Since I purchased it over a year ago I've been searching for just the right preamp to replace the nontrim tonepump and hopefully tame the top end on this beast.
Well The other day I plugged into one of my less used rigs and - BAM! I found the perfect amp/cab match for this bass and no longer GAS for a different preamp. Much to my surprise the perfect rig for this bass IMHO is a Musicman HD150 into a Bergantino HT322. That rig/bass combo just kills my normal SVT/Berg610 rig that I use for all my other Spectors. Massive grit and grind, crystal clear chords and ultra punch. I'm in love all over again.

That's one eye popping poplar burl! Don't see many in the club as you used to...:ninja:
When I had a non-trim TP in a ReBop 4DLX I found it to be a great pre with the right pickups (EMG 35P/J) and bass rig. Glad to hear you're enjoying that gorgeous bass! :bassist:

I summarized my first gig in 10 years as an excellent experience, and it truly was. However, I had one minor hiccup during the show; broken E string.
At my request, PJ had Jimmy string my NS-4 with Spector Formula 603s. I don't play nickels, so I would change the strings immediately upon receipt of a new Spector.
I started playing bass in 1988; from the time I bought my first 4-string (BC Rich Warlock), I tried various different strings: Rotosound, GHS Bass Boomers, Dean Markley Blue Steels (I played these for 5+ years). I was always breaking the E string (playing a lot of Metallica - busy on the low E); The Blue Steels lasted a bit longer than the other brands. They always broke at the same place - right on the bridge key. Then, I discovered LaBella Hard Rockin' Steels. From the time I purchased my first set of LaBellas, I never broke another string. That streak ended last Saturday night, after almost 20 years.
Like an Indy pit crew guy, I changed my E string in less than 2 minutes, and we proceeded with the show. However, reliability is as important as feel and sound. I really liked the feel of the 603s, but I have yet to find a steel string that matches up to LaBella in terms of playability, sound, and longevity.
I gotta go with what I know. It's back to LaBella for me!

People keep telling me to give Labella Deep Talkin Flats a try...since I'm a HUGE James Jamerson fan and he has been my main bass influence, I might give Labella Original Fender Flats a try, but man are they COSTLY! :eek: If they last as long as the GHS Precision Flats they'd be worth it.

The whole time I had my poplar burl Euro5 I envied the wood on this one. Beautiful.

Go ahead and put a new tone pump in, or for my Euro I put in an OBP-3. It depends on your taste. Then you can use just about any amp/speaker combo.

The OBP-3 was the pre of choice that I had planned to drop in my Euro since it sounds so good in my Spector NS-2J limited and I might still do it. But for now I'm just in love with the sound I'm getting from the Euro/HD150/HT322 rig.
I will say that even with the Euro treble tone knob turned completely off, the Bergantino tweeter only on 25% and the amp treble half down you still have to play with fretting precision as any minor fret errors just jump out front. But that can be a good thing too since it forces me to improve my sometimes sloppy playing style.

My NS-4 played like a dream on stage. I will continue to use it live; I could never leave it in its case during a live show. It just feels too good!
I have never tried the LaBella Deep Talkin' flats, but their other strings are top-notch. I know a ton of pro musicians use them, and I firmly believe that the reliability/longevity is the main reason for that. (Knocking on wood) I have NEVER broken one, and I have broken at least one of EVERY other brand out there. They sound good for a LONG time; I have to remind myself to change them at least once a year, or I notice fret marks on them when the light hits the strings just right, and I make a note to buy more.
I get the Hard Rockin' Steels for $24 - $30 set, depending if it's 4- or 5-string set. Also, The HRS M70 Rounds are heavier gauge for down-tuning (DGCF or BEAD). I've done it all with LaBella strings, and they haven't let me down.

OK, I think I understand now...looked them up and found the Hard Rockin' Steels are a part of the Labella brand, I listed the tension of the medium set so i can review with the DR Lo-Riders...out of all my tests I like this brand the best for round wound strings.
