Can anyone here shed some light on the Squier Affinity Chinese vs Indonesian models? I started a thread about it, but haven't gotten any replies yet.

I saw one of the Indonesian variety yesterday and was amazed that the neck looked like a VM neck with plain black writing. It was pretty sweet. I was wondering if they are common or just older.

I'm a relatively new, but very enthusiastic, proponent of the VM series. I've currently got a VM Jazz with some sort of pre-amp installed, a VM jazzmaster guitar, and a VM bass VI. They all play and sound quite impressive for what I paid for them.
Awesome combo! The best of both worlds I say. I also have an early 90's ATK 300 that is my main player. My heavily modded '99 squier P is favored of my newer affinity p/j but my new VM jazz is very close to the P in favoritism. I love all my basses for different reasons. The Squiers are so much fun to play and mod. I can't wait till I have the money to get goin on the VMJ. I plan to try a set of EMG JAX's (I have the PAX's in my P), get a solid high mass bridge (probably a baditz, totally butchered that spelling) and a brass nut. Gonna kill.
I don't think so. At least not a jazz. If the VM fretless jazz (one of my all time favourite basses) came in a five I'd kill for it.
Agreed. Loved every one of these that I've had the opportunity to play, but I need a 5 for the stuff I'm playing.
Web site for Squier only lists 4 string VM Fretless one of these Squier 5's or Invalid Link Removed.
In the late 80's when fretless basses were hard to find and expensive, I had a local luthier take the frets out of a used Peavy Foundation, fill the slots with maple then dress the board. The defretting cost about $60. The finished bass sounded and played very good (eventually I got an offer too good to pass on and sold it, then purchased the VM Fretless Jazz which is better in every way). Today the internet is full of of step by step information about how to DIY the job of converting a fretted bass to a fretless bass. Any Invalid Link Removedwould be a good starting place or find a good used one. Not feeling up to doing the work yourself? Find a qualified local repair person to handle the job (not the yobos at the local big chain store). Even with the cost of a new Squier 5 and the stripping of the frets, it would be a lot less expensive than the legal fees for murder. Or purchase Link Removed. Just saving

But yes, it did cross my mind. At this stage I'm thinking about just getting a luthier to make me a replacement neck for my MIM deluxe V...
Fellow VM Jazz owners...those of you still running the stock DD pups...how close are your pups to your strings?
Press down G last fret, bridge pup is about 2.5 mm below string. Balance volume on the E side. Then balance output on the neck pup to the bridge.
Also, fellow VM owners, I just figured out something about the pots -- they're linear, when they should have been logarithmic. Which might explain in some cases why the tone or volumes sound uneven when one turns the knobs. Or maybe it's a mistake on mine.
How's the output on yours? Mine has always been fairly low out put. I raised the pups a bit but now the neck pup is too close. The strings are hitting it when I play.
With the strings pressed down at the last fret about 1/8 inch away. Maybe a ittle less. Dead stock setting, it came that way, I've never changed it.
