Squier "Perfect Fit Replacement Parts" Mega thread

I also have a VM Jazz. I haven't found ANY tuners other than the originals that are "drop-in".

Roger

Someone here knows as he has a blacked out Squier VM, well, except for the control plate. And I keep telling him to finish the job! I am also thinking about blacking out the hardware on my VM, and I believe I read here that the Fender Control Plate will fit. But do not quote me on that!

I wouldn't go cheap on the pickguard , I did that with an ebay one, and it was really good looking, but after investing in the time to sand down the neck pocket and the pickup pocket I found that the bottom curve was cut wrong at the factory and it wouldn't line up with the "flow" of the control plate. Also, with the Squier control plate, you'll never get a perfect match. (you need to match the parts...Squier PG and Squier control plate, or Fender control plate and Fender PG) On the subject of Black tuners , If i can find some with the right shaft/ bushing size , I won't mind if I have to make new mounting screw holes on the back. I'm trying to keep in mind that it is and always will be a Squier, so the mods won't increase the trade in value, but then again , as long as you do a clean job, they shouldn't hurt the trade in value either.

I've seen it, too. But they may not have been "drop-in" (i.e., using the original tuner shaft and screw holes). If one is willing to modify the tuner shaft holes or make new screw holes, an awful lot of tuners will work.

A Fender control plate will only work if you use a Fender or other pickguard with the same mating profile shape. A Fender control plate does NOT mate up with the Squier control plate. Subtly different shape in the profile on that surface. Been there, done that!!!!

I think you're talking about this:
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=400203

I've actually done pretty much these same mods, though I've not bought the HB7 black tuners yet.

Also did a black Gotoh 201 bridge. Probably going to change the saddles to adjustable ones...not a perfect alignment for the E string (with orig or Gotoh bridge)

Okay I have to add this. the Fender neck I recently bought bolted right on, no mods, redrills or fuss...here is a pic -

It took longer to get the strings out of the way than to swap out the necks. I have to slightly tweak the alignment but only a smidge..

Where did you buy that neck and how much did you pay for it, if you can let us know. PM if want to keep info confidential.

Looks great!

Thx!

Nah, no need to keep it secret. The neck was for sale, by fellow TB'er atom1962, in the classifieds for like a month! in fact when I saw it he had relisted the neck as nobody bought it the first time!

I talked myself out of buying it every time I saw it...but one day I had enough and bought it with specific intent to put on this bass.

Here is the deal thread -

post #23 has the selling price...

I figured with it being so hard (nearly impossible) to get a neck from Fender I could not pass it up! These necks feel exactly like the ones on Fenders '75 reissue jazz. The binding is up over the fret ends and the nut. No fret sprout here! Seriously guys, this has to be one of the best feeling Fender necks I have ever had the pleasure to play. My VM Jazz is a very close second.

I usually don't like white binding on the neck but with that white body that looks super classy! Very nice looking bass!

i have a CV60's CV 50's P and now a Vintage Modified p TB. Any drop in pickguard for these? links would be cool.

Also Looking for a vintage-ish 4 barrel black bridge and black tuners that will drop in the VM TB. Anybody know of anything? and lastly... any "perfect fit" black bridge covers for VMTB??
thx!

I found several black tuners on evilBay that are not dropin, but are dirt cheap and black. Wilkinson has "standard" Fender style open frame (as opposed to the MIM/Squier style) with a different 4-screw pattern. Also some Schaller-like with single mounting screw, which is what I went for. Big Al's music, or some such, claimed they were compatible with MIM Fender, which ought to fit the VMJ. If not, I'm only out $30-ish. Just ordered them so don't have them yet.

Considering HB7s are $20-ish per machine, figured this kind of aesthetic upgrade was more in keeping with the value of the bass to begin with, and might actually improve the tuner performance.

YMMV

I searched through the thread and wanted to see if the MIM Standard Jazz 5 pickguards will fit the Squier Affinity Jazz 5.

I'm expecting some dremeling and sanding but wanted to know just how much before I plunk down $50 on a tort guard.

Good post Rob4001va , thanks for the info. I took the stock tuners off and painted them for now, we'll see how they hold up. If they don't then I'll hit up evil bay.

Here's the actual listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370343468992&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Mine are on the way, so can't say for sure how well they'll fit. Also got a black/round string tree from the same shop.

That's what I love about the VMJ...not concerend to mod it out. Not like I'll affect it's resale. Wouldn't dream of that for my Ricks, or do much to my USA P or my Geddy.

So, I actually returned the tuners I got...the keys were too small. Thought they would look odd on a Fender head. Prolly should have checked that dimension on the drawing first. Otherwise, they looked fine, though I never opened the package or fit them up.

Exchanged them for the Wilkinson open frame ones...same evilBay seller, roughly same cost ~$30. They are on the way. They probably require drilling.

Also found a decent price on some Hipshot HB7's. Supposed to be drop in replacement.

Not sure which I'll keep...if I use the Wilkinson's, the Hipshots will go up for sale soon. If I use the Hipshots, the Wilkinson's will get returned.

So nearly complete, just awaiting my extreme neck Dark Star from Fred and I will be complete with my fist full on mod. All these mods combined were roughly another $150. Not bad so far. The Dark Star will bump the costs up once it comes in What a blast! Thanks to DarkHorse for all his inspiration, help and advice!!

I will post again, post Dark Star.

I still am fond of this Fender Mudbucker, not sure of what to do with it once the DS arrives.. suggestions?
