I have been in love with the ZOOM B3. Just an unlimited amount of different tones that actually sound great. Not like some of those older digitech units. The Zoom B3 really dials it in perfect and almost identical to what you would expect from the real deal. Since I have a 3 year old and she is a handful all day, the only practice time I get is after she goes to bed. So it's the ZeBop 4, Zoom B3, ITunes and a great set of recording headphones. I have fell in love with this setup. It has a DI output, the other night I took it to youth ministries and plugged into the B3 and straight DI in to the mixer......... It sounded Phenomenal. Little space so for the youth ministries, space is limited to begin with, but the house speakers took it like a champ and the sound is great. Also has a VERY accurate and easy to use built in tuner. If you've got $200 to spare, I would not hesitate to pick one up.

I bought a Cafe Walter headphone amp a couple years ago. It is amazing; the sound is so clear and authentic that what you get is exactly how your bass sounds. There's an input and volume control for both your bass and an iPod. Walter is an electrical engineer that works on tons of sound equipment; he really knows his stuff.
I think he stopped making them last year, but I saw one for sale in the TB classifieds this morning.

I use an EBS MicroBass II.
It is the best headphone amp/recording box/direct box/gig-saving emergency tool that I've ever owned.

TCE RH450

I just seem to keep coming back to it. There's just something I like about it's feature set. I tried it last night at practice for the first time with the NS-5XL and the tone killed.

The presets are an important feature if I'm going to be switching between the NS-5XL and an NS-2 all night. I was using two SansAmp RPMs with the Shuttle and it all just seemed too much, in addition to running a 900 watt amp into a 600 watt cab.

I was using a TCE Blacksmith into an Aggie GS412 and I was really liking the sound but the whole rig was complete overkill. I sold it all and started my quest for something else. All the while I had a RH450 too that I'd been using for my small pickup gigs.

So I'm trying the RH450 in rehearsal and if that works out, then I'll take this money from "cleaning house" and pick up an RH750 for the band and keep the RH450 for the smaller gigs again.

Do you have the foot switch with your RH450? When I bought mine, they threw in one for free which made the deal even better but it really is a great thing to have with it if you don't have one. All of your presets are there as well as a mute switch for when you want to tune or go silent. I love this amp.

Since we were talking about the RH450, it has an iPod input in the back which is a really cool feature and that is how I practice. I actually ran a splitter out of my pc and have one cable going to a set of speakers and the other going into my TC head which works out perfect. I have my whole music library and can play along to it through headphones into the amp. I just turn off the speakers when I want to be silent so nobody even hears the music.

It works great also for when I am using this program on my pc called "amazing slow downer" which I use to figure out bass parts since you can slow them down. It's a cool little program.

Funny thing is that I had one with Blacksmith and the whole time I never used it. I use the presets for different basses so they only get changed when I change basses and I'm at the rig when I do that so I hit the button with my hand. Tuning is just a quick tweak maybe once a night during a set. I never put on new strings just before a gig, and always check the tuning of both basses just before the start of every set.

That said, I thought the pedal was a great idea when I bought it for the Blacksmith and if I had been using the presets for different sounds during a song I would've used it. I have pedals out front for the different sounds.

Ive been plugging my head phones right into the bass. I also Have an IRig if I need to plug into my lap top, or I can plug into my Tascam US1800. Im loving the tone plugged right into the headphones. Wish I could duplicate that live.

Hey johnsonabq - how many Spectors do you have?

In the last two years I've owned four. I have three at the moment but one is shipping out today. I expect a USA NS-2 shortly. When that gets here I'll sell another. That's where I settle down and cruise at two (NS-5XL & NS-2).

There are lots of guys around here that have owned or do own a lot more than me. I've been playing bass since 1971 but I've only been playing Spectors for less than two years.

I swear by the Tascam GB-10. Plugged straight into it is the easy way, but running the GB-10 into my RH450 is the supreme silent way to play along with music.

This all depends of course on whether you can get your Apple tunes into it.

I use the little apogee one and a pair of shure ear buds. I connect the bass with the interface into my iPhone and an app called JamUp. it has amp emulators and works really well. the app allows me to slow songs down and change the key. the shure earbuds block out just about all exterior sound and have great full range response.

I think any decent head with a headphone jack out on the back and some good headphones would be just what the doctor ordered!

I highly recommend having recording capabilities in your practice room, but for those times you are just wanting to wood shed, the headphone jack out of your amp (hopefully it has one) can be your best friend!

Awesome stuff. It has some effects and stuff on board, but it is really so good for practising. It has a built in drum machine with lots of different beats in different styles and also lets you slow down or speed up the tracks you want to play on. It also lets you record over existing tracks, making this a very nice tool for capturing ideas or trying out different grooves for your songs. It is also great fun to record over playalong tracks with different styles or basses, or just to try out how different your bass can sound in "band" context if you solo bridge or neck PU etc etc etc...

Superb really. Some basic PC skills are nice to have to really make use of this. I have all tracks from our band as Drum/Vocal/Guitar versions to practise on my own with this. And as said I can easily experiment of new sounds or grooves within band setting without stressing anyones time. I can just come up like "what do you guys think about this for song XY:" and fire away a well trained bass line and not just some fiddling... i like to know beforehand if it will work or not.

We also use this machine to record our rehearsals.
