I think you'll be fine. For me, the biggest challenge was (and still is sometimes) that I played guitar before ever playing 6-string bass, so I was use to going from G to B on the guitar, and now I had to go from G to C on the bass. It's been 18 years and there are times I am not 100% sure of the note I'm going to play!

I didn't want to do the guitar tuning on bass for harmonic reasons plus I like the C. I think if you just practice some scale formations by expanding them to the C string that will help a lot. Maybe Christian can chime in on how his transition went.

I'll be tuning F# - G so hopefully I'll be fine, but I think the biggest step for me is to remember that the B is no longer the bottom string. Been playing 5 string exclusively for a loooong time.

I guess that's where learning on bass & not knowing a guitar from a banjo helps me. I instinctively played the C on my BTB like every other string. It was quite easy to adjust.

I tuned my guitar like my bass, so they are identical

That's right - I had a feeling that's what you would do for this one. So yeah, should be pretty easy if you're already used to low F# on the 5-string.

In with an unbelievable Gig Announcement!

This Man's work has been a huge influence on me for 13 Years.

Out of the blue, the event organizers (who are Friends) asked me to pick him up from the Airport, then asked me to perform On Stage with him and some other friends for a Collaborative Set to end the night.

After the show, he'll be an overnight guest at my place, then I'll take him to the rest of his Gigs that weekend: Erie, PA. on Saturday then back to Ohio in Oberlin on Sunday.

He's Richard Pinhas, and he founded the Electronic Prog band Heldon in 1974.

The only thing is, I don't think the Organizers realized that there will be two Bassists up there: Recently, I'm more known for my Avant-Garde Synth work and have been getting similar sounds with my NS2-A and pedals.

I've spoken with the other Bassist - Rick Kodramaz from KMOB Trio - about this and he actually likes the idea.

This is the most important Gig of my Life thus far, and I'm pulling out all the stops & bringing everything. The Spector NS2-A, the Computer Synth rig...EVERYTHING!

Although I'm a half step up at CFBbEb, they really do. The tension and feel is just perfect strung with a set of .115's. If this band one day ceases, I'll convert one over to BEAD w a .125 set in a heartbeat.

Andy, the US18V has made your black one come alive. The bass has a punchier, bassier low end, a little extra up top and just tons of throaty growl. I love my NS4, so I'm not surprised. I was never sure how much of that tone was the pickups or the preamp. You are stuck with only one way the knobs fit and an extra hole putting in a Euro, but I just live the tone. A much bigger change in tone to me than replacing the tonepump with an EMG or Aguilar based on my experience. I think I'll be using this one primarily in the studio this weekend.

That's cool to hear! I always thought the TP was a bit harsh with the P/J setup compared to the US preamps. I love the US18V. I still like the TP with the humbuckers - I'd like to hear it with some DC's someday. I am actually TonePump-less right now, as the Euros I have are either BQC or OBP-2.

That's a great idea! I think I'll do that with my guitar since I play classic style anyways. How does that work out for strumming cords though?

Wow! How cool is that! Congratulations on such an opportunity! I've played with 2 bassist on stage several times...until a newbie that was playing on stage with me was making too many errors... It was cool, I'd play in a different octave than the other bassist plus I'd play runs, where the other was just playing basics, as that's all she could do.

I suspect FoCo is the Fort Collins area. I lived in the mountains above Jamestown (in the Bar-K Ranch area between Jamestown and Ward) and went to high school in Nederland. I still have family in Boulder. Lots of devastation in those areas with all the flooding. Prayers go out to our bass brothers and sisters and all others in the area.

Funny... I go to bump my NS4CR for sale and while I'm there I decide to show some love to all the basses you guys have there. Then I realize I just put all your basses above mine on the first page! I gotta get my act together. LOL

I went from 4 to 5 to 4 to... 6string

might get a bit confusing... so please re-read lol

I didnt really have an issue making the switch.

My situation might be different because my
// 4 strings were tuned A D G C
// 5 string was C F Bb Eb Ab.

so.. my 4 was dropped a whole step from B E A D
and my 5 was dropped two steps from E A D G C

in theory now I have the range I was using before with ONE bass rather than 2.

I never learned scales by "note names" but rather shapes... mainly because for the majority of the time i wasnt in "standard" tuning.

In bands ive been in... we all still call out an open low notes B E A D G C and whatever... but it doesnt mean its actually a B... its just easier to call out stuff.
