After the gig last night some people come to me to ask what kind of distortion I'm using, but I never use distortion?! Do you have some kind of experience? I'm using a very old STAR tube head, last night with a 4 x 10 cabinet. We are played with another band and there is no such kind of "distortion" blending in their bass sound. I'm attacking the strings pretty hard, can it be the reason, or the pickup is to high, it's about 3.80 cm?

While I'm not sure about the pickup being 3.8 cm from the strings, your technique and tube head can generate its own distortions.

That's why I use it!

MM. Millimeters.

Yes that could be too high. Grab a screwdriver and lower them. It isn't a difficult thing. You can even do it between songs while it's hanging on your neck. Try one full rotation on each screw. As more or less as you experiment. Half a turn, quarter turn, eighth.....

That happens to me. The heavy attack and pushing the pre-gain or speakers too far can distort your sound. It happens to me all the time when I'm playing the Single Coil Precision with a pick; most speakers can't handle the spikes.

So I have a question. Earlier I was changing the capacitor of my CV 50s P bass. As I was looking at the wiring it seems that it does not have any wires or ground leading to the bridge. Is this normal with other CV 50s? When the tone pot is turned up I usually get a hum thay vanishes when I touch anything metal.

The bridge should be grounded.
Having said that, those single coil basses hum. I shielded one, it helped some.
I noticed rolling the tone and volume knob of a touch also helps some

Yeah I am familliar with the hum too, I found the no hum zone in my living room for that. I am about 90% this has no bridge ground. I will open it up again tomorrow. All it has different is a lug screwed into the cavity (which connects to the back of the volume pot) which is shielded with paint.

Used Bass Day


Got a great condition used Olympic white CV Jazz ( 2013 factory date ) yesterday.

After install my old 9050L and done setup. I have found:

Good thing ~
It weight same as my CV P , around 8.5lbs. Totally No dent and scratch at all .
Neck is well, fret no buzz, stock pickups full volume each alone just little tiny hum ( CV jazz tone pot wide open, Rumble 200 combo's Bright mode ON and Horn On !!!)
Volume and tone pot work well and smooth without noise.

Bad thing ~
Stock pickups sound honky!! Stock come with .022uf cap, after swap with .047uf , the vibe become better.
Turn down volume pot, Alpha pot decrease volume suddenly.(Just like happen with CV P)

Will change the pickup and pot soon.

Swap with a set of Sadowsky flat, CV jazz sound much nicer !! Highly recommend flat for Cv jazz.

Mine does the same thing. The hum goes away when I touch the strings or the pickup. I just usually roll the tone all the way off to be honest. Because it drives me crazy.

Compare to my CV P ( SD SPB-1 and Fender 63 pup), i found CV Jazz stock pup sound thin. So, Before make decision to swap with other good sounding + expensive pickup, i did some string swap and tone cap test for my used CV jazz.
I prefer do this test with Amp EQ flat (Fender Rumble V3 200/115 combo).

With broke-in Sadowsky 40-100 flat + .047uf cap, the tone sweet spot position around 50%, the Low ,mid low and treble is nice, but lacking some mid and less fat/ warm. With .022uf cap, tone sweet spot position around 30%, the mid and treble is really sweet sounding. Just become lacking some low and low mid.
Tone is clean and clear, less warm and fat sound.

With broke-in Labella 760FL + .047f cap, tone sweet spot position around 70%, overall sound warmer, deeper and Scoop than Sadowsky flat with same capacitor. Change to .022uf cap, tone sweet spot around 50%, overall sound become balance than .047 cap, just the Hi less present. It sound not sweet like Sadowsky + .022cap, but the Low is present and sound thick.
Tone not as focus and clear as Sadowsky, but warmer and fat sounding.

So, i keep play with Stock CV jazz pickup + 760FL + .022uf cap , because i prefer warm tone. Also when both pickup blend, the low and mid-lo wont drop volume as much as Sadowsky.

If i get new pickup, Sadowsky flat must strung in my CV jazz.

In other side, because the broke-in 760FL sound very dark and pillow sound with my CV P (.047uf cap and mostly i play at the position between Neck and Pickup ). Swap with the broke-in Sadowsky flat, it sound become acceptable and better focus. I will put back the Fender 63PUP and a new .033uf cap soon.

JUST my opinion.

My next test is try to fix unbalance volume stock CV jazz pickup, flat pole Jazz style pickup syndrome. Some expert advice me try lower those pickup's E string side more than suggest height. But i prefer 3mm on neck pup and 2.5mm on bridge pup to make this thin sounding stock pup in good output . Some magnet is in ship.

I found place the screw on top of the pole could solve this problem too........

Actually i am planing to swap the stock CV jazz pup to Fender CS60 j , Dimarzio Area J or used Nordy NJ4SV.
But stock pup really nice and sweet sounding that make me hard to make decision.
Do you guy think is it better tone with those CS60, Area J and NJ4SV ?

Really!?!?!!

But ,since the end of 2015, at Squier Asia website, all CV line bass guitar is not in list, but the CV line electric guitar is available.

Maybe cause by the great quality + cheaper-friendly price of CV bass sell much better than Fender MIM standard.So, FMIC wont bringing CV bass for asia market, in order to maintain the sells of Fender MIM Std.

Fender vintage bridge

Overall result is, first, the wax cap sound less harsh while tone full open. I think this is the clear different between poly cap Vs snake oil cap.

After the vintage bridge installed, whole tone become better MID present with thicKer and rounder tone. Some amount of hi/treble is decrease . The tone is less “sparky” than stock himass bridge, but I am not sure is it tone good in mix yet.

There is an apparent dead spot C note on my CV Jazz's G string .

I bought the 2oz Pinecar Tungsten cylinder weight and try modify like what BestBassGear post.

I found those 2oz tungsten solve the dead spot problem when i place it on top of headstock which located between D and G tuning peg.

Unfortunately the thickness of CV jazz's headstock is equal to each 1/2oz tungsten cylinder lenght , so i have no confident to drill the half inch hole.

I order a set of 2oz Pinecar tungsten EZ-cut to try to make the proccess easy for me, meanwhile i bought a set of Wilkinson Vintage Style Bass guitar Tuning mechine from China too, and this stuff arrive earlier than the EZ-cut, so i install the tuning machine first.

Have to mention this tuning machine set (include rings) weight 53grams (56grams=2oz) more than the stock tuning machine too. After install it, the C note dead spot is gone, but the the B note present very tiny dead note (just visible with Neck pup solo while play between neck pup and neck pocket area) which i can totally ignore it.

This wilkinson tuning machine set price just cost equal as a set of Pinecar tungsten cylinder set (price with shipping cost ) and much cheaper than EZ-cut set.

The wilkinson tuning machine not just solve my Cv jazz's dead spot problem , the tuning peg is turn smoother and stable than stock too, plus the weird thing is it push CV jazz tone some low-mid. Really weird but i like it.

Hope this treat could do a help for you Squier guys who meet same dead note problem like me.

I have a luck to borrow home a Fender Roadworn P from my friend.
This baby already have a pro setup , love the stock pup tone with flatwound (9050L), not thick tone like 63 pickup in my CV P, but sound really open.
Roadworn P is lighter than CV P , i dint measure it but i think it just little heavy compare to my Squier Deluxe Strat. It make my neck feel comfortable, and the head stock dint dive at all.

Sound like everything perfect, but , sadly, the fat neck really uncomfortable for my small hand, my thumb is hard to find a right angle to stay although the neck surface is really sliky smooth. Honestly, I have no problem with CV P's neck, and the gloss tint not a problem to me too.

Now, I am really satisfied with my CV P, and i can let my gas gone slowly......

Are the CVs discontinued? I snagged the black 70s P Bass. Expecting it tomorrow. I have an Aguilar pickup laying around and a set of kellingsound controls. What's your experience with this bass?
