Pretty easy to tell.. The Performer has a flat body and the Professional has a curved body like this..

All the Performers hardware is usually all silver/chrome plated also.

This is one of those what word means what things...

Graphite is a form of carbon (the molecule) and somewhere along the line someone decided saying graphite was easier than saying pulltrusion carbon-fiber composite polymer.

Since 1993, all USA Spectors and all Euro Series models (since their beginning) have had two pulltrusion carbon fiber composite polymer rods of which are 1/4th the weight of stainless steel, which has the same strength. The difference is that the carbon-fiber rods are more rigid than steel.

Graphite is another name for Carbon. So this is nothing new. Just being a technical-minded guy with an engineer for a father I like to say "carbon fiber" instead of "graphite".

To me, "GRAPHITE" doesn't really tell you what the neck supports are... because graphite comes in many forms... including the brittle stuff that makes the leads in pencils.

Some facts about CARBON FIBER (as used in the SPECTOR Bass):

"Carbon fiber alternatively graphite fiber, carbon graphite or CF, is a material consisting of extremely thin fibers about 0.005–0.010 mm in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. The carbon atoms are bonded together in microscopic crystals that are more or less aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber. The crystal alignment makes the fiber very strong for its size. Several thousand carbon fibers are twisted together to form a yarn, which may be used by itself or woven into a fabric.

The properties of carbon fibers such as high flexibility, high tensile strength, low weight, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion make them very popular in aerospace, civil engineering, military, and motorsports, along with other competition sports. However, they are relatively expensive when compared to similar fibers for example glass fibers or plastic fibers.

Carbon fibers are usually combined with other materials to form a composite. When combined with a plastic resin and wound or molded it forms carbon fiber reinforced plastic (often referred to also as carbon fiber) which is a very high strength-to-weight, extremely rigid, although somewhat brittle material. However, carbon fibers are also composed with other materials, such as with graphite to form carbon-carbon composites, which have a very high heat tolerance.

PULLTRUSION CARBON FIBER REINFORCED COMPOSITE:

Two bars of this are placed into the neck of every Europe and USA series bass. They have the same strength as stainless steel at 1/4 the weight.
And they are actually more rigid that steel at the same density or thickness.

Pultrusion is a continuous process for manufacture of composite materials with constant cross-section. Reinforced fibers are pulled through a resin, possibly followed by a separate preforming system, and into a heated die, where the resin undergoes polymerization. Many resin types may be used in pultrusion including polyester, polyurethane, vinylester and epoxy.

The technology is not limited to thermosetting polymers. More recently, pultrusion has been successfully used with thermoplastic matrices such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) either by powder impregnation of the glass fiber or by surrounding it with sheet material of the thermoplastic matrix, which is then heated."

I wanted to share some string excitement with the group.:hyper:
So for years I am trying out different strings.
To a point that I could have probably owned a USA Spector if I got back all the money I spent on strings over the past 28 years. :crying:
I learned recently that I have a Nickel Allergy so I only use Stainless Steel strings now.

So I experimented with Lo-Riders, FatBeams and just got Hi Beams today.

And I found the perfect combo for me.
I had the Lo-Riders on my Euro4 LX, I just changed to Hi Beams and WOW. :bassist:
Amazing bright sound but still has a deep punch with the bass boost at about 60%.
I have tone pump at about 50% output. The Hi Beams are more flexible.

I put the Lo-Riders on my NS-2A, which I have tuned down a ½ step.
The bottom end is now even more amazing and the tighter tension makes it feel like it is still tuned to E-A-D-G :D
The Fat Beams are on my Euro4, which gives it a nice clear mid jazzy type sound. :cool:

I have barely used sets of Nickel Spector Strings 45-105, and Hartke Strings 45-105.
I can’t use them, so if anyone wants them let me know. I will send them to the first Spector Club member who PM’s me.
(even though I am still not officially a member. :eek:)

^^^^Yeh but have you tried GHS Precision stainless steel flat-wound? :eyebrow:
I went through the trying all types of strings and kept going back to GHS SS FW. So smooth, deep lows, clear mids with a growl, clear bright highs and smooth as silk to the fingers...GHS are addicting to play! :bassist:

I havent played a flat wound in a while
Oh no...gonna make me spend more $$ now. :help:
I am going to try them next.

+1. I had these on a Euro 4 CRFM a while and that combo remains one of my all time faves. I have loved these strings on many other basses as well. Good call.

Speaking of NS-2. The Infamous Ebay (NS-2A) NS-2 auction as ended and it wasnt bid on. Wonder if? :eyebrow:
  1. He will relist with the same price?
  2. Relist at a higher price?
  3. Increase the shipping charge by 50%?
