Squier Owners Club

I have a Squier VM Precision TB. It is really nice. It is probably the second lightest bass that I own and has a really deep sound. Mine wears Fender brand flats.
If I ever start playing Reggae, it will be my "goto" bass. For now, it is just for fun.
Really well-built and finished IMHO too. Except for the knobs that I changed to screw-type Jazz style and the flats, mine is stock. I do wish it had a thumbrest though.
Did I mention cheap? A great deal.

Mate, you'll love the Bass Buddy, by far one of the best bits of kit I've ever bought. It's small, versatile, very well made and cute too boot! Don't forget that it can actually power a bass cabinet to the tune of 10 watts. It's a very loud 10 watts at that too, and makes a great practice rig.

I just got my first squier (yay)

Anyway, its a California series Jazz. I've never seen one in this colour before. It plays better than my schools Fender. Pickups could use an upgrade though.

Also, Does anyone know what wood its made of? California's are supposed to be made of basswood, but there's no way that grain is basswood.

looks like basswood to me...

it's definitely not alder, agathis or ash...and taint poplar or pine...

is it sorta heavy? good sign that it's basswood
is it relatively he

It doesn't appear to have one :hmm:

On the headstock it just has Squier By Fender, J Bass, then a little California Series logo at the end. Nothing on the neck plate either. Although there's some rectangular gunk on the back of the headstock which makes it look like the previous owner ripped of a sticker there, which probably had it. :spit:

Hi all,

After spending the last 48hrs thinking about the first bass to buy I've decided to go down the Squier route :) so I can learn to play and then upgrade if I want to later.

My favourite tone is the classic James Jamerson/Motown tone, which I understand was from a Precision, but I also want to explore playing dub and 'Joy Division'-esque basslines.

As I cannot actually play the bass to be able to do A/B comparisons in a store, I'd be grateful for some indication on what the main differences are between the 2 models, and which is the best one to be looking at with a £200 budget?

I LOVE the look of the Jazz bass, but from what I can gather it has a slightly weaker tone? And the P bass is more versatile?

Advice much appreciated, and I look forward to joining the club soon!

The J would be more versatile, But the P would do nicely for everything you mentioned.

Unfortunately I can't get to any stores to do a test, but have found a store that has both the Vintage Modified and Classic Vibes series. Which is the best to go for, I can't make out if there is a "better" range from the Squier website.

Looking good for a Jazz at the moment - VM Natural or CV White - damn, they both look hot!

The CV P's get consistently good reviews whereas the J's seem to be more mixed. I've got the CV 50's P and I love it. Haven't played the 60's P but it gets equally good reviews.

I can't comment on the J's as I'm not a J fan and haven't played any of them.

Thanks Zeppelin - just wondered what the difference is - i thought the VM had the 'better' pickups, and build quality?

I'm trying desperately to find a store that has both in stock, looking like having to travel 200 odd miles so all the info I can get in advance is massively helpful!

The only thinkg the vm hass better is an alder body besides that the neck of the cv is faster and better the pickups are passive but really punchy, the bridge is nice, and the finish is great
