Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

Does having the hum cancelling pick up on the CV 50s change the sound from a regular single coil? I might try shielding first. Bedroom level volumes I can deal with it. In a semi loud band mix I guess it wont be noticeable or I can just use the volume knob. BTW is this a one piece body?

Secondly: you might try simple maintenance, using some lube and adjustment before spending any money on new tuning machines. The internet is full of advice/instructions. I have several Squier basses purchased between '01 - '12 (including a CV60 P) all with stock tuners that work smooth and hold tune as good as the tuners on any other bass I currently own (including MIA P) and better than some big name, much more expensive basses I've owned in the past. I'm sorry about my stupidity. My tuning is normal EADG, so i'm talking about E and A tuners. I'll check the web for maintenance information. I like this bass more and more :)

You didn't mention the age of the strings. New ones can stretch some at first and old worn out ones just won't stay in tune.
I've had band mates and a few other bass players tell me my CV60P is their favorite sounding P bass. Mine is stock except for strap locks and does not require re-tuning during a 4 hr gig, Actually none of my Squier's required re-tuning during normal gig use, even the oldest. I check them at each break but all stay in tune fine (all have stock factory tuners). Hope you get your tuners sorted out soon, IMO the CV60 P is a great bass.

Yes the tone will change. Whether you like it or not is the question.

No it's is not one piece. If it was, it would cup like a trough. Several pieces are glued together with the annular rings set in opposition to the neighboring piece. This creates stability. Oldest trick in the book o woodworking when you need a wide wooden slab.

When I bought my first-ever new bass, a Fender Blacktop Jazz, one of the tuners was a little wonky. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Fender MIM's and Squier CV's use the same tuners?) I took it apart, looked for any obvious defects, found nothing amiss and put it back together. Suddenly, it worked perfectly fine…go fig! :wideyed:

I'm guessing something ended up a little "out of whack" when it was originally put together. That or maybe it took a bit of a jolt somewhere along the line. Either way, the disassembly/reassembly process seemed to get everything working as it should.

Not sure if this counts but I picked up a CV 50's body not too long ago and married it with a modern player tele neck. Added a Duncan SCQP3, high-mass bridge and bone knobs. I absolutely loooooove the way this bass plays and feels. I've tried most of the 50's style from Fender, from the 51 RI to the Cabronita to the Modern Player and couldn't bond with any of them. This one's perfect.

I go back and forth between the white guard and naked. Incidentally if anyone has a black guard they're willing to part with I'll take it. Crappy cell pic below was taken to mock it up with the black guard.

Decide to get a Fender RoadWorn P (3 tsb) , but need wait the stock available at GC around April.

To spend some money for my CV 60P, i looking for SPB-4 and EMG GZR P, but I found a great price of SPB-1 and intalled it few days ago. Wow, SPB-1 totally give me the P vibe i looking for.

I own Fender Ori P pup and Fender Pure Vintage 63 pup. The 63 pup give me a thick and solid P sound, i am happy with it but it still lacking some crispy and woody P vibe.
The Ori P sound harsh and lack bass , and some folk said the SD SPB-1 got similiar character that make me skip a try with it several years ago.

My friend's MIM P (maple fingerboard) come with SPB-1, but it sound NOT as WARM as the SPB-1 in my CV 60P.
But after find an expert at GC , put a Fender Pure Vintage .1uf WAX cap, MIM P sound come close to my CV 60P.
i installed Fender .1uf WAX cap a year ago, i really don't know this wax cap could bring better and warmer tone compare to .047uf poly with tone pot full open!!!!

I am totally satisfied the P vibe produce from the combination of Sadowsky black label 40-100 and Fender .1uf wax cap with SPB-1.

Cancel the Roadworn P order , keep the money, invest for EOS 1DX MK II.:D

In regards to the comments and questions about stock Fender/Squier tuners...

I own several Squier basses and the first thing that gets replaced for me is the tuners. The stock tuners aren't the worst I've ever used, but when there are better alternatives that are reasonably priced, it's a no-brainer. I'm much more satisfied with the aftermarket stuff than the stock tuners. And for those not "in the know" many of the tuners used on non-USA Fenders are the exact same used on Squiers.

This is exactly the question, that wanted to ask in this moment - about SPB-1 in CV 60 :)
After some rehearsals and one gig, I find the bass nice for playing, but E string is a little bit muddy and not enough focused and with new DR Pure blues this is not a normal thing. Have you tried SPB-1 with the stock cap, how is the sound? And can we hear a sample?
The tuning machines are actually not so bad, but not enough stable and I have to look repeatedly at the tuner.

The first day I own CV p, I swap with flat immediately. I only have the experience with ecb81, 760fl, 9050l and current Sadowsky 40-100 flat. And only sadow have focus and solid E string .

I have mention previously, that I swap stock himass bridge with fender vintage threatsaddle bridge because weak E, over loud A and thin G.
Stock pup sound become better balance and more organic .
So, when install SPB1 ,CV p already with vintage bridge.

With SPB1, I have try compare the sound between .047 and .068 uf 225p orange drop vs fender .1uf wax cap.
Both OD cap is less warm and low with some amount of dry tone when tone wide open.
Roll off the tone, both OD still lacking with the fat bottom that .1uf wax cap have.

After the gig last night some people come to me to ask what kind of distortion I'm using, but I never use distortion?! Do you have some kind of experience? I'm using a very old STAR tube head, last night with a 4 x 10 cabinet. We are played with another band and there is no such kind of "distortion" blending in their bass sound. I'm attacking the strings pretty hard, can it be the reason, or the pickup is to high, it's about 3.80 cm?
