well after play the jar live I have made a decision……. double Js with a TP ROCKS!!! The tone is a lot tighter in the low end and the TP makes sure you have plenty to go around… Pics should start to surface but here is one.

A friend asked me to fix his old ReBop 5. I thought he meant set it up, but turns out the strap button has come off on the bottom side of the bass. The screw has sheared off at the head, leaving nothing to grip on to with pliers. I was considering taking my drill to the screw and seeing if I can get enough friction with a bit to unscrew it, but I am 98% sure that is not gonna work. I wanted to use this bass for a gig on saturday, anyone have any advice for how to fix this up?

yes…First secure the bass from moving, use a good center punch, set the center punch on the center of the screw and hit it a good one with a hammer to put a devit in the screw, next use a good sharp metal drill bit and drill a hole into the center of the broken screw atleast 1/4-1/2", next put an easy out into that drilled hole in the center of the screw and once the easy out is sunk into the broken screw, turn it out counter clockwise and the screw should come out easily. If you don't have access to these tools then consider drilling another small hole just a little away from the old hole and install another strap screw. Good luck!

Yikes! The way she sheared I'm afraid the screw looks to be hardened. The hardness of the screw will determine how difficult it is to drill. As already mentioned, try hitting it with a center punch. If you have an automatic center punch, all the better. If it fails to make a dimple in the screw, it is pretty damn hard. If the screw chips, then you have a real hard screw. I seriously doubt you'll get the screw out by any other means, other than a screw extractor. You will need a very thin extractor! Work slowly! Best of luck!

For the short term if you can not remove it, you can add another close to the original location. Stew Mac sells a kit that allows you to dill out broken screws by coring out a small amount of wood around the screw. You then cut a matching wood plug and glue it in place. Once dry, you can re-drill the plug and put the strap lock in the exact same place. I realize that does not help you right now. Sorry!

I just finished having some fun with my basses, last night I set the relief on the Black Cherry NS2 (Scarlet) and now the board is set as flat as the Ultraviolet NS2 (Iris) with both of them at .010".

I got my Feeler Gauge today and sat down and checked my relief and it's about the same. I also read (again) my PDF on [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (by Jerzy Droidz) and it says the relief should be between .3mm and 1mm. My gauges are both metric and american and .010" = .254mm so our relief falls below their minimum.

Of course Carey they say this is an art and not science so if this is working for you don't mess with it. It also says that if you play aggressively more relief may be required and I think that applies to me.

I get my heavy guage DR Low Rider strings today and I'll put a set on. That will surely increase the relief and if I'm lucky, it'll put it where it needs to be for me. I'll check and see, and adjust to taste.

I love the black oxide… it is holding up very well and I don't take care of it that well .

Was it cheaper than buying a new one and where did you have it done ?

Well it is definitely a newer bridge,it has the intonation screws.I am really not to concerned with what it is made of,just as long as it is black.

Well crap. If I'd have known this I might have had you put it on the Bop and kept the black one.
If I do the fretless switch, the bass will have Gold hardware.

I have been playing the basses today and your right about the NS2A, I changed it back to .012" (It was running between .012" and .014") as it cleaned up the fret buzz especially with the action set to the Spector specifications....I'm glad the truss works on this bass as this is the first time I have messed with it because it has always held true.

Yes definitely less expensive. If I recall correctly it was about $50.
The process is used for a lot of different things. Kevin uses it for golf putters. Heck of a nice guy.

I'm super busy working on the live show / Album release party which is coming up this Wednesday. We've only had 2 rehearsals and we have 2 more to go. Things are sounding pretty nice I must say. Derek (guitarist) and Ash (drummer) are fantastic.
I've been working on visuals for the show as well. Something pretty cool for the entire setlist.

If you don't want to drill it out, just move the strap button location either left or right. Personally, I think the Rebop can stand to have it come even a little more to the left (looking from the front), but it all depends on how you like your bass to hang.

I'm about 1.5 hours south of Woodstock, NY but according to PJ, no tours of the factory are possible. I'm 14 miles from NYC where there is a stocking USA dealer. Not that I want to go into mid town Manhattan between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but my GAS may just push me to do so!

By my avatar and my forum name, you all know what basses I favor. I'm told a Spector would be right up my alley and expand my arsenal considerably. I just need to make sure it's right for me but I realize finding something remotely close to what I'm willing to purchase may be a bit of an up hill battle. I need to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges.

As I've talked about in the past, I move the bottom strap peg to dead center on all my Spectors anyway. Been doing this since nearly day one (almost 25 years) since, IMHO, the balance is better this way.

Give it a shot and chock the other up to "mojo".

A ReBop with center balancing will neck dive. There's not enough weight in the body to support a mid-point strap button.

After playing my NS-4 for a year & then purchasing my NS-2, I sold all of my Rics to help fund the Spector purchases, and more importantly, I sold them because I hadn't played them since my 1st USA Spector arrived...

So the transition from Rickenbacker to Spector was easy for you? The only active pup bass I've ever owned was a Modulus Q5. It was nice but it did not know my socks off. Btw, nice assortment of Rickenbackers!
