SPECTOR® Club - Part 70

Picked this one up recently in conjunction with a 2 for 1 trade.

Based on some recent transaction history, I believe this is what I have here.

An early Euro NSCR with an oil finish. I say early, because the serial number is in the pre-amp cavity and the back of the headstock is nekked. Somewhere along the way, it had the gold hardware swapped for black, which is fine with me. I still have the original gold bridge and tuners, if anyone is interested. This one also has the 1.5" neck, which I was not expecting, but which is an added bonus as far as I am concerned. I don't think this qualifies as an FM, the back is actually prettier than the front, as far as grain goes. I just got it back from my luthier, who gave it a full detail and setup, and put GHS pressure wounds on it. Can't wait to get it home and plug it in. Come on, 5 o clock.

Question for the club, if I want to re-oil the finish, down the road a bit, what oil would you recommend?

I own a couple of badass 5's. A newly aquired Euro5LX and a Valenti J/MM5.
My Sadowsky WL4 and the SSD NS-4 both equipped with the DSL, get 90% of the my playing time.
Even on gigs where I would take a 5, I've been using one of the DSL equipped 4's.

So, while I could forgo owning a 5 with no issues, I still like to have one (or two) around.

But all said, I could dump everything and keep my WL4 with the DSL and be completely happy.

Well grumpy I totally agree. That's why I ordered an NS2. I love the shorter scale, thinner neck, and lighter weight. It's just that in my old age I still need the occasional brown note to loosen things up for me if you catch my meaning.

I can't do without a 5 string. What I generally play involves everything from the Low B all the way up to a high G (sometimes above). Even a BEAD 4 string wouldn't be good enough.

That being said, I keep 4 strings around for drop tunings that are easier to play with open D tuning (as an example)

Same here. I'm mostly a 5er player but like a 4 if I'm doing detuned stuff most of the time. Of course it just depends. My last band was in drop C and D std and I used a 5 100% of the time and it was easy enough. But usually I like a 4 for that sorta deal which is why my next buy will be a 4.

I have been wanting a rebop for a while now and 5er at that

You got an amazing deal man. I have pretty much the exact same bass except the serial number on mine is NB1726 so mine's a bit older. I thought I got a great deal paying $450 for it at GC but you definitely got a much better one

I upgraded the pickups to EMG DC's and added a trim pot Tonepump to it at 18V and that bass just slays. It's tuned down one and a half steps and the tone on the thing is simply amazing. I should have it back this weekend (it needed a really good setup since I am not very good at it especially with the low tuning) and I will try and record some clips of it.

Wish they did these in a 5 string with the P/J configuration. I'd love to have a Rex style bass in White, these really do look great.

here is one for you guys. I got my US 18v today (thanks Ho!!!) and I couldn't wait to try it out. I wired it up with my SSDs in my Legend X... the tone is alot fuller and really killer through my practice rig. I have full band practice tonight, so I'm going to try it out. . I'll let you guys know how it works out. and also I still plan on getting some DCs

You should experment with a P in combonation with the DC. The Spector 18v is a killer circuit.

Chris Bavaria for the win! IMO you made the right choice when you decided to go with the oil finish. Absolute class. I've never seen another one like that. Very unique.

Also as someone who's had and has USA stuff... it really is just the next level when it comes to Spectors. I never believed it either til I got my first USA... which happened to be a Brooklyn NS2!

My Brooklyn's are my favorite and the best sounding HAZ circuit IMO.

Question for the club, if I want to re-oil the finish, down the road a bit, what oil would you recommend?

I use Warwick wax on mine but any wax/mineral oil mix works well. The waxier the better. Any higher end kitchenware store should carry butcher block paste for cutting boards. It's generally just beeswax and mineral oil which is perfect. Don't use any kind of cooking oil as it will go rancid and your bass will stink . Tung, linseed and Danish oils would be ok but will darken the wood. I'd stick to the wax/mineral oil. Gives a nice shiny finish as well.
