He's calling it a "Euro LX", but it too has the old style Schallers.

Another solved.
Actually, it's another '99-'01 NS4CRFM.
Note the figured maple back and no serial on headstock as it's stamped inside (2703)...just like the Amber one.

Weird that they both are missing the truss rod covers? Coincidence?

I really like the NS4CRFM's. Mine feels very close to my US NS-2....

Here's my NS-2A board

The wire from the P pickup is connected to the front (F-PU) - shouldn't it be the back/rear (R-PU)?

I understand that the J pickup could also be considered the rear pickup. But then, why would the knobs work in opposite? The volume closest to the bridge should be the J pickup, but it's not. I get the P sound. The volume knob closest to the neck is the P pickup - but I get the J sound...

I seem to remember that at least one of my NS2A's had the volumes operating in reverse.
It's a simple fix to switch the pickup leads on the pre though.

Quoting myself here to add:

I'm also thinking about an Ebony fretboard, purely for the looks. I know of the advantages of Pau Ferro, but I simply love the pure black of Ebony.
Any opinions on ebony fretboards?

Puts on best Gilda Radner voice, "oh, never mind", persistence in searching and reading revealed the location on the Spector Website.

My Ian Hill Euro4LX has developed pickup issues and I can't find a wiring diagram at the Spector Website.

EMG P + J's, Tone Pump preamplifier. Started with a fuzzy distorted sound, like a dying battery, only swapping that out made no difference, switched cables and then the P pickup starts humming when I touch it, and then buzzes even louder when touching the pickup height adjustment screw on the treble sting side.

Tech looked it over, cleaned the wires, re-seated them on the pickup and it sounded fine again. 12 bars into recording this morning it goes intermittent on me.

FWIW department, and a couple of posts above, mine is not wired per the photo for function/location on the Ian Hill model page either. Strangely I find it nicer since the P pickup control is the closest to the neck and the J pickup control is located at the top middle position.

:help: I've been searching the internet for a brass nut for my NS-2A but hadn't found one that fits to size. Without attempting to make one...does anyone know of a supplier? BTW while taking the strings off my newly aquired NS-2A found that my nut was cracked and 1/3 of it fell off. :crying:

You should be able to get one directly from Spector.
I recently had the brass nut on my NS5 filed and widened a tad to accommodate some custom strings and I made SURE and asked PJ ahead of time that I could get another to spec before I did that and he said yes.

I looked on the Spector on-line store and didn't see any nuts.
So you must have to call in for it? If you don't mind telling me how much$$$? Thank you!

Ok Spector fans, as my planned purchase draws nearer, I have some other questions. Thanks in advance!

First, I've settled on the Euro 4-LX model for the P-J pickup setup and the neck-through design.

1. Two of the bands I play with are in Eb with significant use of drop tuning. I'm going to be jamming with a new band that tunes to C-standard. Would getting the 35" scale make sense for this? Instead of using B-E-A-D strings, just use regular E-A-D-G strings of a thicker gauge and tune down? Would the 35" scale, tuned Eb-Ab-Db-Gb work out well?

2. Given that, I'm thinking of the Hipshot d-tuner option. What are your thoughts on this, with either of the scale options?

3. Electronics! I have active EMGs with the BQC preamp in another bass (a cheap Samick I have hot-rodded) and I love it. How does the BQC compare to the stock Tonepump or the Aguilar preamp? I'm looking for a grindy, dirty tone (I play heavy rock and also in an Alice In Chains tribute) in general here.

Nice call!

Ok to answer:

1. You say you tune to Eb w/ "significant use of drop tunings". What other tunings are you using with those two main bands?

In regards to the band in Drop C, I will tell you from personal experience it is tough to use the same bass, same strings, same setup, and it all sound good, going all the way from Eb to drop C. Not impossible, but you may not like the results. The extra scale length won't make much of a difference here simply because that's a full 1.5 steps down from Eb on your E string to get to drop C. In my last cover band we played in 5 diff tunings (Std E and drop D, Std Eb and drop C#, drop C) and I had to use a different bass for drop C as much as I didn't wanna. So you can try it out, but just FYI ahead of time, it might not/probably won't work that well if at all. My NS5 is 34" scale and holds perfect tune at ACGCF. :bassist:

For strings, I don't like "tuning up" with a BEAD set to CGCF. Circle K gets lots of love on TB and for good reason- they rule. Get a set of their Drop Down sets and you'll be good to go.

2. Depends on the answer to the first item- what other tunings are you using in the Eb band? If you just "drop D" to C#, it makes total sense. If not, I personally wouldn't bother.

3. If you're familiar with the EMG pre, no reason you can't get another one. In my previous Euros I only had the EMG and I liked it a lot. My USA NS5 has the custom HAZ Labs so it's been a while, but on a bass like this (from LOTS of custom builds experience) it's best to go with what you like and know. :scowl: ;)

For clarity:

2 bands use standard Eb tuning with about 1/3-1/2 of the time using drop C#

3rd band is in standard C pretty much all the time.

I also have a couple of 5-strings I could work with (Warwick Corvette & hot-rodded Samick) that I could use too, I'm just wondering about switching to the new bass full time.

If you're in Eb and yeah just dropping to C# (technically drop D) then a D-tuner would be /win for sure.

Like I said when you get it in, you can test it out but it may be too much of a stretch to be able to use the same bass for everything you'll just have to see and try for yourself. :) If not Warwicks sound great detuned so if you setup the 'Vette for drop C, that would be good option as well.

+1. Not to commit heresy in the Spector thread, but I played my Warwick Corvette in a band for a couple of years that would routinely go from A-C-G-C-F to standard without issue. Had it set up both ways with no troubles. It can be done, and I'm betting Spectors can do it too :)
