell the difference of strings in a mix. I think that even your older takes, if you reamp it and remix it you will be able to get close to where you are now.

It's sitting pretty good hear next to the guitars. Maybe just a little more high end bite? The meat of the bass is good I think. O course this is just on my iPod earbuds at the moment.

Great stuff by the way! So is this project largely instrumental with the exception of the dialogue samples? IMO, it's OK for the bass to be a little more out front on stuff like this.

I should have some stuff soon. I still have to refine the drum sounds since I am relying completely on Superior Drummer for my drums. I had been using presets for the EQ'ing (from the Andy Sneap pack), but I think I want to try and EQ each drum mic the way it's usually done direct in the console. Need to practice some with that.

Yea, it's still not 100% there. There is still a load of work to be done and I agree, a bit more high ends. We have less than average speakers at our disposal at the moment and so I'll be getting some half decent ones soon for when everything is ready, meaning, all the real drums and some vocals.

Yes, it's mostly instrumental, voice-overs on the instrumental parts and 4 songs with actual singing. There will be a total of 9 tracks on the album. :bassist:
Man, I can not WAIT until this is finished!!! I want to start the next one already! :D

I've been working on my proverbial "solo" album for years now. My problem is, my influences are broad, so my songwriting is as well. I have some prog metal stuff, some more thrashy stuff, electronic stuff, you name it. But I don't think they would all fit well together on one record.

I almost feel like I could be like Devin Townsend in that regard - didn't he release like 4 records in 2 years not too long ago? :) And they were all different.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Your influences are part of your musicianship so let them shine. I am sure there's a way to tie them all together in one album.

Even though Devin has a lot of "styles" of albums, if you listen closely, they all gel into each other because there is an underline theme that is his "style" you hear it on every album. I've been friends with that dude for 13 years now and got to watch him work in the studio a few times. He's definitely in a different dimension when it comes to music. Personality wise...different story haha!

Oh yeah, you can definitely hear it'd Devin on each of his records. But Ghost was way different than Addicted for example.

I don't think I'd have a hard time mixing the electronic stuff with some of the proggy stuff. It's the heavier stuff I do that I don't think would mesh as well with either of those. So maybe I'm looking at two albums, or perhaps two different "projects".

I've had a name for my solo project for a long time, and I think it would lend itself more to the prog/electronic type stuff, but then I actually have a pretty heavy song that would actually be the "title track" for the project name, so who knows.

Maybe I should finish recording all the songs first and then figure it out. They don't do me any good being in my head only. :)

I remember seeing that pic before. That guy is hilarious.

I was talking to my bandmates on the way down to GA about Devin's stuff, and I brought up the VAI record he did vocals on. I love that record and bought it the day it came out. They had no clue that was him even though they were familiar with the record. It was like seeing a lightbulb light up when they put it together that the voice was familiar. That's what put Devin on my radar, so when SYL came out I was already looking for his work.

Oh man, there are some good stories from the Vai era! haha! To make a long story short, Steve was put to shame quite a few times by this 19 year old kid from Vancouver!

Sounds awesome, I like that you are doing this style with less vocals. It's something that I could come home to, go into the man cave, turn off the lights and unwind to. Being able to connect to music through my own interpitation is very exciting for me.

I am looking forward to hearing Bunk's material also and see where that goes compared to the DC stuff.
