How do you know if your pups are too high? Can these EMG pups be too high? On the MM SR5 if my pups where closer than 1/4 inch they started to sound a bit weird. Like the magnets where choking the string vibration or something.

If its too hot lower the pups. If You think the preamp could stand to be turned down then it's too hot.
This is just what I've read here.
I suppose you could just turn the volumes down but that may change the signal characteristics.

My Zebob is a 2007 model, so it doesn't have the trim pot in the tonepump pre.
Thing is, that i find the "overdrive" provided by the high output useful at some point.
When i need a clear tone, i just turn the volume pots a little bit down.

I don't think that it's a bad preamp, especially when you get to know how it works


I love my Zebop in every way, especially with the new DC and TW pickups, the combination with the old tonepump can give me LOTS of growl and versatility.
A BQC system might sound ideal for a preamp for many people, but so far i'm more than happy with the tone I get and it's pure spector growl

Thanks Trace. I don't have a "too hot" pre amp issue. I have the trim pot on my Euro5LX set at about 60 or 70 percent. I was really just wondering if they can be too close like the Musicman pickups and actually have the magnet interfere with the string vibration.

Ah. OK.
then to answer your question ...
YES you can have your pickups close enough to magnetically choke them.
you may even get one to stick to the pup .

Trace, I've been gradually experimenting with the pup height as well. I found that I had to raise the bass side a little more as I felt the E string was not picking up as well as the others. I'll raise them say two steps, then lower one step, etc, etc....I thought by dialing back the pickup volumes some it would tame it a bit more and still have even string volume. Not that it sounds bad at all-it has a nice growl to it. It's just a bit more driven than I'd like.

The show last night went great! Lots of compliments on the Spector's tone and look...I'll hopefully have some pics to post at some point.

Well i got my plum CR4FM in yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry no pics at the moment) I love it! It feels like the neck is a lot thinner than my Euro 4LX. Also the body on this is all maple. It just molds right into my body when i played sitting down last night. I'm going to have to put some DM blue steels on it as well. It has DR black beauties at the moment, but i am not a fan of DR strings. I may end up swapping the pre in it too. It has some EMG pre in it at the moment and it sounds good, but I may try out one of the Hazlab Mighty Mite clones. Either that or i have another Tonepump sitting around that i might use as well.

I didn't really have much time to play it last night as i was daddy duty to my 1 and 3 year old all night
I did get to throw down 2 tracks direct last night really fast over some drums though. They are probably not the best clips, but more like test runs. I'll try to get some pics soon of the bass!

When I got my Rebop I actually expected to replace my Tonepump with a HazLab or EMG preamp, but it's grown on me. I like the vibe.

I really like the sound of it a lot. I was comparing your clips with some of the others you have and there definitely is a difference in sound, but I personally like it. It may come down to personal preference but I have been kicking around the idea of having 2 Spector's, each with the different pre-amp since there are things I like about both.

I see you have a track called "Black Mesa." Is that a reference to Half Life? Sorry, but my geek video gamer sense kicks in when I see things like that.

I wanted to share a sound clip I did with my NS-5H2 (the one with the EMG MM pickup).

Sometimes to break my practice routine, I like to take stuff that has no bass part and add a bass part to it. So, here is my bass part added to Your Touch by The Black Keys. It's quick and dirty, but I just wanted to share it! I know the bass is loud in the mix, but I want to hear it

No detent on mine. The thing is so bright, I almost always run it all the way to the bass end.

I mentioned a couple pages back that I really like the SGD Neo3 I put in mine (post #890). It really opened up the tone.

What genre do you guys with the SpectorCores play? Love to hear some sound clips!

I was referring to a photo angle shot from the bridge end of the body down the neck, showing the curvature of the body. The fav shot angle for me!

Congrats!! Looking fwd to pictures! Don't see the color Plum too often. Nice sound on those tracks! Definitely two different tones between this CR4FM and the Forte4. The both have there purpose and it always comes down to personal preferences. And genre.

Jealous! I was watching that bass! The plum is certainly a great color.

Personally I'm a fan of the TonePump., but I have heard good things about those older EMG preamps.

And if those strings are still young and you want to send them to a good home, I'm always open to such prospects. Haha.

I think that that punch compliments my hard picking style too I use my fingers, but I whack the hell out of the strings
I didn't have an amp for my first few months of playing bass...so I had to hit hard to hear what I was doing
