Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

I think you'll be favourably impressed.

I love high-dollar, exquisitely-crafted instruments as much as the next guy, but there's something about having the classic look and feel of a lightweight, good-sounding passive P-bass at this price point, that makes for big fun.

It's one of those instruments that has an easy-going, comfortable feel to it, like a perfectly beat-up pair of sneakers.

I have had my P5 for about a month. I think I have had it long enough to be over the new bass high. My P5 was an adjustment because I do love my treble and bridge pickups. Once I accepted that P-bass sounds best emphasizing mids, not highs, I was able to really get a beautiful tone out of the bass. I think that because of the simple nature of the P5, it is easy to make a good quality import Precision for modest money. I certainly think my Precision performs very close to an American Standard P5 with the most obvious exception being the quality of the Squiers tuners compared to the great ones on the Fender. Tonally, they are quite close with a just a little tweaking.

Anyone put bartolinis in their's? I'm still looking for the modern tone options. I know barts are a personal taste thing. I've never heard them in a p bass of any kind, though. How do they compare to the soapbar models in the mid level Ibanez basses?

I have played an American Standard P5 with a Bart P-pup and two band preamp. It mainly made it louder although the slap tone was slightly more modern.

She weighs in at 9lbs 3oz, the tuners are slightly better than on my VM P4 but still annoyingly dodgy but the sound is spot on P. It is strung with LaBella slappers at the moment and to my novice ears the B sounds well defined and blends in nicely. I'm off to check it out some more...

I bought one did a fret level put a Babicz bridge on and Hipshot tuners and traded straight across for a Lakland He loved my Squier so much.I think I did well in the trade but I post this to tell you that the Squier bass are really fine quality.A little work on them and they are excellent.

It really needed a fret dressing? I'm just trying to find the right strings still and MAYBE switching the pickups but the neck and frets on mine were impeccable. Of course I may just not have a refined taste for that.

Congrats on the trade!

That will vary by instrument for all manufacturers. Some need a significant dress, some a little and others, not at all.

I checked my VMP5 when it got it and no level was needed.

Your mileage may vary.

I will be replacing mine with Reed James Engineering prototypes very soon. Jim has had difficulty with the custom injection molder for the closed covers. Internally they will be blades. He is also mocking up a set with poles also hidden. I will be testing one or the other blindly and reporting which one I like better and giving my input on their response. Stay "tuned"... He will offer these as order able items soon once production is possible.
