Spend a week to study, learn and tweak the fretless bass setup.
From some old threads, found lot VM J or P fretless owner complaint about raise fret marker cause buzz issue.
Yes, i found mine have similar problem too, but , the fret marker are not raise , they are all sink !!!! While i slide my fingernail on the fingerboard, i can feel a tiny gap on each fret marker. Yes, it is just just just tiny gap.
But, when i press the string with light touch and little off above the fret marker, i get buzz and distort bass tone, especially from fret 5th to 7th . Meanwhile, if i press the string off the finger board area which without fret marker(but out of pitch), the tone sing well and more warm-fuller sound.
Thats thing make me get crazy.
After spend lot of time to inspect, i found the buzz on fret marker are more pronounce (fret 5th to fret 7th)when neck relief close to flat (0.002 at 7th fret) along with 1.9mm on E, 1.5mm on G action ( adjust on 17th fret marker).
Even though i raise the action to 2.4mm on E and 2.0mm on G, nothing improve.
*****Lot TB member here suggest flat neck relief and low action for fretless bass to get Mwah .*****
Finally i get much less fret marker buzz with .010 (at 7th fret) along with 1.9mm on E , 1.6mm on G action ( adjust on 17th fret marker ). The VM P fretless still get Mwah.....
It still can get fret marker buzz if i press the string too light or a bit out from fret marker, but much better than previous setup.
So, i suspect that the flat neck relief cause the fret marker gap larger (especially fret 5th to 7th on finger board area). When the bottom surface of flatwound string meet the wider gap much easy get buzzing . Meanwhile with some amount of neck relief, the fret marker gap get narrow, there are more finger board area meet with the string bottom surface and less/free from buzz.
Maybe my conclusion not make sence , but the setup work for me.
But, i still need get more practice on fretting hand, i believe more precise pressing skill and spot on above the fret marker actually free from buzz and correct note pitch.
Off Topic.
I believe that Factory start make Ebonol finger board first, later cut a fret marker gap and add white plactic filler, so , the fret marker gap or raise fret marker issue are state.
I found the Ebonol surface like a transparent gloss coated. If yes, why not factory make the fret marker first and apply the Gloss coat later ?
